Minicot: Epcot themed July 4th celebration

Every 4th of July we have a gathering of family and friends at the house which concludes with a small display of consumer fireworks. A couple years ago we built a switch panel and ignited the fireworks (crudely synchronized to Illuminations ROE music) using model rocket igniters. Not all of them went off, but it was fun.

Since both my brother and I are Disney fanatics (particularily Epcot), we decided for this 4th of July to make the whole event an Epcot center theme with patriotic overtones. We are calling it "A day at Minicot"

Here is what we've got planned:

1. We will hide a few speakers and pipe in the various Entrance and Innoventions area music loops around the property.

2. Soarin - We are doing a small re-creation of the Soarin ride using a projector, 10x13 foot homemade screen slanted at an angle and a swinging chair that holds 2 people. We will have fans going and maybe even try to to use some Pine and Orange scents. There will be a conopy over the chair and sides so that the riders will only see the screen. We may even have someone slightly swing the chair at the right moments to simulate the ride....I'm sure it will be far from the real experience, but fun anyway.

To get a high quality projection, we decided to put together our own Soarin video using video clips from a bunch of different DVDs, here is a link to video we will use:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vJZJoKphwc

3. Mexico - The deck will be decorated with Mexico theming playing El Rio del Tiempo music in a loop. We will serve Mexican food, churro's and such.

4. Club Cool - We will set up a section with a bunch of unique soda's for sampling and little dixie cups. Hopefully we can find some awful tasting soda like Beverly!

5. Fireworks show - Using (of course) Illuminations ROE music. For this I built a homemade 32 queue launcher that connects to the computer and can be pre-programmed to launch fireworks in sync with the music.

Since 32 fireworks isn't really that much, I'm supplementing the show with a light display using Light-o-rama computerized controllers connected to Mini-lights, flood lights, strobes, etc. that will also be sync'd to the music. During the earth-globe sequence, we will add the patriotic element. Maybe a recitation of the Declaration of Independance.

Once the show starts, we will kick back and watch. The computers will run everything (in the tradition of Epcot style automation).

That's about it, we will film the whole thing and post clips on youtube of the event.

That sounds like so much fun. Very creative. I wish we could all go so we all could imagine we are at Disney World. Have fun and enjoy your 4th!

Moxie. -shudders-

Sounds like a lot of fun! Do you allow party crashers? :lookaroun

Moxie is perfect! My Husband worships the stuff and I can't bring myself drink it, the smell makes my eyes water!
Sounds like your 4th will be a blast! Unfortunatley here in MA fireworks are so illegal. (although you can get them with a quick drive over the border.) But I live in a neighborhood right on the water with a ton of old (and young) farts who flip out over stuff like that! Happy 4th!

Moxie, never heard of it....But thanks for the tip, sounds like a good Beverly type substitute.

I live in Minnesota, which legalized smaller fireworks a few years ago at the behest of then Gov. Jesse Ventura...one of the few things he did right! We may exceed the limits just a bit, but I'm in a rural setting so it's usually no problem.

Sounds like fun, you should add some rim lights(little white lights that outline each country) to your house and use some wash lights(the blue and purple flood lights) and some colored strobe lights and then your house will become of the countries and you can tie that into to your computer program also.

I approve. Not only of this Minicot idea, but also of Moxie. It's root beer. It's Angostura bitters. It's very refreshing!

You read my mind!! I will be lining my house and pole barn with rim lights. They will turn on seperately in sequence with the point in the music that the nations light up in the real show. I also have ground level strobes to mimic the water level ones in the real show as well as curtain strobes to allow me to put groups of strobes in close proximity like they have on the nations.

To simulate the water level shells (the ones they do right after the very first large aerial shell when the show starts) I will ignite a small morter shell on the ground with the lift charge removed.

July 4th - Minicot

I'm looking forward to the 4th, we'll be doing a final setup of Soarin on Saturday and we always like to play Epcot music while working, its been a lot of fun :)

For our kids this is becoming one of their favorite holidays, a very unique and memorable experience. We'll show you all the highlights afterwards with maybe a surprise or two up our sleeves :animwink:

BTW - I'm the other brother..

Go to www.mainegoodies.com and click on Moxie Soda. It's a fun piece of Americana! I think you could even order some!

I looked up the website, it looks perfect! Funny, they also advertise it as you either love it or hate it....I'm tempted to order some.

Thanks to all of the kind replies, this is my kind of community!! When I've explained all we are doing to non-WDW fanatics they look at me puzzled like "why would you go to all of that hassle?"

It is funny the way the non disney fanatics act, they just don't understand!
Good luck with your party and post pictures!!!!!!!!!

Went great, still working on the video

It truly went better than we could have imagined. I kept waiting for something to break down on Soarin and everything ran perfectly. Folks were truly amazed and had lots of nice things to say.

We just re-shot some of the footage on Wednesday, just on Soarin, and I suspect we'll have the video posted to youtube by the end of the month. A few folks have commented that my site is confusing, and it is, but I just haven't had time to get it up to speed. I hope to have it improved by tomorrow and once the video is posted I'll come back here.

Thanks for your interest :)
