I was looking through The Making of Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park and on page 17 the have a shorty story called The Grand Master Plan it talks about camp minnie-mickey and the unbuilt fantasy land and on page 173 it shows a picture of the fantasy land. Anyway I was reading the story on page 17 and they talk about camp minnie-mickey was originally planed to seperate Africa from a fantasy land. If you read Jim Hill Media's story on what happened to Beastly KIngdom it fits in to the story in the book. Well I think a fantasy land/Beastly Kindom will be built in 2008 for AK's thenth B-Day

In this picture there is some cleared land next to Camp Minnie-Mickey.

Well, one of the areas of cleared land is up by Lion King (upper left hand corner) which is just a field and not enough room for an entire land unless it were small. The other area of cleared land (right hand side) is the area where Chester and Hester's now sits. This photo is about three years old.

I just wanted to clarify (no offense, I hope): The large cleared land on the right hand side is actually behind Asia and is in fact a huge chunk of land. Chester's and Hesters actually sits where there is a white tent-like structure in the bottom left hand corner. (EDIT: In the left hand corner their is a beige-colored tent: this is where Tarzan Rocks is. To the left of that is a rectangular shaped tent...this is where C&H is now. To the left of that is the white rooftop of Dinosaur)

I've read that book too (I've read parts several times in fact  )
That land by Camp MM is where the book says Beastly Kingdom would go. CampMM was planned (during the building of the park) to be a "bridge" to BK (a land you would go through to get to BK). So I think that cleared land may be where BK was planning to be built. However, I would have to agree that the land that is cleared is a little small for an entire land (when compared to the size of Dinoland)

Thanks for the clarification. I don't get to that side of the park much!

There really isn't anywhere they could put access for BK to be in that area (if it were large enough) unless they took down Pocahontas (which is possible) or Lion King (which is not happening anytime soon).

i still enjoy the idea of moving the lion king show to africa, and just starting at square 1 to redo camp mm. (imo the only thing currently worth saving from camp mm is the LK show.)

i cant help but feel Camp MM was only ever meant to be a temprorary thing

it is the only land in WDW where there is not a ride of some sort.

It has the two shows - The Pocahontaus one am sure would not really be missed if it were to suddenly vanish and the lion king one would be bettter placed else where as some said above

but other than that its basicaly a land to meet chracters.

Was it part of the plans for AK since day 1 or was it something they added casue they needed something at that park of the park???

Well, they won't be moving FoLK anytime soon. They just announced that they are enclosing the theater. The show will be going down from Aug. 24 - Sep. 19 in order for the construction to take place.

It was not in the grand master plan for AK originally. During the construction of AK, the imagineers knew they needed to have somewhere that the famous Disney characters could be found. They knew it wouldn't be right to have them in Africa or Asia or even Dinoland (although with the recent explosion of characters at all parks, Goofy and some other characters can be found in Dinoland and others around Discovery Island), thus they designed Camp Minnie-Mickey.

They actually went back to the master plan they developed that was meant to be a guide to the development of a finished park in 20+ years. That is how they decided upon Camp MM's location. Next in line was deciding on a theme for it. They went with an Adirondack-themed area since they felt it would help to "harmonize" the neighboring lands of Discovery Island and the future animal fantasy area (BK). The camp as it sits now is actually just north of where BK was planning to be built. Thus that cleared area is in fact where BK should go. Obviously, some changes might be needed to Camp MM for traffic reasons.

Thus, the land that was conceived during the building of AK was actually planned to be a permanent home of Disney Characters to serve as a transition between Discovery Island and the world of fantasy animals. Better yet, you can almost think of Camp MM as part of the animal fantasy area that is already done. Kind of like a land within a land. IMAGINE DinoRama! was built first and then the rest of Dinoland was built around it at a later date. Take that comparison and shift it to Camp MM. Camp MM is already built and the rest of the animal fantasy area is just waiting to be built around it :) (Disney characters are, after all, fantasy animals :) )

Then again, I don't think Everest is anywhere in that master plan. So things can change.

If you have the Making of Disney's AK book on page 17 they show a picture of the master plan with a mountain in asia.

I know it is an old thread, but I thought I would add a piece of information to this.

At one point, the idea of bringing back the Beastly Kingdom idea was really going forward. And the plan was to put it behind FoLK/Rainforest Cafe. The preperations for Camp Minnie/Mickey was going to be done in 3 phases.

Phase 1: A redesign of the central Camp area. Removal of the planters to put in a semi-circle planter and seats for a stage like area. This also included shortening the lines to the character queue lines. Plus, the multi level area had stairs put in across from the Lion King exit. This was the only phase to be completed.

Phase 2: Phase two was going to be a removal of area behind the Ice Cream shack. This area would then be part of a covered bridge that was going to go over the creek in front of Pocahontas. This would become the main entrance to Camp M/M.

Phase 3: Closing Poca, possibly moving it to a new location. Poca would be removed, and Beastly Kingdom would be built with the old Poca area being the entrance. Beastly Kingdom was to be a smaller area, built mainly around one main central ride.

We used to get constat updates on the plans to the camp when Phase 1 was getting started. Unfortunally, the plans stopped after Phase 1, and all intreast then shifted to the 100 Years of Magic.

Most likely, the plans will never be brought back again as new upper management have expressed disintreast in the idea of Beastly Kingdom. And I think the plans for Everest confirm this.

I think the cleared area may be for the rumored flick's fun fair copied from DCA. The rumor said it was to be located near camp MM.

Between Asia and Dinoland.

If you stand on the Asia bridge, you can see where all the construction is being done.

For the time being, the area behind Festival isn't going to be for anything new because we are currently using that area for the construction crews putting in the AC and walls on Festival :sohappy:
