airtran airways reservation change fees

Just wanted to let everyone know about the fees airtran charges for changing a flight. When I booked a flight last night from orlando to pittsburgh, I accidentily selected the date I am to arrive in orlando, instead of the date I'm supposed to leave. when I called airtran to change my dates on the flight they wanted to charge me $75 per person, for a total of $316, im assuming taxes made up the $16 difference. southwest, who I normally use to book airfare, doesn't charge these fees, you simply would pay the difference in airfare.

just wanted everyone who flies to be aware of this. and I know it was my mistake, but it was a mistake, and I would have thought they could have let me change flights in exchange for my future business.

That stinks, I am sorry to hear it. It is such a waste of hard earned money. However, most airlines charge $100 change fees. I guess Airtran's fee is cheaper because they are a discount airline.:(

I'm flying AirTran next week and originally booked an early flight coming home (it was cheapest) - about a week later the evening flight price went down substantially and I really wanted that flight but the $75 change fee was more than the ticket. I called anyway and got no where, but then I called again 2 days later and just asked how much the change fee would be to get a later flight (acted like I didnt know how much) and the Cust Service agent told me $75, but offered to WAIVE it without me even asking!!! She totally made my day!!
You should try calling again to see if someone else might be more understanding (call early in the morning - AirTran usually has awfully long hold times during the day!) Good luck!!

At least be happy you can get the flights you want...

My friend is/was booked on AirTran for September. He got a great deal on non-stop flights between Washington Reagan and MCO. Last week, AirTran re-structured their flights out of Washington and eliminated ALL non-stops between there and MCO.
So where my friend used to have a 9AM departure with an arrival just after 11AM, he now has to leave at 6:30AM with a layover in Atlanta and only gets in 30 minutes earlier.
And the early flight is his only option, otherwise he's not getting in until late afternoon and wastes the whole day traveling.

That's too bad about the restructuring. This will be the first time I've used AirTran and I don't know anyone who's flown with them and how reliable they are. I've been checking the website almost everyday for fear of them changing/cancelling my flights because I got such a great deal too! Only 7 days to go.....I'm keeping my fingers crossed :)

On a side note, I live in NY and I must say I love AirTran's website!! It shows flights from all 4 of my local airports on the same page so you can compare - it is SO easy!! I usually fly JetBlue but have always found it annoying to have to re-enter all details instead of just changing airport.

I'm really suprised considering you called the immediately. They should have waived the change fees. I would be calling back asking for a supervisor NOW!! I can understand if there is a difference in the pricing but they should not have charged you the change fee.

Good luck with AirTran! Sometimes it can be very frustrating talking to the customer service people, but I sincerely wish you the best of luck. I have my own little personal drama with AirTran and am hoping to get it worked out.

I guess you get what you pay for, right?:brick:

Hopefully it will all work out!

I am never going to fly AirTran again. We flew with them to Vegas in Feburary and the airplane was dirty, noisy and the attendants acted like they did us all a favor by bringing the drink cart by. You do get what you pay for and I will pay for more service in the future! Good luck to the OP getting the fee back.

I agree with SMK. We flew AirTran last September. We were delayed for over four hours because the flight crew never showed up!

The only good thing is that they had business class seats open and so we were able to upgrade for just $80 a ticket. Well worth it if you ask me.

In the end though we will probably not fly AirTran again.

I agree that the OP should call back and ask for a supervisor - accidents happen! I've had good luck with a similar situation with US Airways, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

I also have an AirTran story and will not be flying with them again. My main complaint is that after you select the flights that meet your needs, they change the schedules - and not by just a little. I was bumped from non-stop flights (RT) to connecting flights with massive layovers. The changes reduced my time at WDW by 1/2 a day. I called and requested more reasonable flights and was somewhat accommodated. I still had to take a whole day off work instead of a 1/2 as planned on my departure date and take a connecting flight down (non-stop back, but departed MCO much earlier than when originally booked).

Then - when I arrived at the airport to depart for MCO, I was told there was room on the non-stop flight (which took off an hour and a half after the flight I was booked on, but arrived earlier). They switched me at no fee and when I boarded the flight, it was half full. Why did they move me from that exact same flight a month earlier?

Oh - they issued me a $4.15 credit when they changed my flights. I won't be using it - any takers? :drevil:

In addition to my friend's woes that I mentioned above, AirTran has also changed my flight from Boston to MCO. At least it's still a non-stop, and it's only been moved 20 minutes earlier.

On the trip I'm flying AirTran down to Orlando, and flying JetBlue home. This will be my first time on either airline. Something's telling me I'll like the JetBlue flight better... (Though it *is* the flight home, which is NEVER a happy event...)

I also made a mistake on booking a flight with Airtran a few weeks ago. As long as you sign up for an account on their web site & you call with in 4 hours of making the reservation you can get your money refunded with no charge but it is just put into your account as a credit for the next purchase so you actually dont get your money back. You just get to buy a new ticket with a penalty.

yeah they kept telling me about the 4 hour window yesterday. But since I booked the flight before bed, I didn't notice the mistake till morning. next time I'll just go with southwest.

A co-worker flew AirTran to Orlando last year and used DME for ground transportation. After they arrived at MCO for their flight home, they discovered that AirTran had changed the schedule for their return flight - by 7 hours! They were stuck in the airport with a 4-yr old for 7 hours - unacceptable!!!

We flew Airtran last December and it was a great experience, way better that Delta who we have flown with in the past. We're booked again for Sept. and had no problem with selecting Airtran for that trip as well.

Southwest gets all of my business because they have great fares and NO change fees. I do not know of another airline with no change fees. I used to fly AirTran and US Airways but now I use Southwest exclusively unless they do not serve the airport I need to get to. Luckily they serve Orlando!

It looks like they dropped the non-stops to MCO only from Washington Reagan/National. You can still fly Airtran non-stop from Washington Dulles or from Baltimore-Washington to MCO.
