Arriving Christmas Day...a PTR

Our last trip to Disney was October 2010, and that was our first Disney trip as a couple. After being home for less than a week, we decided we needed to plan another trip immediately. After some discussion we settled on Christmas time, and when I say Christmas time I don’t mean just anytime during the two months long period that Disney has their decorations up, I mean CHRISTMAS - December 25! Yep, we’re those crazy people actually going to Disney from December 25th to January 3rd. We figured if we are going to hit one holiday while we are down there might as well hit them all…Christmas, New Years and my 25th Birthday (January 2). We are super excited about going so please no comments on how ridiculous it is during that time of year, trust me we know, we’ve read everything on this site (and others) about it and are well prepared for it! We will however accept helpful tips.

Now that we have the dates out of the way, on to where we’re staying. When we were discussing where to stay after we finally decided our dates (that I had to convince my boyfriend a bit that we’d be fine going on Christmas day) we had knew that we wanted to go a little bigger than our last trip when we stayed at All-Star Movies. We had no problems with this resort at all, we actually liked it a lot actually, but this time around we wanted to stay at a moderate. We had rented a SeaRaycer at DTD last trip and really liked the look of the Port Orleans resorts, one of my uncles also stayed at POR with his family the same time we were there and we went over to hang with them for a couple hours and he raved about the place. With this info in mind we decided that we like the old Bayou feel a little more than the French Quarter (what do we know though, honestly) so we booked POR.

We were pretty excited about staying at POR but the more we looked into the crowds at the hotels at the time we’re down there and from what we read it seems that POR is one of the busiest. My boyfriend’s family had stayed at CBR with his little brother and sister a few years back and they still haven’t stopped talking about it so we looked into CBR and decided that we could definitely stay there and enjoy it. CBR wasn’t just a hotel we picked out of the air it was on our list of places we were thinking about staying but it was definitely third behind the two Port Orleans resorts. Eventually we switched our reservation over to CBR and I think I can say we both couldn’t be happier. We don’t mind a big resort or having to walk a good amount to get places; we’re both young and have no children so it’s just us that we have to deal with.

Now that I’ve somehow managed to stretch where we’re staying into two unnecessarily long paragraphs about our decision making processes I feel that I should mention who we are. First there’s me, Lexi (Alex to anyone I didn’t go to college with or that doesn’t know me from this site. Then there’s AJ (ArtieJim on this site, he wrote our previous trip report which you can find here - October 2010 Trip Report).

We both had a secret love of Disney the first six months or so we dated until one of us brought up how much we love the soundtracks from Aladdin and Lion King and AJ suggested we should go to WDW one day. We both kind of chuckled about that and then he started looking into it for fun and realized it was much more affordable for us than we thought it would be for the budget we would have to set. Soon enough we booked and we were on our way.

During our last trip we became overwhelmed at the Food and Wine Festival and found our trip solely revolving around it.

We even canceled diner reservations one night at The Turf Club that I was really looking forward to just to walk around the WS even longer. Normally we wouldn’t have a problem with this, but we had already spent almost all of our time over there. We missed so many other things that we wanted to see and do. So that molded our plans for this trip…strolling around, taking our time, walking in and out of everywhere, oh and of course drinking around the world!!!

DSC00550.jpg

Now that the trip was booked we had to wait 400 days to see Mickey again. For months we stalked out JetBlue’s website waiting for flights leaving on December 25 to be released. When the dates were finally up on sale we booked the earliest flight we could, 6am from JFK. We’re lucky that I live close to JFK and my boyfriend, lives about twenty minutes from Newark Airport so our options are very open when it comes to flying places (especially Disney!) We got lucky with our flights, given that we leave Christmas Day, and only had to drop about $850 for the two of us round trip. If you book the same flights now, you would pay over $1,200!

ADRs: I managed to make our reservations 180 days out at 6:00am about an hour before the whole system went down for 2 days. The asterisks are for places we have never gone to before!

12/25 – Tony’s Town Square** for dinner followed by the Wishes Dessert Party**!
12/26 – Coral Reef for lunch and Biergarten for dinner**
12/27 – Turf Club for dinner**
12/28 – Yak and Yeti** for dinner followed by a Sleigh Ride in Fort Wilderness**
12/29 – Le Cellier for lunch**
12/30 – Ohana for dinner**
12/31 – Les Chefs for dinner
01/01 – Via Napoli for dinner
01/02 – Yachtsman for dinner**
01/03 – Home :(

Maybe I should have put asterisks at the restaurants we have been to since there are much less of those.

After 220 days of planning where we would eat, we only strayed a bit from our original plans. Biergarten was not on the original list but ArtieJim convinced me to say yes (I think he said he would pay out of his pocket and not our savings for this trip) and neither was 'Ohana. The restaurants I I’m most excited for though are Le Cellier and Yachtsman. I am definitely a picky eater but I seriously love steak and have not been to either of these restaurants yet.

It was pure luck that Christmas Day turned out to be the best time for us to arrive in Disney. Flying anywhere during that time is just ridiculous and flying on the actual holiday is so much cheaper then any of the time surrounding it. So add that to my work schedule (federal holidays are the best) I only had to take off 4 days of work for a 10day trip and it was a done deal!! Neither of us has been to Disney during the holiday season so we are beyond excited to see all the decorations and the extra magic at the parks!! :sohappy:

We have plans to go Magic Kingdom on the first day, Epcot on the second, MGM on the third and Animal Kingdom on the fourth.
uswithbabysimba.jpg

After that we are just winging it other than the 29th which is the day we plan on going around the World, this day we have carefully planned out so as not to be too ridiculous.

We’re going to start our day over at DHS (we still call it MGM, so we may be going back and forth between that in this PTR and the TR when we do finally write it, sorry) and hitting our three favorite rides over there. Did I say three? AJ’s yelling in my ear that he has FOUR favorite rides over there, even though he hasn’t been on the new Star Tours yet. He is a self-admitted Star Wars nerd. He had the special edition Droid 2 that was designed to look like R2-D2 until his best friend dropped it in a cup of beer and it won’t turn on anymore, he still mourns it and tries to get it working every day. I digress.

r2d2-droid.jpg

We plan on hitting TSMM, RnRC, ToT and the new Star Tours that morning before trying the few places there are to drink over at MGM and then talking a stroll down the Boardwalk and hitting a few of their places like Big River Grille since AJ loves craft beers now. Once we take our time enjoying the Boardwalk (that we love and want to stay at some day) we’re going to enter the International Gateway and make our way from UK down to Canada for our ADR at Le Cellier where we’re going to stuff our faces with delicious food and give us enough sustenance for the time being (at least AJ for the time being, he plans on trying many of the quick services around WS on this day as well to keep his stomach full). After this it’s over to Mexico and then around the other countries in the World.

Thinking of dropping 2 ADRs

With only 66 more days to go:sohappy:, we are thinking about ditching 2 of our reservations so that we have more time to try the food in Downtown Disney, specifically Portobello and Paradiso 37. So based on our ADRs we are thinking of dropping dinner at Yak and Yeti and lunch at Coral Reef. Anyone have thoughts about this??

16 Days to go!!

So after starting our countdown from 400+ days we are finally down to 16 days!!!! We received our Magical Express envelope in the mail last week and just received the other envelope from Disney.

http://www.flickr.com/photos// http://www.flickr.com/people/71699745@N02/

We decided to cancel our lunch reservation at Coral Reef after all the negative reviews and pictures and added lunch at Fulton's.

Now all that's left to do is keep a watchful eye on weather.com to make sure the weather doesn't take a turn for the worst like last year, pack and then celebrating Christmas Eve with our families!!!

As Alex mentioned above we did drop some of our original ADRs. Here is our final list of ADRs for our trip, which is in thirteen (hopefully) short days;

Day 1 - No change here, still going to Tony's followed by the Wishes Dessert Party. I can not wait for the Wishes Dessert Party, if the desserts are half as good as they look in the pictures I'm going to have to get an electric scooter just to roll myself down Main Street.

Day 2 - We dropped Coral Reef as Alex said, but we're still sticking with the Biergarten. I think I might be most excited for this meal, it's in the top three of excitement anyway. In the past year I've gained a serious liking for German food, don't know where it came from but it's here and we're going there so I can't wait.

Day 3 - No change, sticking with the Turf Club

Day 4 - We dropped Yak and Yeti, it seemed like the more we looked at the menu the less we wanted to go there. Our plan is to head to Animal Kingdom that day and then over to Downtown and try some of the restaurants/bars over there before we head to our sleigh ride.

Day 5 - Does anyone actually thing we'd drop our reservation at Le Cellier? We might be going to WDW during Christmas but we're not actually crazy.

Day 6 - Same as above, replace Le Cellier with Ohana and you have our thought process. These are two meals Alex and I are both very excited for, so these ADRs weren't going any where.

Day 7 - After much debate we decided to keep Les Chefs de France for dinner on this night, New Year's Eve. We also booked and dropped Fulton's for lunch twice since we made the Les Chefs ADR. In the end we chose not to do Fulton's today since we didn't want to risk (even the tiniest bit) of being locked out of a park. We don't think get to that stage of a closing but we'd rather not find out that it does the hard way.

Day 8 - Now we're going to Fulton's for lunch! I love a good seafood meal so here's hoping that I don't go disappointed. Big thanks to Alex for finally letting us book an ADR here since she hates seafood. Interesting for a girl that loves the beach so much. Later in the evening it's back to Epcot because we are still going to Via Napoli. We loved it last time we went and think that all the detractors on this site are insane. No disrespect to any one on this site but certain regions of this great country have certain specialties when it comes to food. We happen to live in New York, we have great pizza, you can't the same for the rest of the country (save for maybe Chicago and Boston). Via Napoli's pizza is better than some of the best pizza places in New York.

Day 9 - Sticking with the Yachtsman for Alex's birthday dinner. The girl loves steak so that's why we're going with three "steakhouses" on our trip.

Day 10 - We're leaving this day but do have 10 day park tickets, we're leaving this day open when it comes to an ADR. We don't have any idea what park we're going to or where we're going to eat, but we're sure it'll be something good. Chances are it'll just end up being quick service from around the World or something tasty over at Magic Kingdom, lets face it we're not wasting any more money on food at DHS than we need to (which is probably not going to be anything) and we're not heading back to Animal Kingdom after our one day there. We just don't feel like it's a multiple visit park. Sorry.

There it is.

I have literally just come back from the world at christmas.. Please read my trip report if you get chance... :)

I really enjoyed the build up to christmas week, but the 2nd week was manic.

However! The fact i was in disney world made up for it- you just have to be very clever. Get there for park opening and get the fastpasses you want as soon as you enter. After that I would have recommended booking your adr's which you have already! :) Otherwise... enjoy it! This year Magic Kingdom was closed by 10am and people did recommended that you don't even try and go there on christmas morning. We decided on epcot.. we booked the candlelight processional dinner package, got the reserved viewing area for illuminations and it was amazing. It was busy but we had a fabulous day. We rode soarin twice, test track, ellen, living with the land and did the majority of the world showcase.

You will have an amazing time- don't be put off by the crowds... ! xx
