The DL calendar is showing the Sun Wheel going down for a refurbishment starting Sept. 11, 2008 till sometime past Oct 30 (the DL calendar stops showing dates after that day so it could be longer)

One can only guess since its been rumored for a while that sun face is being replaced with a Mickey face during this refurb. With it will come new LED lighting and a new walkway/pier thing around the wheel. I think somewhere said that the Mickey face is also to hide some equipment for the World of Color show.

so heres the concept art.

Overall-

Paradise Pier once all is said and done-

Sun Wheel alone with walkway things-

Lets hope that with this refurb it also takes out the last 4 Midway Games to get rethemed as well as the facades of the shops. Then well at least have half of the pier re-done.

Edit- If you can't see the pics see post #7

As a guy who will be visitin DLR in August 2009, the schedule of the entire re-theming of DCA seems to be thoroughly unambitions. Why was the scheduling for these projects drawn out so much?

In a short shot heres why....
All of these delays and temporary setbacks that have cropped up over the last 60 days may be discouraging to Disneyland fans. And yet it's still important to remember that we really should not have had formal confirmation from Disney about all of this stuff for another year or two. The Billion dollar makeover for DCA really was announced about 18 months earlier than it should have, and only because the political climate of October 2007 still had Anaheim's city council willing to change the intent of the Resort District for some easy money from a housing developer.

Anyways back to the Sun Wheel. It will be a bit odd I guess for a bit to see the Sun and Mickey swap places on the pier but also nice to see Paradise Pier get a nice new big sign.

Those outside SoCal likely have no idea how "under attack" Disneyland Resort was in 2006 and 2007 from a cornball city council being wooed by a slimy housing developer. And the local and national media jumped on the story with the tagline "Disneyland Is Against Affordable Housing For It's Workers!".

It was a sleazy, muckraking time for the media, and it was a story that really had Disneyland and the Disney Company cornered. The only way out was to try and remind everyone all of the wealth and happiness (and taxes) that Disneyland brought to the area for 50+ years.

And isn't it amazing how different things are just 9 months later. The housing market has collapsed, and the builder at the center of it all, SunCal, is nearing banktrupcy and destruction.

And Disney fans have this huge media announcement that 1.2 Billion will be spent on DCA over the next four years. We really are very lucky to know all that we do about what will happen in DCA from 2009 to 2012.

You can't view the concept art unless you are a member of mice chat. Care to post the pictures here?

Hmm didn't know that thanks for pointing that out :D

Sun Wheel by it self with the new walkway-

Elevation(this one seems to be the most spot on for everything so far since the TSMM building is exactly the same.

From the DCA make over begins" thread because theres this thread on the same thing and the title of the other is a bit misleading since so far its only Sun Wheel :)-
"But why?" is what I'm asking.

I think its because the new Mickey face will be holding some of the effects for the new World of Color show. Plus Paradise Pier also gets a big sign again since it lost the old one to TSMM.

I wonder what kind of a roll it will play. It looks like they're almost switching out the two items (Mickey now on the sun wheel, and a new sun logo on California Screamin'). I just hope they don't get rid of all the lights on the Sun Wheel.

The Sun Wheel is huge a lot bigger in person than in pics so it will be interesting to see what happens when the Mickey head it put on. I wouldn't worry about the light :) its been said that the lights on the Sun Wheel are going to be replaced with LED. Which does have a nice look since the TSMM building uses them too.

You wanta ride the Sun Wheel? lol :D the thing terrifys me just looking at it mainly the swinging cars haha

Anyways just bumping this since Sept. is almost here and that will then mean the refurbishment will start. Also Pardise Bay is rumored to be drained as well in the fall so World of Color can start to go in. So get your pics in now of the Sun face before it leaves forever.
