Tornado's near Disney area!

I was wondering the same thing. I always worry about FW when I hear these things, all those people in their campers and tents and the cabins, which are really just mobile homes. Sounds like a terrible storm with more coming from the looks of the radar and weather reports. :(

The story has hit the major news networks (CNN/MSNBC) and no mention of Disney yet. It's still a developing story so maybe we'll hear something soon. Scary, though. They're talking about multiple fatalities. :(

Because of the number of threads, I'm going to move them all to Weather. (Which is where I looked first to see if anyone had posted)

Edited to add...the latest death toll is 14. This was one deadly storm. Damn I hate tornados; at least I can prepare for a hurricane or stay home in a blizzard, or move to higher ground if a flood is expected (unless a dam breaks) but all you can do is "watch" for a tornado. And they seem to prefer to come during the night around here, so you can't even do that.

I feel so sorry for all the families who lost loved ones, and the others who lost their homes and all their possesions.

This is very sad indeed.

I feel sorry sorry for all the people who lost their homes.

When will we learn that Mobile Homes and Florida don't mix to well.

((HUGS)) Hope you can get through soon.
Thanks.
My mom is probably working at the hospital - she's a volunteer and usually does a double shift on Fridays. My brother's job takes him all over the state, so he could be anywhere today. I'll check again with them in an hour.

Thanks for the link Mad. My mom and brother and nephew and his family live in Lake County, but south of where it hit. I haven't been able to reach them this morning at all....

There are widespread power outages, and radio/cell phone towers are down, so they might not be able to call out or get calls in. Try not to worry. (easy for me to say, but please try)

Hmmm...perhaps you should put a sticky in the news forum then. People like myself may not be aware of a "weather" forum, which is just going to lead to more postings (like the one of mine you so kindly moved and locked here LOL).

It would avoid confusion. The news reports are not saying Disney but many of the maps they are showing make it look like the storm went right through - and as I said, I'm sure more people will be going to the news forum to find out about this than the "weather" forum. I honestly never even heard of that forum before my thread got moved here.

Geez, it was really surprising to hear about this today. We have close friends visiting in the Lake County area; my wife is trying to contact them.

Mom, is this kind of weather common down there this early in the year? It seems unusual to hear about this in February.

I recall other early spring tornados. There was one that hit just west of WDW (Tavares) over a decade ago which had even more damage and loss of life. I believe it was in early March or late February. The one that hit our neighborhood was in May.

Ii has more to do with the up and down weather we've had the past month; 76 degrees right now, but the high for tomorrow is only predicted to be in the mid 50s. We had a hard freeze a few days ago, but temperatures in the 80s before then. This is more common in later winter/early spring. (At least to my recollection)

I just checked the map, and Tavares is fairly close to Lady Lakes, which is the area that was hit hardest this time. The tornado I was thinking of happened on Feb 22nd, 1998. Also, this area is apparently VERY prone to tornados; the link said 99% more likely than average. (FWIW)

Ditto, I will take a Hurricane anyday over a Tornado. My Dh is a weatherman, so I have been well trained on what to do in all types of bad weather. We lived in Ohio for four years and never saw a Tornado but 2 weeks after we moved, one went down our street.

My prayers for all who lost their lives and homes.

Have a great day.

Those storms made work interesting this morning. For those that don't really know me, I work in the Regional Traffic Management Center(RTMC) which monitors traffic cameras along I-4 and other major roadways in Central Florida, as well as handling the 511 Traffic Information system. When I walked in this morning, about a mile or so of I-4 was shut down in both directions in Volusia County because of four semis that were involved in accidents. Also, our cameras, signs and traffic detectors East of the Lake Mary area were totally out. There was another car later in the morning that had to be fished out of a retention pond. Overall, it was just total chaos. Much quieter where I am now, though.
