Watched the ride through video and I am disgusted. They have a beautiful pyramid and scenery and THAT'S the best they could come up with?? I wrote a letter to Disney, not that it matters much to them, but I just felt I had to say or do something.... If I were Mexican, I would be HIGHLY insulted by this ride...this is how Disney chose to portray Mexico? Oh gee, lets go into this ancient Mayan pyramid and see....CARTOONS????????? Donald Duck??????? Why Bother????????? What on Earth were they thinking??? Horrible, pathetic, sad. What is happening to Epcot? Why do they only want to attract thrill seekers and preschoolers now? It's really sad to see this happening.

Because the people running alongside your boat hawking souvenirs was so much better, right?

I watched the video and thought it was nice. I'll reserve my final judgment until I actually go on the attraction this summer.

^^ That's how it really IS in the tourist towns (not cities) of Mexico.

It's not PC, but real life isn't, either. :)

Well aware that does exist, but my point is that I don't expect an un-Disneyfied/kitchy/touristy look at much of anything while I'm there. If I want that, I'll go to a museum.

Of course, that being said, I'd be really peeved if they tossed Mickey in the middle of China's terra cotta warriors. I love that exhibit.

I dont know, I can see what you are saying in some ways, but it still looks like a decent substitute for el rio. I cant wait until I get back down there to see it myself.

But that's where they plan to put the rest of Mickey's body parts!

p.s. I like the new attraction.

You based your opinion on a video? There's your problem right there. I wouldn't judge anything until you experience it for yourself.....

I'm curious how this ruins Mexico, since the OP used that word.

The original ride wasn't exactly a museum of Mexican history. Even if you think this is shlocky, stereotypical, etc., my question is what were you comparing it to in the first place?

I'm not a thrill seeker or a preschooler (hopefully the second is readily apparent), and I'm looking forward to riding this when I get a chance.

History Lesson:

Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros were actually animated, happy propaganda films whose sole purposes were to improve American relations with Central and South America. Donald, Jose, and Panchito were, in effect, American goodwill ambassadors to our southern friends; and I think they did a better job than any politician. :D

Thus, putting the Three Cabelleros into Mexico is simply an extension of what they've already done. I welcome the change.

The attraction is meant to provide a humurous interpretation of a film incorporating a Mexican theme. After all, aren't attractions meant to entertain?

The ride was outdated and not well attended. It needed updating in a bad way.

But I can't believe you would write a letter after only watching a video. You must be one of those people.

I enjoy how you are complaining about storytelling using characters. What, exactly, do you think a Disney animated movie is? Its a story, usually one with a pretty profound moral, told with characters. Oh. What do you think a big portion of existing attractions in Disney parks are? The exact same thing. Would you rather have them treat everything like the Wonders of Life pavilion and let it all go so stale that by the time they close it, all the attractions are outdated and no one really cares if it is open or closed? Of course not.

Soarin is a thrill attraction now? Or is it for preschoolers? The Seas is a perfect mix of education and characters. There aren't that many people that don't like what they did with The Seas.

There are TWO thrill attractions in Epcot, which is less than every other park. Now, as far as "preschoolers", well, the pavilions have been around for a long time, besides Space, so I can't see that argument.

I think you are overreacting because of change, as many people on this site do, without even thinking about what you are saying.

I haven't been on the refurbished River of Time yet, and it will be another seven-plus months until I can experience it firsthand. I'll reserve my judgment on how great or terrible the changes made to the attraction until I actually experience it.
However, I can say that the old ride was definitely lacking. It featured vacation videos, projected at less than stellar quality. It just felt tacky. Did I enjoy the experience, yes, but it was far from the perfect attraction.
It wasn't a classic by any means, and rather than letting it slowly die, becoming vacant space, it can now become viable again. If it makes it truly more viable, then it can only be a positive change.

Epcot's purpose is also to educate...

While there still is some educational value in Gran Fiesta, not EVERY attraction in a park has to fit ALL of the purposes of a park. For instance, what does the Tower of Terror have to do with "a working movie studio". Nothing. But "the Hollywood that never was and always will be"? A lot.

To say that it ruined Mexico would imply that El Rio was a masterpiece that has been removed. Removed it was, a masterpiece it was not. That being said, I'm not a fan of Gran Fiesta. While I'm glad to see most of the physical set pieces intact, I'm disappointed with the rest of the presentation. I was having a difficult time figuring out which screen I was supposed to watch and in what order. I'd look at one screen, internalize what's going on with the animation, look at another screen, and the action on that one was over, too. By the time the action on the latter screen started again, the boat had moved on to the next screen. Plus I think that the animation at the end was a cop-out. The ride would've greatly benefited from animatronics at that point. Keep in mind that I'm not overly critical of the ride/attraction offerings at the World... heck, I even like SGE.

agreed, and really the original PO should not be writing a letter etc until they have actually been there and been on the ride, you cant gripe to Disney just from seeing a online video. That would be pretty shallow and quick to jump. Go there first and ride it for goodness sakes, then if unhappy write a letter.

From what I have seen I love the new lighting effects with the glowing candles etc in the beginning scenes and the new jungle sounds as the boats glide by san angel inn. It all has much more life and yet a lot of new "charm" I thought anyway. Except maybe with that last concert screen video at the end, no one seems too thrilled about that but hey it could have been worse, those creepy puppets could have been there still going round and round and ending up yelling for Donald, "oh Donald come and let us free after 25 years of going round and round this thing we want off!" :D

I didn't say that Epcot's only purpose is to educate. I was merely adding to WDWMonorail's comment that attractions entertain. My point is that in addition to entertaining Guests, Epcot's attractions also educate. The extent to which the attractions are educational varies from area to area.

In case you didn't read my previous posts, I like Gran Fiesta Tour.

EDIT: Oh, it took me too long to respond to Champion. Forget it. :)

I know it has been a loooooong time since I was at Epcot, however, are not the various countries sponsored by that country, and I would make a guess that they do have a say in what attraction is presented in their area. I am sure that most of this ride was presented to them in some format prior to installation. If the sponsor of the attraction felt "HIGHLY insulted by this ride..." then it would not be installed as is.
