Al Lutz says Mission Tortilla closing, to become Ghirardelli!

Al Lutz has a hot little rumor up on Miceage today. Apparently the Mission Tortilla Factory in DCA, the attraction we all love to hate and that was used in nearly every bad DCA joke back in 2001, is closing suddenly and quietly this week. http://miceage.micechat.com/

But, and here's where the story gets really good (pun intended), they will be redoing the building and creating a new Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory tour and soda fountain attraction in its place! :slurp:

The tortilla factory grew on me over the years, I have to admit. But I think this is going to be a big improvement for DCA! Plus, the Pacific Wharf area will make more sense and feel more like the NorCal wharf area it was supposed to be with the Monterrey theme and the Boudin sourdough bread across from the Ghirardelli factory. It will maybe take the sting out for NorCal folks who won't have the Golden Gate Bridge at DCA's entrance any longer.

Here's a few pictures of the Mission Tortilla Factory inside and out, to remember her by. Adios Mission Tortilla Factory!

This was confirmed by several sources over the weekend. As of this evening, the Tortilla Factory has indeed closed its doors forever. Pretty sad day for those who of us who enjoyed strolling by to pick up a free tortilla!

I'm looking forward to what's coming next.

Masecaaa!

^I will most definitely miss Masecaaa!

I'm okay with no more tortillas though seeing as they only served corn every time I've gone the past year or so. Yuck.

YAY chocolate!!! :D :slurp:

My friends and I loved getting free tortillas here. You could receive a whole pack of them on your birthday.
I understand that it wasn't popular, but I will miss this little piece of our DCA history. Maseca!

Gosh, this rumor went very quiet, didn't it? I'd kind of forgotten about it until tonight, when this appeared on the Miceage website from Mr. Lutz...

EDITOR'S NOTE 10/6: Next Wednesday is the first after-hours AP party we'd told you about. Because only a few thousand of the targeted AP's responded to fill the 5,000 spaces available each night, they've now padded the guest list with a few thousand extra AP invitations distributed via Disney's corporate blog. Also on Wednesday an executive group from Ghiradelli arrives to be wined and dined in DCA. If you see their tour in Pacific Wharf that afternoon, feel free to tell them you're looking forward to their upcoming DCA presence. - Al Lutz

Maybe there'll be an announcement about it next week? Or maybe they are here to sign some papers? Or just check out the space one more time before they sign papers?

Or, maybe the Ghirardelli folks are just flying down from San Francisco to see World of Color?

I wish they'd get this started already. If they start soon, the new factory tour could be up and running by next summer for the Cars Land opening.

This seems like a no-brainer move to me. When this rumor appeared, my first thought was why wasn't this done years ago? :) It's the perfect addition to that area of the park and goes hand in hand with Boudin Bakery. Soup in a bread bowl followed up by an ice cream sundae? Sounds like heaven to me!

Now you guys just need an Earl of Sandwich for DTD!

I know I'm not representative of everyone but when thinking about getting a free taste of something chocolate samples will win out for me every single time. :p
