My first trip report: April 23-30

I have been to WDW before, but this was my first experience staying on property and this is my first time posting a trip report. Prior to this trip (and with the exception of my very first visit as a pre-teen in 1987), I had always stayed in the same Super 8 motel on Vine Street in Kissimmee. I stayed there with some friends the first time, just to spend as little as possible on the room so as to have more money to spend in Florida. Being the sentimental person that I am, I thought it would be cool to stay in the same motel on our honeymoon in 2003, again, with the thinking that we won't be in the room much anyway, so why pay more for the room when I could save that money to use on activities. So, the wife and I stayed at that same motel the next two times that we went to Florida. However, this time, we wanted to try the full WDW Resort experience, so we booked a room at Port Orleans Riverside. And, despite all the complaining that I will do at various times in this trip report, overall I had a very good time and totally hope to return and do it again next year. And, I found out that the saying is true that "once you stay on property, you never go back". I had originally planned on going back to Kissimmee next year and staying in the ol' Super 8 again, so as to save money and do Sea World, Bush Gardens and Universal again as well as a couple days at Disney. But now I think I want to stay on property again! Anyway, we bought 10 day parkhopper passes with no expiration, with the intent of only using 6 days and thereby coming home with 4 unused days to use later. But, as I will explain later, we only used 5 days, so now I have a 5 day, prepaid parkhopper to use next year, or whenever it is we may go next! :sohappy: Anyway, enough with the introductory stuff and on with the trip report!

Sunday April 22

Got up at 4 AM to get ready for our big road trip. We got the baby to the wife's parents', while I had to run up to Walmart real quick to get a can of formula, as that can wouldn't have lasted throughout the day, let alone the whole week. That gave the wife a chance to say her goodbyes to him while I was at Walmart. We left about 6:30 AM (Central Standard Time), right on schedule. Surprisingly, my wife did very well and didn't cry at all about leaving the baby for a week. Driving through south through Southern Illinois, we saw traffic majorly backed up in the Northbound lane and I wondered if that pleasant situation would still be awaiting me on our return back home. It was. :brick: I'll get back to that later. Drove through Kentucky and Tennessee and Georgia, and finally stopped at around 10:30 PM (Eastern Standard Time) in a town just over the Florida State line. Got a motel room for the night and picked up the final few hours the next morning.

Monday April 23

Checked into Port Orleans, Riverside around 10 or 10:30 or so. Beautiful Resort. We both loved it. Room wasn't ready, nor had I expected it to be, since check in isn't until 3 PM. I got our key to the world cards and we went about checking out our resort. We went into the gift shop and bought some souveniers right off the bat, including a lanyard for myself, a Port Orleans Riverside pin, and a box of cheap, starter pins. I traded on pin with a woman in the gift shop that day, then decided that of the remaining six pins, I would trade one per day until Sunday, which was our last full day there. We then walked over to French Quarter and looked around. We both liked ours better, although the wife didn't really care for FQ at all, whereas I still thought it was nice. We got lunch in the Food Court at FQ. We ran into Kissimmee to get some sparkling grape juice at the same Walmart where it is our tradition to visit on every trip. The wife wanted to drink sparkling grape juice in the gazeebo right outside of our mansion that night. We went back to WDW property and drove by Pop Century, but neither of us were impressed enough to explore further by getting out of the van. So we just looked as we drove by and commented how there is really nothing to do outside except walk through the parking lot. Neither of us cared much for it, but then again, that's why it's a "value" resort: you get what you pay for and if you want the pretty atmosphere, you pay for it by staying at a higher priced resort. We drove into Coronado Springs and stopped and got out of the van to look around. We both liked it. I really wouldn't mind staying there sometime, although I really loved POR and would just as soon stay there again. I called to check on the room again and it still wasn't ready. So we concluded that they probably don't tell you it's ready until 3 PM...which is about when they did tell me it is ready. We got to our room and unpacked and really liked the grounds and our room.

We went to the Contemporary Resort for a 6 PM ADR at Chef Mickey's. We got there a little bit early so we could ride the monorail and look around the resort a little. My wife totally didn't like the resort. She thought it was ugly and tacky. I didn't completely agree, but I do think that it is kind of bland. But yet, sort of cool looking, too. It would be one of my last picks based on atmosphere and theming, but it's close proximity and easy access to MK definitely earns it some points. We really enjoyed Chef Mickey's. Good food and good atmosphere, and we got some pictures of each other with some characters. After supper, we went to Kissimmee to play mini-golf at Pirates Island, where we always play when we come to Florida. Had a good time as always.

I had originally planned to take my wife to the Poly to watch Wishes at 10, but she seemed to prefer to spend the evening at our own resort instead. Since the whole point was to do something I thought she would find romantic, I figured we may as well do what she wants to do, so we went back to the grounds and spend the rest of the evening at POR, and we drank that Sparkling grape juice in the gazeebo. We also took the boat ride to Downtown Disney, although we did not look around. The wife didn't care to go to Downtown Disney, so all we did was get off the boat (since we were told it was one way only at that time of evening) and then get right back on the next boat to head back to Riverside. We did not enter any theme parks that day.

Tuesday April 24

It was morning EMH day at Epcot, so we went there at 8 AM or so and spent the entire day, finishing with Illuminations. Did several "firsts" that day. Prior to this visit, we had never done the China Movie, the American Adventure, O Canada, The Circle of Life or Journey into Imagination. Also, it was our first time back since 2005, so it was our first time doing "The Seas with Nemo", the new Grand Fiesta in Mexico and the new version of "Living with the Land" with the automated spiel. For reasons I will explain in a minute, we missed out on O Canada and the Circle of Life on Tuesday's visit. I never even new that Journey into Imagination was a ride. I was expecting a movie or a walkthrough thing, but was surprised to see that it was a ride and that I had totally missed it all these times. I guess I've been in too much of a hurry in the past, perhaps in part because of the limited time I have had in the Disney parks, as opposed to the whole week on property that I had this time. Anyway, there are a couple reasons we didn't get all these things done on that day. One reason was that I was trying to go at a slower pace, allowing us both (especially my wife) to enjoy it a little more, instead of my usual pace of "dragging her around" as my wife says, and wearing her out. Secondly, I have noticed that I have seen this guy named Art Lark on TV (in the Samantha Brown Great Hotels show), as well as in a couple of publications, so I thought it would be neat to go meet him in person. On the Great Hotels episode where Samantha visits the Yacht and Beach Club, she meets Art at the lobby and they discuss pin trading. So, I thought it would be awesome to walk over there and meet him and trade a pin. My wife griped at me the whole way over there about me dragging her over there, and told me that he'd better be on duty that day, or she's just gonna sit there for an hour and rest and make me wait for her. Well, fortunately for me, Art was on duty. I was thrilled to be able to meet him in person, so I went up to him and introduced myself and shook hands, and I told him how I had seen him on TV and had wanted to meet him. He was such a wonderful, nice man, and he told me that he felt very blessed to know that I made a point to come over and meet him. I traded a pin with him, and the pin I got from him was shaped like a book and said "Illuminations" on it, with 6 little "stamps" on it. The next day, at Animal Kingdom, a cast member told me that that pin is actually worth a lot of money. Maybe, maybe not, but it's worth alot to me, just knowing that everytime I watch that episode and see Art, I'll know that I met him in person and got a pin from him. So, we weren't able to do everything in Epcot that day, but that didn't bother me since I knew we would be back for supper a couple times that week.

We did Grand Fiesta twice that day. It was okay, but I still miss El Rio. We did Maelstrom twice, and in one of our waits in line for that ride, we actually met a poster from this message board. I was wearing one of my wdwmagic.com shirts and he happened to be standing right by us in line and he approached me about it. He said his screen name is some abbreviated version of "breaking news". We talked for a while in line, then he got on the boatload before our group. We waved as he sailed off, then he was still there waiting for the doors to open when we got off our boat. We sat down for the movie, and he walked out the door, and the last time we saw him was in the Norway gift shops. We had a nice visit in line and he seemed like a nice guy.

The new Nemo ride was okay, but being the purist that I tend to be, I wish they would have just left it the heck alone. I miss the Living Seas, but I guess all I can do is just roll with the changes.

We ate supper at Alfredo's in Italy. I wasn't impressed but the wife loved it. My food was good, mind you. I was just dissappointed in a couple of things. For one, they were out of the Calamari Appetizer, so that gave me a bad impression right off the bat. Secondly, I ordered the "wild boar" main course that was supposed to come with Italian Sausages (note the plural there). Now, in my mind, since wild boar is basically a wild pig, when I picture a wild boar main course in my mind, I'm thinking of a big pork roast thing with some italian sausages on the side. Imagine my surprise, when my plate comes out and all there is are two sausages. One bigger than the other. I asked if that was the wild boar and he said it was. I could only conclude that the bigger sausage was the wild boar and the smaller one was the Italian sausage. But, according to the menu, the wild boar was supposed to be accompanied by the plural of Italian Sausage, which means that if one of the sausages was the wild boar, then there should have been two sausages on the side, for a total of three. Either that, or they gave me the sausages and forgot to give me the wild boar. Either way, I did not leave with a favorable impression of this restaraunt, despite the fact that everything tasted fine. But I like the taste of catfish, too, but I would still be dissapointed if I ordered a New York Strip steak and instead got a plate of catfish. We stood in line forever at the bus station to go back to POR. I think everyone that visits Epcot must be from POR, because there were hardly any lines for the other resorts. However, we got to visiting with the couple in front of us, and chatted with them all the way back to property, although it was sometimes hard to hear with the squalling little demon girl a seat or two back, screaming bloody murder all the way from Epcot to Port Orleans. We got off at French Quarter, partly because I wanted to enjoy the pretty walk, and partly because I didn't want to have to listen to demon girl squalling in my ear any longer.

Well, this trip report thing is taking longer than I thought, as I am just now finishing my first full day there. I'm going to take a break and continue in a little while. See ya'll then!

We went to Animal Kingdom that day and I finally got to ride Expedition Everest. It was AWESOME! My wife rode it with me, then we went to DinoLand and did the three rides there. Then went to see Tough To Be a Bug. I traded my pin for the day, but I wasn't satisfied with the one I got, so I traded two more times until I got one that I was willing to keep. We did Festival of the Lion King for the first time ever. My wife had been wanting to see that show, so we made sure to see it. We had fastpasses for the safari, so we rode it, and I got a fastpass for later in the day for Expedition Everest. My wife didn't want to ride it again, so I just got a fastpass for me. We did both of those nature trail attractions, but I can't remember what the names are for sure. We did the train to the petting zoo area as well, but skipped the Nemo show. I waited in line for a half hour or 45 minutes for Kali River Rapids, while my wife sat in the shade and rested. She didn't want to go on it, plus her foot was bothering her with a blister and she didn't want to get the blister wet and have to walk around on it. When I got off the ride, it was time to do my Everest Ride, so I did EE. Then it was around 4:45 PM and we were done for the day at AK and it was time to head over to Epcot for our ADR at Garden Grill at 6 PM. We got to Epcot and had time to do Ellen's Energy Adventure, which we had also missed on Tuesday. Then we ate at Garden Grill and both enjoyed it.

Incidentally, on Tuesday at Epcot, as well as on Wednesday at AK, we stopped by one of those mobile ice cream cart things to use our snack allowance. It was the same kind of cart each time and both times, on our receipt, it said "Dixie Landings" on it. Naturally, I found it odd, as well as cool, that there is a little trace of Dixie Landings left, but I also found it odd that this was the only time that we ever saw the resort name printed on the receipt of anything that we purchased.

On Wednesday morning, I strolled over to the food court while my wife was getting ready. She hates it when I do that, but I reminded her that if I leave her in the room alone while she's getting ready, that means that I am not there to be nagging her to hurry up. I finally decided to buy one of those refillable souvenier mugs, thinking that I would surely get my money's worth eventually. Well, I will have to get my money's worth on something other than coffee, because their coffee was horrible, even when I loaded it with sugar!

Well, that's it for this portion. I'll be back in a little while to continue this more.

Thursday April 26

This was our Magic Kingdom day. It was also AM extra Magic hours at MK, and I had originally planned to do that. However, my wife gets worn out alot quicker than I do, with me being a "theme park commando" type. I am used to getting there at open and not leaving until the last cow dies. Okay, maybe a little earlier than that, but not before 10 PM. So I decided that I would forgo the EMH part, give her a chance to sleep a little longer and just get there at 9 AM, especially since I planned to be there until Wishes, and I had also planned to be there from 9 to 5 on Saturday. I didn't want to have to fight the crowds for the WDW buses on the way out, with such a long day planned to boot, so we took our van. I thought I was never going to find the ticket and transportation center. I had the worst time finding my way around that WDW highway system. I finally had to stop for directions after driving around in circles trying to get there, and still had trouble finding it. Finally, I just gave up and decided to park at Epcot and take the monorail over. I'm normally pretty good with directions, but I had a terrible time that week trying to find my way around those roads.

I had hoped to do a first time ride on the horse drawn trolleys up Main St USA, but another crowd beat us to it. I was standing there waiting at first for the trolley to come back down, but after seeing how slowly it moved up Main St and then how long it was taking to come back the other way, I finally figured heck with that; here I was standing at the entrance waiting on a stupid trolley while the crowds are all filing in and filling up lines for my rides. As we walked up Main Street, I saw that empty trolley just sitting there idle, making me glad that I decided not to wait for it.

I won't attempt to list the order in which I did various rides. But even being there from 9:15 or so until the end of Wishes, we still didn't get everything done. But we did do some firsts. Since everyone here swears by the Dole Whip, we tried a Dole Whip float. Unfortunately, it seemed like half the park had the same idea I had, as I had to wait behind about 5 or 6 people, all of whom were ordering two dole whip floats, just like I was. Like I said, I'm a theme park commando, and I'm impatient anyway and don't like being held up by people, so I was getting pretty agitated, thinking that there are rides to be rode and I'm standing here wasting my time waiting behind a bunch of shmucks who just need to clear out of my way. I finally had my turn in line and ordered our Dole Whip floats. It was very good, except for the brain freeze I got from apparently eating to fast. We also did Country Bear Jamboree for the first time, and probably the last time as well. I know alot of you swear by it and so does a lady at work who highly recommended it, but we thought it was just plain dumb and much ado about nothing. About all the good I saw in it was a cool, dark place to come in and sit out of the hot sun for a while, but that was about it. We ate lunch at Pecos Bills Cafe, as always.

We had 6 PM ADRs for Tony's Town Square. Sorry, Fizzle75, but having read your trip report, I have to disagree with your review of the joint. We both really enjoyed it. Unlike Alfredo's on Tuesday, they actually had Calamari in stock, so I got to have my Calamari, and I ordered the New York Strip Steak and loved it. My wife liked her food, too, but I can't remember what she had. I think she had the Pistachio Creme brulet for dessert, but I can't remember what mine was called. Some sort of cake type thingy with chocolat in it. It was really good, too. We watched Wishes, then booked it over to the monorail to head back to Epcot to get our van to drive back to the resort.

Friday April 27

This was our MGM Studios day. The wife was acting very grumpy and unhappy and I hated it that she was acting like she wasn't having a good time. Apparently she was very worn out from the day before (Magic Kingdom from 9 AM-10:30 PM) and needed a break from the parks. The first hour or so that we were at MGM she acted this way and finally, after talking to her and getting her to be honest (instead of just telling me what she thought I wanted to hear), she told me that she needed a break from the parks and that she would really like to switch Saturday and Sunday around. Saturday, we had planned to go to Magic Kingdom and Sunday we had planned to go to Church, then do some off property shopping and then head to Epcot that night for supper. She wanted to take Saturday off from the parks and do her shopping that day instead of Sunday, so I agreed. This seemed to put her in a much better mood and the day went along much more smoothly after that. I guess I learned something in church when one of the guest preachers said one time "A happy wife is a happy life".

Anyway, first thing upon entering the park, we headed right towards ToT and RnR. The wife refuses to do Tower of Terror, so I rode it by myself, and then we went to do RnR together. For the first time, we watched Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage. I thought that if we knock out all the shows as early as possible, it would be easier to concentrate on everything else the rest of the day without having to worry about making it back for this or that show. So after lunch at the ABC restaraunt, we did the Extreme Stunt Show. Then, we had just enough time to make it over to Indiana Jones and snatch up some of the last remaining seats for the show that was about to begin. Then after that, we had a few minutes to get to the sorcerer hat to see the High School Musical show that the wife wanted to see. So that knocked out all the shows by 1 PM, making it easier to concentrate on anything else we wanted to do without having to try to make a show at 3:30 or something.

At some point in the morning (and I don't remember what order this fell in with the other rides and shows) we did Star Tours and bought a Jedi Mickey for our baby back home, to add to the Mickey Ears and the "Day at the Magic Kingdom" story book we bought him on check in day.

When we began planning this trip months ago, I wrote out a list of places I wanted to eat and I had my wife do the same thing, without looking at my list. Any restaraunt that appeared on both lists made the final cut, and then I picked the remaining ones from her list and mine. Her list had included 50's Prime Time and the Sci Fi drive in Theater, but 50's Prime Time made the final list and the other didn't. However, she was getting more and more nervous about eating at 50's Prime Time after hearing about how "Mom" will call you on the carpet for not eating all your food, or slouching, etc. So sometime in the morning, as we walked by the Sci Fi restaraunt, she decided that she would rather eat there than 50's Prime Time, so we switched our ADR's and ate there that night instead. We both really enjoyed it and I had an awesome New YorK Strip Steak.

We had never done the Muppet Vision 3D show before, so we did that for the first time, as well as the Narnia walk through, which naturally wasn't there when we were there last in 2004.

The weather was great the whole trip and the only time we saw any rain was when we were in the first part of the backlot tour, where they were shooting the attack on the ship at sea. When the guy was doing his intro, we saw raindrops falling in the water, but it was all done by the time we were finished with the backlot tour. The sun was out the rest of the day. But we did notice that the tour had changed since the last time we were there. Last time, the tour took us through a little neighborhood of houses, but we noticed that part was missing this time.

Since my wife hates ToT, I used her ticket as well as mine to get two more fastpasses for that ride, to use from 6:40 to 7:40. I had already taken a second ride on it, so that would have given me 4 rides on it. However, I had planned to show my wife to the Fantasmic Stadium for her to stake out our seats, while I do my rides on ToT, and it was getting to be around 7:15 to 7:30 or so. And I didn't want to risk having it pack in while I was gone and my wife not being able to save me a seat, so I figured I may as well be happy with riding it twice and call it a day as far as the rides go. So I sat next to my wife and stayed there until Fantasmic began, and that show was great! We both really enjoyed it.

And when we got back to the room, we noticed that there was a can of pringles missing. We brought 3 cans along for the road trip and to eat in the room and this can was probably about 2/3 eaten. I had planned to eat the rest of it eventually, but it was gone. Apparently, the mousekeeper had a taste for pringles. Either that, or she was just to freakin stupid to notice that the can wasn't empty, and too lazy to check. But she should have been able to tell just by weight that it wasn't empty, but even if in doubt, it doesn't take much time or energy to lift the lid up and look...especially when the lid is clear plastic. And finally, if I want something thrown away, I would throw it in the trash can. You would think that if it's not in the trash, then it should be assummed that you don't want it thrown away.

Saturday April 28

Like I said, this was originally going to be our second Magic Kingdom day, until 5 PM or so, and then head off to 1900 Park Fare for supper. But per my wife's wishes, we switched it to Sunday and on went shopping today instead. She doesn't care about Downtown Disney, so we went to the Florida Mall in Orlando, where we have gone on previous trips. This was payback day for me dragging her around the parks all day, as she dragged me around the mall. Fortunately, it was only for 3 or 4 hours instead of a whole day, but she spent lots of money. We stopped at the Build a Bear shop and made a stuffed monkey for the baby. Then, the wife bought some jewelry and several shirts. I KNEW we should have stuck with Magic Kingdom that day!  Just kidding! LOL

After being paroled from the mall, I decided that would be a good day to check out some other resorts until it was time to eat. So on the way back, we stopped at the Animal Kingdom Lodge and had a little look around. It was cool in its own way, but neither of us were too impressed with it. Just not our thing I guess. At one time, I had that as one of my first choices for a delux resort should we ever stay at one. But I think I have changed my mind. Everyone has different tastes and Disney has various themes to accomodate those different tastes, but that whole African theme just isn't our taste. And, I couldn't help noticing that it was alot smaller than I had envisioned it after seeing it on Great Hotels with Samantha Brown. For some reason, when I see those places on TV, they look alot bigger than they really are. I noticed that same thing afterwards when we went to the Wilderness Lodge for a look around. It was smaller than it looked on TV as well...at least in my opinion. We both liked the look of this resort and would both consider staying there, although, as I said, I'd almost rather stay at POR from now on. Even though it's a moderate and these others are delux, I think I might like it better. After checking out Wilderness Lodge, we headed back to our hotel to grab the camera bag and do any other freshening up we needed to do before heading to the Grand Floridian for Supper at 1900 Park Fare.

The internet crashed on me last night as I was adding to Saturday's events. So I will finish up Saturday and then do Sunday and Monday.

We came back to the hotel Saturday after supper and noticed that a second partially eaten can of pringles was missing. At that point, I decided that I'm not going to tip mousekeeping anymore. A little late, seeing as how the next day was to be our last full day there anyway, and thus the last day that we would be leaving a tip. But I took the three bucks out of the envelope and put it back in my wallet, thinking that not only has she failed to earn her tip, but that she also owes us money for the two cans of pringles she stole from us.

We left a little early for supper so that we would have time to look around the GF a little, as well as monorail over to the Polynesian resort and look at it. We both liked the Poly, but I wasn't quite as thrilled about the GF as my wife is. She loves it and, while I like it okay, I'm not overly fond of it.

After supper, I had planned to play some mini-golf. I was having trouble deciding between Winter Summerland and Fantasia Gardens. However, that morning, I had traded pins in the gift shop and I traded for a Winter Summerland pin. So I figured we should play at the place I had a pin for. So Winter Summerland it was. However, I drove in circles forever trying to find that place. Like I said, I had a horrible time figuring out that road system there. I still think that the two people I asked sent me to Fantasia Gardens instead of Winter Summerland, because I kept ending up going by there. Finally, I was sick and tired of driving in circles and wasting time, so I decided heck with it and pulled into Fantasia, only to be told that they are busy and have long waits. Even more frustrated and angry, I got in the van again and finally managed to find Winter Summerland. However, I got there just in time to arrive right behind a party of five who also had just been to Fantasia and had come here because of the long waits. And, naturally, they were playing the winter course just like we were. Did they offer to let us play through? That's right...the answer is a big NO. The rules on the scorecard even say that there are to be no more than 4 in a party, but here is this party of 5 coming in and they lack the simple courtesy of letting us play through. So before beginning (while I'm still waiting for this group to finish the first hole), I go to the counter to switch to the summer course but I get there just in time to see another party of 4 or 5 going off on their merry way to....you guessed it...the Summer course. So now it's a choice of which party to be stuck behind all evening. I chose to stay in the winter course, but now that I think of it, I should have taken my chance with the summer course....maybe that group would have had the courtesy to let us play through.

We had a good time playing mini-golf, despite the frustrations of the evening. Except that I had planned to play both courses, but due to the hard time I had finding the place, as well as the dumb shmucks holding us up throughout the game, we only had time to play one course.

That's about it for Saturday. More to come later.

Great report, looking forward to the rest.
One thing about the Contemporary resort, the appeal to me about this resort isn't it's aestetics, I'll admit it is on the bland side as you say. What I love about this resort, (we stayed there on our honeymoon) was the convienience, (monorail resort) At the time the only parks there were MK and Epcot, we never had to take a bus. The other appeal for us was the spectaculiar view on the MK side of the tower from our room, which was the side we asked for. I haven't seen a view anywhere better at the other resorts. We're staying at the Poly and YC this summer because we've never been there before. I would recommend the Contemporary and would stay there again, maybe the next time we go.

Great report, looking forward to the rest.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The rest is coming soon.

Sorry that I'm so long winded, though. Methinks that is why there have only been two replies so far...it is so long no one wants to read it. I tend to get pretty wordy when I type. LOL

Sunday April 29

Like I said, the original plan was to go to church where we always go, the Free Methodist Church in Kissimmee. However, when we switched our Saturday and Sunday plans, I decided not to do church, since service is at 11 AM. That would get us out around noon, and back into the parks around 1 PM or so, which wouldn't be much time. So I was a bad boy and didn't do church that day. Instead, we went to the Magic Kingdom and got there early enough to see the opening festivities.

We got into the park and I wanted another shot at that horsedrawn trolley ride, but to no avail. Others had beat us to it, and it wasn't worth it enough to me, or to my wife, to wait for it to go up Main Street and back. So no trolley ride for us this trip.

We went straight to FantasyLand, since we didn't get to do several things there on Thursday. We did Snow White and Winnie the Pooh right off the bat. Then we hiked over to FrontierLand where we both did Thunder Mountain Railroad again, and then I did Splash Mountain again. My wife didn't want to get wet, so she sat that one out. We came back to FantasyLand and did Small World again and the Tea Cups again. We got Fastpasses for Space Mountain, and did Buzz Lightyear, which we didn't do on Thursday. We ate lunch at the Pinochio Village Haus, and then stood in line for Dumbo. It took so long that we got to Space Mountain 5 or 10 minutes late for our fastpass ride, but we got in anyway. We did the Monsters Inc Comedy Club for the very first time and then headed over to the Walt Disney Railroad. It was 1:30 or so by then and the wife was exhausted already. I don't see how one can be exhausted so early in the afternoon, but I guess everyone is different. We went back to the hotel so she could take a nap, while I went in the pool for the first time. It's been a long time since I've been swimming and I really enjoyed it. It gave me a new appreciation for things other than the theme parks and made me realize that on future trips, I should make more time to lounge around the resort instead of going from open to close at the theme parks. We had a supper ADR at Coral Reef at 6:10, so we left around 4 PM so we could have time to finish up a couple of things that were still undone at Epcot. We went to the Circle of Life in the Land, which we had never done before. It's tucked back there in that little corner and I never noticed it, I guess. It was then time to head to Coral Reef for supper and we each enjoyed our food. I was really itching for the New York Strip steak but I talked myself out of it. I had eaten Prime Rib at Chef Mickey's on Monday, there was some steak on our Garden Grill platter on Wednesday, I had a full blown strip steak on Thursday and Friday, and prime rib from the buffet on Saturday. So I thought I should give it a rest on the steak, so I had the blackened catfish, which was good.

After supper, we went to Canada and England, which we didn't get to on Tuesday. For the first time ever, we did O Canada, then we walked through the shops there and at England. Then, I wanted to do Maelstrom one more time before we leave, so I dragged the wife around World Showcase to Norway. On second thought, I think it would have been quicker to go the other direction, but oh well. We got to Norway only to find that Maelstrom was already closed, even though it wasn't 9 PM yet. Oh well, we did it twice on Tuesday. So then we got our picture taken on the way out, and purchased a copy at the camera center and then went back to the hotel. I jumped in the pool again for a while while the wife did some packing in the room.

I guess that's it for Sunday. Check out day and road trip home still to come.

I'm reading still, but I wanted to comment on a couple of things:

1) We have forever stayed in value resorts, and have always enjoyed them. But oh well, different strokes. We will be staying at POR for the first time since 1992, and most of us are looking forward to it, but we'll see.

2) Were you looking for the Transportation and Ticket Center or MK? If you were looking for the TTC, of course you won't find it ever. You go through the MK gates and that leads you to the TTC parking lot.

WDW has the easiest direction signs ever

Edit: Perhaps you were a little harsh in calling mousekeeping "too freakin' stupid" all for a couple of Pringle cans

You don't know what happened....and they're just Pringle cans :lookaroun

Anyway, glad you had a nice trip. We take weekend trips and can't fathom staying so long at WDW. My advice for next time is not to be such a theme park commando. You saw how it affected your wife. Take it easy, or go during a less busy time

Ya, we were looking for the TTC. I guess I forgot since the last time we were there in 2004. I was looking for signs for the TTC, which apparently is where I got messed up.

Maybe my comments toward Mousekeeping were a little harsh and, as you say, they were just two pringles cans. But it is the whole principle of the thing, I guess. It just kind of irked me. So on Sunday, we just left the "do not disturb" sign in the door all day so she wouldn't come in there and steal anything else from us. We figured we'd just make our own bed that day and keep the rest of our food intact.

And you're right about me being such a commando. That's one thought that I had this week as well. I approached the trip the same way I did when staying off property. When staying off property in Kissimmee, coming back to the hotel mid-day and then returning in the evening just wasn't doable. Once we're at the parks, we're there for the longhaul, until it's time to go home. However, the lesson I learned was that in staying on property, I don't need to do the parks that way. Especially when staying for a full week. I realized that in the future, I don't need to pick one park and stay there all day. Instead, I should do one park for the first part of the day, then come back for a swim in the pool and a nap for my wife, then go back later in the evening to another park. And I also figured next time, I can take in a water park and let my wife have a day to herself at the hotel, since she doesn't do water. There are several things to do differently next time, even though we had fun on this trip.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The rest is coming soon.

Sorry that I'm so long winded, though. Methinks that is why there have only been two replies so far...it is so long no one wants to read it. I tend to get pretty wordy when I type. LOL
I'm going to read it! It'll just take me a while. ;)

Seriously, thanks for sharing. I look forward to reading it!

Monday April 30

The dreaded day was finally here...the day that makes me want to never go on vacation again because it's just too depressing to have to come home. :(

I used our remaining snack credits at the food court and got some chocolat eclair things for the road. On the way out, I drove through Caribbean Beach and looked at it as we drove through. Looks pretty nice, but we didn't stop to go inside or anything. We got on the road for the long trip home. Of course, a trip to Florida just wouldn't be the same without traffic coming to a screeching halt in Georgia at least once. It happened in Southern Georgia due to an accident and, as always, they are doing road work on I-75. I think that in their spare time, they just decide to tear the road up and work on it for the fun of it, because they are always doing something on that road every friggin time we go through. Constantly changing the speed limit on us. It's 75, now it's down to 65, then it's down to 55, then back up to 65, then back down to 60, etc, etc. I'd almost want to fly down just to avoid that garbage every trip. Then, at Atlanta, I thought I would take the Atlanta bypass and avoid the rush hour traffic. Didn't work. I got around Atlanta, back onto 75 up around Marietta, GA, only for traffic to come to a screeching halt again. :brick: Never fails.

Drove as far as Clarksville, TN that night and pulled off to sleep at a Wingate Inn.

We got up Tuesday morning to complete the rest of the trip. Oh, and remember that traffic back up that I told you about on the road trip down the week before? The traffic backup that I saw in the Northbound lane as I was going south? Ya, well...it was still there and we got stuck in it. Who knows...maybe I'll get so used to traffic coming to a screeching halt on every road trip that I will actually miss it if I don't experience it sometime. Not. Wasted probably a good half hour to 45 minutes.

Then, to make the whole thing complete, I get home to find a huge mess in my garage. When I bought this house in 2002, it had really crappy, old cabinets in the kitchen. We re-did the kitchen and put brand new cabinets in. Not wanting to waste the old ones, I thought it would be nice to hang them in our detatched garage and put our old plates and such in them. Apparently, those cabinets decided to give out while we were gone. I walked into the garage and was greeted by the site of broken plates and jars laying all over the floor and there was that cabinet drooping down, where the frame came detatched from the backboard. So I got to spend some time today sweeping up busted glass and ceramic plates and tearing that cabinet the rest of the way down.

Oh well, like I said, as much bellyaching as I did in this report, I did have a good time. Sure, the trip wasn't perfect, and I learned some lessons which, hopefully, will lead to an even better trip next time for both me and my wife. But not bad for the first time on property.

That's it for the trip report, although I will be back later with some closing thoughts.

We love Wilderness Lodge, we stay there every year.

Sounds like all in all you had a great trip. We stopped doing the commando thing years ago. Now we save up for one big 10 day vacation each year. I like having by afternoon pool time!

Some closing thoughts

My wife was concerned that she would miss the baby so much that she would be crying on the way down and during the vacation. However, she actually did very well. Sure, she missed him alot, but she never cried, like she thought she would. Lots of things there reminded her of our boy, and there were times that she said she started to tear up, but she never cried that I know of.

Like I said, I think I have begun to realize that there is so much more for us to do at WDW than just hit the parks from dawn until dusk. My wife doesn't have near the energy that I do and she gets worn out very quickly. Previously, we had to make a day of it, because it is just too impractical to drive back to Kissimmee to our motel and then go back later. However, with staying on property, it is much more practical and convenient to do so and I do regret that I learned that too late in the game to have alot of impact on this trip. I have begun to rethink the way we do the parks. Rather than pick one park and do it all day and all evening, I think on future trips, I will find which parks have the AM extra magic hours and hit that park until noon or 1 or 2 PM and then go back to the room for pool time (and nap time for my wife) and then go back out in the evening to another park. That would give my wife a chance to relax and get a nap and be ready to go that evening, instead of me feeling like I'm dragging a zombie around the theme park all day. I've come to realize that if I don't think she's having fun, it's harder for me to have fun as well. After all, the whole idea is for us both to have fun together and if she's not have a good time, then I don't enjoy myself as much either. Plus, I am paying for that resort and part of what I am paying for is the pool and the scenery of the resort, so I want to have more time to enjoy that part of the trip instead of being in theme park commando mode the whole time. I would like to have more time for mini-golf on future trips, as well as a water park, possibly some parasailing and possibly some horseback riding. So I think from now on, I'll slow things down a bit so we can both enjoy it that much more.

On this trip, we invested in 10 day parkhopper passes with No Expiration. Since we switched our days Saturday and Sunday, that means we didn't enter the parks at all on Saturday, while we had already planned to do so on Sunday. So, my original plan was to use 6 of the 10 days and come home with 4 unused days for a future trip. However, we now have 5 unused days to use next time. If I figured it right, the 10 day parkhopper with no expiration for two of us cost over 800 bucks. That means that if we go next year, our total should be 800 bucks cheaper than it was this year since we won't be spending the amount of money on tickets that we spent this time around. Originally, I thought I would take advantage of that savings by booking a deluxe resort, but I think we would prefer to do POR again and either bring the baby along next year and stay longer (since the reason we only stayed a week this time was because the wife didn't want to be away from him longer than a week), or leave him at home again and just enjoy staying for alot cheaper than we did this year.

Again, we had alot of fun on this trip, but as always, there is definitely room for improvement. I have just listed ways to make future trips more relaxing and enjoyable for myself and my wife and hopefully I will stick with that next time.

I'm already looking into when Easter is next year, since we like to go in April, and the seasons depend largely on when Easter falls. Someone said Easter is March 23 next year, which works out perfectly, so that we can go earlier in April and have our anniversary fall during our vacation, which is what we prefer. Hopefully I can book a tentative date here pretty soon and hope that things work out such that we can go again next year.

By the way, can I book the dining plan without buying tickets?

Edit for Saturday April 28

Just a small addition to my report for Saturday; after supper and before playing mini-golf, we had a carraige ride scheduled for 8 PM around the Port Orleans grounds. My wife was really excited about doing this and we both enjoyed it. After the carraige ride, our mini-golf woes began.

Nice report..I do agree on the mousekeeping thing..very harsh and it was just chips and you really do not know if they thought it was trash or not.

next time...take it easier and then maybe you would be able to relax a bit more..your wife also.

One question right now..Why would you not take the baby?

One question right now..Why would you not take the baby?

We just didn't think we could have much fun down there dragging a baby around that can't do anything. He just turned a year old today, so he's too little for most of the rides and would have to be in bed earlier, so we wouldn't be able to be out late for Wishes, Fantasmic, etc. We figured at that age, a baby at WDW is more of a burden than anything. He's too little to appreciate it or remember it and he's too little for us to be able to take him on many of the rides and enjoy it. Sure they have the rider switch thing, but what fun is that to constantly have to ride rides alone? And after putting up with some of the fussing, squaling little demons that we saw down there, we really don't like the idea of that being our kid acting that way in public.

However, I was more willing to take him than my wife was. My philosophy was that, if it came down to either taking him with us or not going at all, I would rather take him with us. But my wife really didn't want any part of it, especially with having him in a car seat for that long drive.

If we do end up planning for sure to go next year, we will have to think of all the pros and cons of taking the baby (who will be almost two) vs leaving him home again.

On the "pro" side, is the fact that I realize the benefits of slowing things down and not being a theme park commando. If we do 4 or 5 hours at the park and then come back to the room for a nap, and then go back out later, that would work much better with having a baby along. Plus, if he is with us, then hopefully we can stay longer since the wife won't be in a hurry to get back home to see him.

On the other hand, the fact still remains that we will be there with an almost two year old and we have no idea how he would act down there. And since he can't ride most of the rides, he would still tend to drag us down.

But on the other hand (gee how many hands do I have), even if he "drags us down" from the rides, there is still the fact that we are at WDW with our whole family unit and experiencing it from a new angle, even if we can't do all the rides. So that certainly would count for something.
