Mission:Space Inappropriate Now?

The shuttle explosion was a real tragedy. And America now is in state of mourning, as appropriate.

You know, I wonder if this now makes it inappropriate to open Mission:Space for a while. It could come off as crass, although I know that ultimately it celebrates the mission of that astronauts.

I suspect Disney and HP will hold off for a long while, especially since a big ad campaign should accompany it.

This is similar to the time that a tornado hit Florida just as Universal was supposed to open their "Twister" ride. They put it off for many months, to respect the people for whom it would be too close to home....

If anything, i think this ride can be a tribute to what astronauts do and a symbol of the risks they knowingly undergo for mankind. It may inspire more astronauts and I think gives a greater repsect for the space exploration industry.

Honestly I think that opening the attraction on time would be a fitting tribute to the astronauts, as it would send a clear message that we are ready to move on to the future.

Unfortunately, I can't think of many people that feel like myself, and I can already see the media spinning the opening into whatever bull story that would sale newspapers.

Fortunately, Mission Space is already 5 to 7 months (at the least) away from opening anyway, so hopefully the media will have already moved on to the next revenue generating scandal by then.

I totally agree wth what you said, especially the 'spinning' portion. You remind me of Bill o' Reilly on Fox News.

If disney planned to open Mission: SPACE tomorrow... I could understand a delay. But as of now, an August opening is expected so I HIGHLY doubt they would delay it past that date. 6 months is plenty of time for people to get over it. It is also stupid that people would be offended by the opening of a space ride at Disney World. People really DO look for things to be offended by. :hammer:

I think that a picture of the astronauts that were lost should be placed somwhere in the attraction. Like a small portrait in a frame on a desk or something, get what Im saying......just a small little tribute.

I think that if they have a post show or something like that, they should have a message at the end saying like "In memory of the 7 astronauts that died on Febuary 1 2003, spaceship columbia" something like this would be real nice.

Hey people, The men and women who lost there lives today is an awful thing. Just lets rmember if we put their names somewhere in or around MISSION SPACE lets not forget the other 24 men and women who gave their lives also to the frontier of space. Apollo 1 Jan 27 1967, STS 51L shuttle Challenger Jan 28 1986.

God bless and

You have a lot of growing up to do. We are offended and very careful about offending others because we care about others and not just ourselves.

Get over yourself.

I would understand why Disney would delay the ride.. Only in respect to the HUGE loss.... The reaction to the ride and affect of it will vary from person to person. I for one am affected greatly by the tragedy but I dont belive the ride should be delayed other then emotional popularity at stake.

The important thing to keep in mind is the basis for space exploration. We are seeking out the unknown, taking risks for the greater good of all people. The danger is inherent and the knowledge and benefits astonishing. Each success is celebrated triumphantly while each failure is greatly mourned.

The Flight Crew of Columbia was a group of people far more brave than most of us and deserve our thoughts, prayers and thanks for a job well done. They deserve our respect and gratitude for doing a job many of us could never do. They are the modern day versions of Columbus, Ponce DeLeon, Lewis & Clark and many others who dared to do what others could not or would not.

Every member of this crew lived through the Challenger accident of 1986, yet did not give up on their dreams because of that fateful January morning. As the stories of their lives spread through the news over the next several days, we will see a picture painted of very brave and determined people. The kind of bravery and determination we all wish for in our own lives.

As we go forward from this date, we should remember the spirit of each of the seven crew members and how it shaped both their lives and the lives of those around them. Just as they did not back down from the challenges that stood between them and space, we should not back down from the difficulties in realizing our own dreams.

To not open Mission:Space on time, would be a great indicator that we never truly understood the motivation and steadfastness of the crew of STS-107 aboard the Columbia.

Very well said.

What happened this morning was horrific - as were the tragedies that took the lives of other astronauts on other terrible days.

There should be a tribute to them all.

Utter Stupidity

How come when something bad happens, people automatically assume that all topics even remotely related must become taboo? Sounds like a little media initiated paranoia and cowardice to me.

Just because you fell while learning to ride a bike didn't mean your parents forced you to walk. No, they encouraged you to try again, and again. And no, they did not cancel the Tour De France just because you got a little scraped up.

Besides, Mission: Space is about edutainment for everyone.

Real exploration always has bumps and the line is never straight. But these setbacks, although horrific, lay the groundwork for safer future progress. Progress means we must learn from our mistakes, continue trying, and keep our hearts and minds on the goal.

It is the American way!

P.S. Would the astronauts who died want exploration and education to stop because of their death?

Wow, I couldn't have put it better myself. The same thing happened after the 9/11 attacks, every movie that contained an airplane, a tower, a terrorist, was delayed for 6 months yet it was perfectly fine for the media to show REAL footage of people jumping out of the building and of the buildings falling down over and over and over again?? I don't know about you guys but I find it more disturbing to see footage of real people dieing than a film that contains an airplane. :veryconfu

I agree with you on this one. As I said in another thread, I don´t see a delay in Mission:Space openning due to the tragedy today, because the openning date is still too far. As someone else said in another thread I think, Epcot is about Discovery and the world didn´t stop moving when tragedies like this have happened in the past.

Also, as I already said in another thread, if there were to be a plaque for this crew, I would also like to see one for all the astronauts in different crews that have succeeded or not in their missions.

:)

True, simply putting the names of the seven would not be appropriate. Dedicating it to all those who lost their lives in space would be much more fitting.

Mission:Space will be a tribute to all those who helped advance the human dream of space exploration. We've sent many heroes into space and honoring a specific few would be a dishonor to countless others.

Today I have read opinions on the WDWMagic forums which that I consider to be lacking in respect to the events surrounding the Shuttle which considering why we are here in these forums I find a little strange.

Regarding Mission:Space, Disney will do the right thing, what ever that may be, but Mission Space will open, as will future shuttle launches resume in time. I would expect that Disney would have already considered some kind of tribute to those who have lost their lives during space exploration, even before the loss of Columbia as it is an inherent part of manned space flight.

Disney may not be perfect, but the ideals that they try to encourage should be supported, This is part of the reason why I enjoy visiting DisneyWorld so much. As an example of this consider the titles from Disney's Millenium Celebration music at Epcot -

Reflections on Earth - 'Space', 'Life', 'Adventure', 'Celebration', 'Meaning'

We Go On

Tapestry of Nations - 'Reach for the Stars', 'The Human Spirit'
