Disney files patent application for true "flight simulator" vehicle

Arguably a theme park will need a lot of available land, or an expansion of sorts, to implement the type of attraction demonstrated in the recently published patent application titled ‘Amusement Park Ride with Cable-Suspended Vehicles’ (patent application US 20110300957).

As demonstrated here by what appears to be some sort of cable-car themed vehicle cruising through the streets of a metropolis, the vehicle, as invented by David W. Crawford and Edward A. Nemeth, uses multiple cables to control various aspects and positions of the vehicle itself.

Specifically, the vehicle is intended to fully simulate flight while moving in a physical space. In addition to the ability of the attraction being able to physically control the pitch, roll and yaw of the vehicle, it also allows for the guest to control certain elements such as altitude.

The patent application even goes further in its exploration of what it considers the next generation of motion simulators. For example, multiple physical flightpaths could be possible while guests aboard the vehicle may have such control that they could alter the path/storyline and ‘thrill level.’

With the Avatar area slated to open at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World, it’s quite possible that this type of vehicle could be used in an attraction featuring mountain banshees. An excellent implementation of this may be a very plussed version of ‘Pteranodon Flyer’ found in the Jurassic Park section of Universal Studio Orlando’s Islands of Adventure where guests could tour the Avatar landscape above it all. Camouflaging the cables may require another patent altogether however.

Interesting, if, um, inelegant. So, essentially it's a giant version of the cable system used to move TV Cameras over a football game, is what it looks like to me.

Well, let's just assume that smart people are going to spend a lot more time thinking about how to implement this than us fans on the internetztubez.

We shall see . . . .

Thanks for the find!

I could see this being used to implement the long rumored Monsters Inc. coaster. The skyscrapers being used to just illustrate the concept so they don’t give away how they plan to use the technology in the parks.

Yes, this would be perfect for MI. But it has endless possibilities. I keep thinking how this tech would work if applied to existing rides. Apply it in your imagination to Pirates or HM or even 20K and it becomes clear how this technology could be used to create immersive experiences.

I am not suggesting this would happen, just a way of conceptualizing the possibilities.

It's a bit like the Indiana Jones/Dinosaur ride vehicle, only suspended from the top, instead of on actuators. If the "puppet rig" went along a track, it could swing a vehicle around, tilt it, go up and down and such.

This may be a way to get around their inability to use the "Kuka arm on a track" system that Universal has exclusive rights to. It seems this system would do almost everything that the Kuka arm would do although with more complex mechanics.

Skyway 2.0?

Edit; Think about it. Could the cart actually be fitted to look like the Scorpion helicopters they use in the movie(s)? It would make perfect sense.

Looks like it would be a maintenance nightmare though.

Think about it, all those cables being stressed a great deal each day in all sorts of directions.

We need time for things to happen.
Very interesting...Looks cool and could be applied to MI coaster for sure.... or something in Avatarland...Ugh..I liked the movie a lot
but God I can't get over what an awful idea that is...

Avatar ride - yes
Avatar land...eh...nah. Not a proven commodity...Why not Star Wars land!!!??? Oh my goodness..alright...alright...

Oops off subject...Cool concept. ;)
