Is it only a rumor that they are opening 250 new Disney Stores?

Can any Disney Store CM's tell me if the memo of 250 new stores, is true? And what it said.... I was a CM at a Ohio Disney Store that closed June 14th, 2008. I had heard a rumor one was opening at Kenwood Mall, now another CM in Tenn., mentioned a memo. Any info, please????

All I need is one - ONE - in the St. Louis area. I have to drive about 150 or so miles to get to a Disney Store.

I can't see them reopening them. These kinds of stores have a very difficult time making a lot of money since they are strictly a specialty store. Dealing with other stores that sell Disney-related merchandise makes it all the harder.

They weren't making money so Disney sold them, they continued to not make money and Disney bought them back and closed tons of them and to be honest....they aren't doing so hot now either.

Yeah they closed down most of the ones in my area recently (within the past decade). I doubt they're gonna open up 250 new ones. . . .

It's a shame quite a few are shutting down.

I am lucky at the moment, as we have two in the near cities in Manchester and Liverpool which hopefully won't shut down. I don't think they coud shut them down as they recently moved the one in Manchester and opened a new one in Liverpool and you can see that a lot of money has gone into the store so I don't think they will close them yet.

I miss them! I miss the old, original ones, prior to being bought out, dumbed down and stuffed full of general merch. that you can get anywhere! I really miss the old catalog as well. That is where I bought most of my purchases!

I'm 100% with you. Although I do save more money now

If I were Disney I might open a few. Timing the market is tricky, but with retail sales down anoter 1% this month, and the economy pretending like it's about to pick up, Disney could see themselves in good shape if they position their stores around the demographics that are predicted to be those to kick off a spending flood once consumer confidence starts to return. With the leveraged buyout and acquisitions they have been making, they are in position to spend a little and take a chance. I'm not sure if the Disney stores can be the cash cow they once were, but if I were Disney I wouldn't want to miss the spending flood that many predict will happen in the next 18 months.

The UK ones do very well and are currently being slowly refitted.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if the UK ones were doing well or not.

I like the refits the new design, I have only walked past the one in Manchester but I always think it looks massive from the outside of the store.

I was a manager at one of the Disney Stores that ended up closing a few years back. It was my understanding that one of the biggest reason for the stores closing (aside from The Children's Place taking over ownership at the time), was because the market became saturated with the stores. In the MPLS/St Paul where I lived, there were 5 stores at all of the major malls (including Mall of America), and those 5 stores were within 15-20 miles of each other. In the end, all they did was steal business from each other. Every store except Mall of America ended up closing. I don't forsee them making that mistake again.

Sadly, I was not upset to see the stores around me close. We had one at each major mall within an hour or each other (some closer) and the difference in merchandise from when they first opened to more recently saw a huge decline.

I thought the stuff that they sold was very mediocre at best.

I really do not see that happening. James Fielding said the new focus is to revamp EACH AND EVERY store in the chain. Sell through the CP merchandise that was pre ordered and then start with a fresh mix of Disney merchandise.

He also stated that he wants to limit the number of stores so that each location can be a Disney shopping destination that is special and unique.

I think it is smart to keep the stores to under 300 and focus on them with new redesigns, merchandise, and a new Guest focus. Disney Store lost the Guest focus to push sales. It backfired and now they should not make that mistake again.

The European Disney stores are a completely different part of the company. They were never part of the children's place deal, and do pretty well for themselves.

We really didn't get all the details, but we are kinda wondering if they meant they would have a total of 250, stores. As apparently, that is about what they had to start with. As we have been told Hoop, is the one that started closing a bunch of them. I know ours was profitable and scheduled to stay open, but the Mall was causing trouble, so they just closed our store. I tend to believe this rumor, even though I can't get more details, I did talk to my old Asst. Manager, last week and he said that one is still on the books for a Mall not far from us about 45 minutes, as soon as they can get in the Mall
