Alright folks, Imagineer99 won the last contest, and as such got to choose the topic and the style for this contest, and he chose a ride poster for Soarin', which is currently under construction at Epcot.

The current WDI poster looks like the attached image (courtesy of the WDWMagic Soarin' home page http://www.wdwmagic.com/soarin.htm). I-99 thinks we can do better -- and I'm inclined to agree. There's a lot of talent here, so let's have at it.

Since this is a poster contest and not a Waltpaper contest, let's take a look at the rules.

Size: must be 480 pixels wide x 720 pixels high, 72 dpi. If it's not the right size, it won't be accepted for judging.

Formats: same as always, JPG, GIF, or PNG.

Deadline: midnight Feb. 7, 2005 (Poster contests generally take more time, so you have more time to work on them).

PHOTOS! This is a pure, unbridled work of creativity -- so it must be your own work. If you want to use a photo in your work, it must not look like a photo. Use effects, redraw it using the tools in your creative suite, or whatever it takes, but nothing too photo-esque will be accepted. Final say on what is acceptable will be up to the Photo Contest board of directors.

So there it is! This is for the Soarin' at Epcot, so grab those creative ideas and take off!

Joe

Mine

Since I chose the topic, I kinda had a day head-start. I did this last night. :)

I think I may have overworked it a bit, but I just didn't know when to quit...

A little complicated for me and my ol' pal Paint, but I'll try. I've got a day off from school tomorrow, so I'll accumulate ideas today.

Sweet glorious weekend, I await thee!

After a snowy and despairing week of midterms, which have yet to be completed, the weekend shall provide a welcome respite of solitude, coziness, and time with which I shall do my best to create a truly outrageous poster of dynamic proportion and unmatched visual Appeal. That, or I'll make one of my usually mediocre entries in about 10 minutes. The important thing is, exams will be done.

Lord, how I simply Detest exams!

They are Despicable.

oh Bother...

I added the deadline, midnight, Feb. 7, 2005. Sorry about that. I'm looking forward to seeing the creativity around here. :)

Just to try to keep this contest rolling, I'll try to get something together and posted tonight.

These poster contests used to rock, but I think we've all become too lazy to make original stuff. That applies to me, too. I won't be spending several hours on this one like I did with my past posters, but nonetheless, I'll get something up. :)

I made something, I'm just trying to make parts of it seem less photolike. So far, I'm working with the theme of airline peanuts (my little tribute to the organic theme of The Land).

And so, the decline continues.

Glad to see you have such a positive outlook. I still say it's the subject. Case in point: There isn't a whole lot of source material for Soarin', top that off with making this a poster contest, which is even harder than a wallpaper contest, and of course the decline will continue.

How about using subjects that the majority of the folks relate to. How many folks here have been to Disneyland much less rode Soarin'. I've been to Disneyland a couple of times but that was in the early 80's. No Soarin' for me.

Also, source material is a big issue. When you use subjects that have little to no source material, it makes all the entries look pretty much the same. i.e. the "Boardwalk" contest. That's a turn off for entering right there.

Now, let's go one step further and make it a poster contest. This is one of the hardest themes to create when done correctly. I only know of 2 or 3 people here who actually pull it off. I wish I was one of them. LOL! IMO I don't think just applying a filter makes an entry look like a Disney poster.

Maybe we should go back to voting on the subject matter like we used to instead of letting the winner pick. Those contest seemed to generate more entries. Maybe it's because folks felt like they had more of an input into the subject and decided to participate. We could let the top three suggest 2 subjects each, then everyone vote on the one they like best. I think it went something like that. Anyway just a suggestion.

Take Care,

That's the point. I don't want topics with a lot of stock photos. That would be a futile endeavor.

Any person can google search a picture of cinderella castle, slap some text on it, and call it a wallpaper. Why not challenge yourself?

My reasons for choosing a "poster" contest was so that people could creatively improve on the crap poster that WDI presented us. I thought it would be fun, I guess not.

If you think my poster is too filtered, I apologize. I did spend some time on it, but admittedly, I could have spent more.

These contests should be fun. I just find it interesting that all the topics I choose are totally devoid of any entries. Maybe, as you say, my topics are just too obscure. I guess I can accept that. I have no problem with letting somebody else form a topic.

Frankly, and honestly, the past two contests have left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. Nobody specifically has done anything wrong--it's just that it seems that as a group we've become a tad lethargic (although it's probably all in my head ;) ).

So, I thank you for your comments. You really made me realize a great deal about how these contests should best be run. I appreciate your candor and your honesty.

For now, though, I think that this is going to be the last wdwmagic.com digital media editing contest I'm going to enter for a while. I think speck's photocontests are going to become my focal contests on this site. I just don't feel the "energy" that I used to. Maybe I'll change my mind in future.
I can get my photoshop fix at other websites (namely worth1000).

So, I apologize for the lengthy post. Thanks for listening all! Your a great group of people. These contests were fun and I'm glad I got to participate when I did.

I swear I'm gonna get something up for this contest, it's just that everytime I sit down at my desktop to do one I end up working on WDW Virtual Visit instead! lol

Like I said, I'll get something up. It won't be Tower of Terror poster quality (I spent close to 12 hours on that one if I recall correctly LOL), but it'll look purty pretty. :)

I agree with both statements, but it can't be too hard to find photos. I also think that you should have to alter your photo somehow or make a collage.

Posters done right are hard and like I said only a few can do it right. I'm not a big filter fan, except for sharpen, cause I like a crisp image. That's all I was saying.

I agree they should be fun, but fun for everyone. You find your topics interesting but don't enjoy the contest because no one participates. Where's the happy medium? Like I said I think maybe we should go back to voting on the topics. What does everyone else think?

I'm only suggesting going back to the way we used to do them because we had more entries. But that may not solve the low entry problem. Maybe folks are just too busy. I know all us folks in Florida have been pretty busy with hurricane problems for a while and a lot of folks still have a ways to go.

Don't give up on the contest completely. Just enter the ones you find interesting. Like you said, this should be fun. You shouldn't feel like you need to enter every contest. By the way, I go to worth1000 also.

No need to apologize. That's what family is for. I mean who else can you vent too.

I can agree that the top three finsishers picking topics to vote on was the best method. As you said, ACE, at least everyone felt involved in choosing.

I'm not entering this one, not because it isn't a good idea (because it is), it's just my abilities (tied in with a mouse that dances around the screen by itself) are not upto scratch to pull it off (IMO). It'll just end up making me frustrated (...the mouse)

I'll be more than happy to vote though.

(Og, secretly waiting for the 2005 Avatar contest :D )
