A Non-DCL Trip Report: NCL Breakaway July 1-9, 2016

Cigarette smoke, annoying music, racy shows, glorified drinking, poor service, food selections running out, long lines at restaurants, confusion surrounding the shore excursions, housekeeping issues, and poor signage. In some ways, it appears that NCL is sort of the same as it was in 1997 when my wife and I went. Those little annoyances would really bug me even with the remaining positives elsewhere. Thankfully, debarkation seems to have gotten better. The cigarette smoke and blasting music would really annoy me to the point of concluding that I would never sail NCL again. I imagine, for example, that DCL has strict guidelines about music volume and aromas that would nullify the music problems and spreading cig smoke.

There is one thing that seems missing as well: Magic and Wonder. I don't mean the names of the Disney ships, I mean the little extra sense that this is a "special" family vacation. I've said all along that family vacations, whenever possible, should some day have that sense that something great happened. A truly great vacation should be remembered years later as a golden time for the family, not just a list of the things we did. It's hard to explain, but I hope our family vacations will be described years later with a sense of grand nostalgia about how amazing it all was. The good things on NCL seemed very nice, but I don't get a sense that they were anything close to a grand experience. Not to cut it down at all, (and I also know that you've been on many DCL cruises by comparison), but I don't get the feeling that if someone asked you, "Name 10 vacations you'd love to take?" that you'd ever in your dreams say, "On an NCL ship."

This is, in my opinion, an essentially misleading question. While DCL is generally more expensive than RCCL or NCL, that fact does not mean that it's not a "fair price". And the fact that you pay less for a Carnival cruise does not mean that you're getting a "fair deal".

I will not sail the Breakaway again. It's possible that a different NCL ship might provide a better experience for my family, particularly if we spend the extra money to stay in the Haven. But there were enough small things that I disliked about this cruise that I don't need to try it again.

In my opinion, the extra cost of Disney above the Breakaway is worth it just for the service level alone. If there were no characters, if there were no shows, I would still pay the extra for the rotational dining and keeping my serving staff and that level of service for the week. Adding in all the other stuff, to me, it's definitely worth it.

I may in the next couple of years, try to sail on the NCL Gem in the Haven. The Haven has quieter pool areas, a private restaurant, supposedly better service. But for the extra cost of the Haven, I think I might as well just stick with DCL and enjoy the shows that I know I'll love, as well.
The steel drum band, ropes course, and waterslides could potentially make me overlook a service level that wasn't outstanding...as long as it wasn't "bad".

One of the cost-cutting measures on DCL that makes me saddest is the loss of the steel drum band on Deck 9.

In all fairness, we've been on DCL sailings where we felt that the volume level for music in a show or in Parrot Cay was excessive (in the case of one show -- "When Mickey Dreams" -- on our '07 Med cruise, painfully so). And there is, of course, a smoking area on the pool deck, which can at times waft to the Quiet Cove pool. But there's not the issue of casino smoke filtering through the interior of the ship.

Well said, whether you're talking about a cruise or resort or tour or whatever.

Loud music in shows wouldn't bother me too much because that's what you're there for and it will soon end. You can also get up and leave. When you're constantly surrounded by loud incidental music in the public areas and when you're trying get back onboard, it's headache-inducing.

I decided on the Pearl for Alaska, regular balcony not the mini suite (can't justify the price difference). It will be exactly 6 months and 1 week after we do the DCL Fantasy. Hoping my kid likes the ship.. I think the rock climbing wall will help!! I'm also hoping that we have a steel drum band on our cruise!

NCL has a "pick 2" right now. Drink package, $50 excursion credit per stateroom per port, dining package, or wifi. I don't care about the wifi, but am torn between the drink or dining. Do you think the Ultimate Beverage Package ($125 gratuity charge) is worth it for me if I have 1 drink per day? Maybe 2 a few days if I have a spiked coffee or mimosa.

I have a client boarding the Pearl today! I'll try to remember to let you know how he liked the ship.

If you're only drinking one glass of wine or "drink of the day" per day, then you're only spending $100 or so for a 7-night cruise. So I would probably not recommend the beverage package. However, if you like a glass of wine with dinner, and a drink up on deck by the pool during the day, and then a cocktail in a lounge in the evening, then you're looking at around $25/day, so it's probably worth it to get the UBP. It's totally dependent on your drinking preferences. I will say that on our Breakaway cruise, we got the UBP for my wife and mother-in-law, and even though they don't drink as much as most people on our cruise, they really enjoyed getting a drink whenever they wanted without worrying about how much money they were charging to their accounts.

(One other minor fact about the UBP that I'll mention. If you get a drink while the ship is in port, you have to pay for the sales tax on the drink. It's only a dollar or so, but it's no longer completely "free" while the ship is docked. Just so you're aware.)

Thank you for the info. I think I'll go with the drink and excursion package. I think we will only be eating at 2 of the non included restaurants. A Hibachi and Churrascaria. The $50 off of the helicopter/glacier/dog sled excursions will make me feel a little better about the insane cost of it.

I would get the drink package not only for alcohol but for any other drink like soda, lattes and bottled water. Remember, they do not have free soda and coffee on deck like Disney does. So any time you are your child wants a drink you have to pay out of pocket. I know they sell just soda packages that are cheaper. But I think the drink package is a decent deal especially if you get a morning latte and then a couple of cocktails in the evening.

Sadly the beverage package does not include bottled water, milk, or coffee (unless an alcoholic drink). If it did then I wouldn't have hesitated in the slightest bit!

My kid isn't really a soda drinker, but I think I'm going to go with it anyway. I do know that I'll be drinking a lot of specialty coffees, so am a little scared of my final bill.

I wouldn't do/couldn't justify this itinerary on DCL though, especially with the excursions I'll be choosing.. so it's a great opportunity... Even with the stupid room service charges, ridiculous administration fee, and drink prices.lol
