Retro Epcot logo on wand

On Yesterland there is an article by Werner Weiss about the Epcot wand. He states: "The number 2000 was replaced by Epcot in a weird font that didn’t look like any Epcot logo, past or present"

This is not correct. The logo was used for a short time in the early 90's (I think not long before Epcot 94 and Epcot 95). I have the packaging from a World Showcase decorative plate that has the logo on it. Why they thought that using an old logo would make the project any more acceptable is beyond me. But I've always thought it interesting that they dug back in time and
resurrected an old logo for this one project.

You know it was back then and probably the later 90's b/c i cant remember back that far, but I do rember watching a show (I dont remember which one) but the anounch would be like "Welcome to Epcot Center!" actually i think it was Food Rocks... always missed

That is pretty close. I wonder if that was specifically what the designers took the font from, though. In my opinion, there could have been a much better font choice for the already cruddy looking wand.

I'll accept the fact that they felt theyneeded to add Mickey's hand to associate the park more with Disney, but even then, the font is kind of ugly.

I got really excited about someone with the idea of removing Mickey's hand and the wand's star, being replaced by the old Epcot circles logo. Still tacky, but I would have to defend it!

My thoughts exactly...

It is interesting...that while I have seen this particular logo on various t-shirts for sale on eBay, I had never connected it with the "Kolibri"- or "Script MT Bold"-style wand font... Oops!

Boy am I dumb...

I have a 1990 T-Shirt with the logo on it. I never made the connection. Maybe it`s because I tried to ignore the wand :D

From late `92 into `93 the logos were back to the Florida Project oversized 'D' logo, then the thick, symmetrical logo of Epcot `94.

Oh the horrors... somebody alert the authorities. It's a character invasion. How dare they include a character on an Epcot t-shirt?!?! And from 1990.

 I feel better now. :)

I absolutely love the old oversized D Walt Disney World logos. I wish we could bring that back as well.
Me too. I loved how for Disneyland's 50th, they came out with a lot of retro merch. I hope they do that for Epcot's celebration too, it would be awesome!

EPCOT logo

Regardless of how the EPCOT font is, i think if they want to try something retro then they should take down that tacky hand , wand and logo off of the ball and return it to the way it was designed.

Although some I deas looked great at first such as: decorating the castle as a birthday cake 10 years ago and putting the giant sorcorers hat over at MGM, after a while the i dea got old .

Bottom line is all of the Icons at each park should be left alone. next thing you will see is something tacky on top of the tree of life at DAK.

I hope the new braintrust at Disney has gotten out of the Eisner mindset and will return to Ideas that Walt himself would be proud. (even though he would be still sick to his stomach at how his origional EPCOT dream turned out.
Oh well ....guess you can`t have everything.

have a great day.....M
