We'll begin by telling you about one of the worst kept secrets on the Internet, the upcoming rehab of Pirates of the Caribbean. We've been keeping you updated on this topic for months now, and since our last update the project has been officially greenlit and received its funding. The refurbishment dates have also been firmed up, and the ride is now scheduled to close March 6th and reopen 15 weeks later on June 22nd. (The popular Blue Bayou restaurant will be closed that whole time as well.) When the ride does finally reopen in time for summer crowds, Disneyland visitors will find Jack Sparrow has moved in and tweaked the storyline of the 39-year-old ride to align more with the second and third sequels of the blockbuster original movie. Read on only if you want to learn of the surprises Walt Disney Imagineering currently has planned for both the Disneyland and Walt Disney World versions of the ride.

Anyone have any other sources that backs this up? I'm surprised they would change both attractions at the same time. You would think they would update one, gauge the guest reactions and then decide whether to make the changes to the other park. I guess the marketing tie to the 2nd movie is their primary reason for changing both next spring.

Yeah thats what you would think. But once again just rumors right?

Anything to improve our version makes me happy. Don't get me wrong I love pirates as is, but if we get some of the effects DL is getting, it should be a very good thing.

Does that sound exciting? Yes. Does that sound wrong? Yes.

If the "public" can't understand the attraction spawned the movie and that certain liberties were taken, it's really their problem. But I suppose I should be grateful they're not adding the elf and his girlfriend as well... :hurl:

I don't know. Like it or not, Capt Jack Sparrow is probably better associated with the name Pirates of the Carribean than anything in the original ride for most people. Heck, my wife had no idea the movie was based on a ride until I told her.

Mostly, I'm just excited to see the WDW version getting some upgrades. Hopefully it will be done well.

The article did not directly say that both refurbs would be happening at the same time. Also many of the rumors about the refurb of the WDW version included a que change much like at IASW which might very well lengthen the 15 week time frame mentioned in the article. Unfortunately like most articles on Micechat WDW is only briefly mentioned.

I'm all for this change, actually I'm all for any change to improve our Pirates. It truly is the worst one. However, they really need to enlarge ours more than anything else. I'm really not to worried about the movie tie-in. The imaginears know that if they screw this up there will be a huge backlash. As long as the new additions do not take me out of the story of the ride and simply enhance it I'm all for it. Thankfully there using movie references from a really great movie. It could have be worse. They could have went through with the Haunted Mansion tie-in instead. I don't even want to think about what a disaster that would have been. I'll stick with the POTC tie-in any day. I really am looking forward to this.

I had the same thought. If Jennifer Tilly suddenly started playing Madame Leota in HM, I'd be upset. But with the quality of the first PotC movie, I can accept it. Hopefully the sequels will be as good as the original.

DId anyone else get the idea from that article that they're gonna go all out on the Disneyland and then just try to cram a few effects into our "smaller, slightly less rehab friendly" version?

The DL version sounds awesome, but I'm finding it hard to picture it working in the WDW version of the ride. Maybe it's just me though

Ok, here are my feelings on altering either pirates. First what made the ride so great was the fact it was totally new to people back when these rides opened. Basically the technology was cutting edge.

Disneyland: March 18, 1967
Magic Kingdom: December 15, 1973

Hmm...that makes most of the technology in these rides at least 32 years old. And from the "rumored changes" description it almost sounds like Jack is going to be more of a side-show than an actual main character and most of everyone's favorite scenes (sans pirates chasing women) will still be there with updated sounds and better MORE MODERN effects.

Hopefully it is done better than the sword-fighting scene in DL Paris as I was truly let-down by how that looked as I expected much better. (Now, the Phantom Manor effects were truly spectacular though the ride was waaaay too short).

Plus, it makes my old videos of Pirates even cooler since I can show people what the ride USED to look like!

I hope you're right. I think it would be fun to have Jack Sparrow "pop-up" during the ride to surprise people, etc. I would just hate to see the ride get turned into "Jack Sparrow's ride."

Does this fundamentally alter the storyline of the ride? The (superior) Disneyland version gives the impression that the pirates were trapped in the cavern due to a cave in after fighting with each other over the treasure in the armory.
Now those skeletons at the beginning lack their ironic punch, they're just "there".

I hope what I'm reading between the lines is right too, lol...

It didn't "say" they would be done at the same time, but it noted that the WDW version would be marketed to the east coast as a tie-in to the release of the sequal. I believe it's supposed to be released the first of July next year, so that means the rehab would have to be done in the spring to be complete by July. That points to the same time frame as the DL refurb.

Honestly... I don't think they should touch the Disneyland version... as it's the original and best.

I wouldn't have too big of a problem with them changing WDW's, as it's just a watered-down version of DL's...

If they do it right it would be a good thing... if not... it could be terrible. I'm just worried...

Rainfully you are right about the DL version. Maybe I am naieve but I almost can't believe they are changing the original.

I don't mind the change, I would like to see the Jack Sparrow AA, and like anyone else some improvement to the technology of the current AA's.
We'll just have to wait and see what imagineering comes up with.

I wish WDW pirates was more like Disneyland. I saw a video online of the Disneyland version and it is a lot longer.

If you've ever seen the Disneyland version....there's no comparisons. The Disneyland version is so much better. I've got mixed emotions on the Jack Sparrow addition possibilty....while I like the movie...I'm not sure how much I want him or the movie added to the ride. The ride is a classic and really shouldn't be messed with too much....maybe a presence in a room or something.
