Giant Luxo/Luxo Jr. coming to Pixar Place?

OK, so I am officially starting a rumor (you heard it here first!) But it's at least based in fact, with some educated guessing of my own thrown in...

There have been a few paperwork filings with the county that lead me to believe that there's a giant Luxo (or Luxo Jr) coming to Pixar Place, perhaps an animatronic one.

First, back in Early February, there was the filing for "Luxo Speakers Package" at an address on Stage Lane. (Stage Lane is the backstage access road that runs behind Midway Mania)

Then today there were two more.
The first that I opened was "Pixar Street Figure Masking Package". Hmmm... So they need to build something to mask something else on 'Pixar Street'... Then came the last bit of paperwork: "Luxo at Mania Building; Add aluminum structure includes all electrical".

Aha! They're adding a large, aluminum Luxo lamp outside Midway Mania. Normally, I'd just think that it'd be a large immobile prop. But why would something like that require speakers?

So now for the idle guessing portion of the post:
In my mind, I'm envisioning a large animated Luxo lamp mounted on top of one of the buildings. Every once in a while, he'll pop up, look around (shine his light around Pixar Place at night?), make some noises like in the short film, and then fold down and disappear.

Or perhaps he'll always be visible, and will be in a "static" display position most of the time, but every once in a while he'll move around.

Or, could he possibly be a new entry in the Living Character Initiative? He could be a puppet controlled by someone backstage...

That's pretty convincing evidence you've got there. Who am I to discredit the rumor. Anyone know if this is indeed happening?

Hmm...very interesting, and very good digging!

I would guess it is not for a Livign Character initiative projectm or at least not one like Lucky or the new Wall-E charcater that wold actually raom the park. First, why would the character necessarily need speakers to be placed in the area? Secondly, disney did not release the Wall-E character into the parks because they were afriad of the good possibility of someone trying to get him to compact trash or some other destrctive action by a guest. I would say the same issus would be a concern for Luxo.

I do like the idea of having a Luxo animatronic on the building that would swivel around at various times of the day. that would be pretty neat to see.

OK, so I guess it's not quite "you heard it here first" :animwink:, but I swear that I hadn't seen any of that when I came up with my own hypothesis.

Thanks for the link! After seeing the "Luxo Jr Lighting" door back in September, I was wondering why it was there... I thought it was just as a cute decorative touch. Now I know there were plans for more than that.

I was just backing you up (not that you needed it). Your hypothesis sounds very likely. All those permits you found are no doubt making this thing sound even more real! I'd be quite thrilled if this comes to light, I love Luxo Jr.

Uhm...My guess would be work on the lamp inside TSMM, that "lights" Mr. Potato head, and new speakers for him. But that was just my first thought, I don't know anything.

I think this is a very valid rumor (not that I have the best judgement rumor-wise on this site, but still) and I think this could happen... But my one concern is- I don't think it would be an animatronic. It would slow down guests in a very high-traffic area of the park.

I do remember saying (in one of my armchair imagineering moments) that it would be cool if they put a moving luxo lamp with a high intensity light and camera so that someone could remotely shine it on a random guest from backstage and follow them around in a kind of "living initiative" feature. I still think it would be fun if they did do it.

I believe it, and if so, it will probably look spectacular and move fluidly.

This is happening. Luxo will be there near Toy Story Mania.

Luxo will come out and interact with lights and electronic items in Pixar Place. He will move around, flash his light and then hop away.

The mini black Luxo, Jr on the street sign was there when Pixar Place opened. It disappeared for a while, but did recently come back.

Read through the thread linked to at Studios Central. It gives a bit more info on what's planned in terms of this project.
