A Pirates League Question

When we go on our next adventure my 13 year old son will be going to play not 1 but 2 rounds of golf with his dad & Poppa. I told my 12 year old son about the new Pirate's League thinking he might be a little interested considering he loves to dress in various outfits (ie. Jason Vorhees or various covert ops guys from Metal Gear Solid 4) and run around playing very elaborate, roll-type games. I just wanted to do something special with him, too, since he's not so interested in playing golf & isn't old enough to do the backstage tours at Animal Kingdom. (We're already booked to do the Sunrise Safari.) So after telling him what the Pirate's League is, explaining the packages, and all that stuff he get's all jazzed & announces he wants the Captain's Package. Okay. I know the BBB castle package thing comes with the itchy, overpriced costumes and the little girls all eat it up. I just don't wanna buy him one of the pirate costumes and have it be crappy or uncomfortable. Soooo, do any of you know what quality the costumes are? Is there a decent selection? I'm still gonna try to talk him into letting Mimi & me put together a one-of-a-kind custom ensemble. (Mimi is a very talented seamstress & I can certainly hold my own.) But if those costumes are ordinary quality (like you get at the Halloween costume places) I may just put my foot down on this one.

I don't know the quality of the pirate costumes, but I have two daughters and have been through years and years of Disney World princess dresses with them....they have ALL been itchy and scratchy. (except the Alice in Wonderland dress) And...after starting buying the dresses 11 years ago...the quality has definitely gone down over that time.

Just from my experience....I would expect some discomfort from any costume purchased there. But with the girls....it's not how you feel...it's how you look.

I can't speak to the quality of the costumes there, but my son was Davey Jones, Jack Sparrow and the Skeleton Pirate from the Disney Store and all of those were good quality. They were around $35 each except for DJ which was ridiculously expensive. But unlike the princess stuff, there weren't scratchy fabrics or anything like that. I would look on ebay or even Disney Shopping and see if you can get one cheap now. My daughter has been a disney princess the last 3 years and all of the dresses have scratchy stuff. Hope this helps.

its simple to fix wear non scratchy stuff from home sweat pants long sleeve shirt and then put the costume on over that. its not hard i used to play paintball and believe me i know how to layer clothing. so it wont scratch.

We were at the Pirate's League on Halloween and it looked like the kids were pretty comfortable in the costumes. But since I tooke my big "kid" (the boyfriend) he wouldn't fit in one.

The costume my daughter got the empress pirate was great quailty and not scratchy at all she wore it all day and didnt want to take it off when it was time to go to bed. But if price is a huge problem just make the costume and bring it with you for him to wear as a surprise and I am sure he will be just as happy. He seems hes at an age where he can understand the value of money and explain to him its just to expensive to purchase the costume there when you can make on that better than what they have there. Have a great time!!!!

Layering clothing in the heat of FLA might not go over very well with the kids either.

For my kids I bought there costumes online (dd 14 a girly pirate dress and DS 10 Capitain Hook). They had a great time and were happy getting the costumes before hand. They arrive at the league dressed and the cms had some great bantering with them before we entered the back (which was great fun).
If your worried that the costumes are in your face and CMs asking you if you would like to purchase a costume, from our experiance and the others I saw that night that is not the case I dont even remember seeing any costumes on display. So I dont think you will have that dreaded moment that us moms hate when your kid looks at you and says "See mom I told You you should of bought me my costume here!" Not the case the cms are very much in character they are not trying to sell anything.
It was just plan old good fun. My kids had a great time and are dying to go back next year. This is are new must do. Have a great time
