Hey, guys. I spent the weekend about two hours north of here, at Pinery Provincial Park.

Ontario, for those following along. :lookaroun

Anyway, yesterday was Thanksgiving in Canada, so therefore, we went camping. Why? To be truthful, I don’t know. I’ve never cared much for camping, but I’ve tried to make the most of it.

Anyway, without further ado, I present a mostly pointless montage of photos!

To start, I present to you, some random sand hill!

The Ausable River… THROUGH THE BRIDGE!

IMG_1588.jpg

Almost there…

IMG_1590.jpg

And there was much rejoicing.

IMG_1656.jpg

The weather looks good… even if it doesn’t exactly show the weekend.

IMG_1596.jpg

The park store would be a lot more useful if it were open…

IMG_1600.jpg

My Through the Trees shot didn’t turn out that well. (My FIRST one, at least. [Then again, most of these pics will be through the trees. {Is this enough brackets for you?}])

So, because two out of four members of our family don’t care much for tent camping, we stay in what are basically eight-sided tents, called Yurts. I neglected to take a pic of the inside, but it has two bunk beds, a table, heating/air conditioning, etc.

Yeah, I know… I’m really roughing it out here.

IMG_1606.jpg

Already have our chairs set up…

IMG_1607.jpg

I forgot to mention that the Yurt also comes with a deck, umbrella and propane grill. (Yep… really roughing it.)

IMG_1609.jpg

GAH!

IMG_1610.jpg

Due to my superb picture-taking skills and lack thereof, this squirrel somehow turned out to look like the big black cloud monster thingy in LOST. :lookaroun

IMG_1612.jpg

Here’s just a bit of the lights we had up. In total, we had 2 strings of standard orange lights around the Yurt, 2 pumpkin light strings around the deck (plus a string of Mickey pumpkins), and 4 of those skulls.

:lookaroun

The next day, we decided to go fishing on one of the road bridge dock things they have. This was probably the best shot of the whole trip.

IMG_1618.jpg

…We’re gonna need a bigger boat.

IMG_1620.jpg

Since there’s no coasters around here, I made do with what I had. Exclusive Shot! LIFT HILL!

IMG_1621.jpg

These next two pics are of what I thought were the most impressive fall colours thus far.

IMG_1622.jpg

IMG_1623_2.jpg

The first semi-decent rodent shot. (Happy Squirrel Awareness Month!)

IMG_1627.jpg

Aah, that’s better.

IMG_1628.jpg

I bribed him with peanuts.

IMG_1630.jpg

But he came out on his own free will. Hogging the natural limelight, I guess. :lookaroun

Some random toad I found in a field.

IMG_1636.jpg

One of my friends happened to be up there the same weekend, so we were going to go kayaking. Unfortunately, like so much else at the park last weekend, the kayaks were already being stored for the season. Dang.

At least I got a couple more river shots.

Dot Shot #1

IMG_1640.jpg

Apparently my friend and I vented our anger by burning something profusely. (Excerpt from “Connor’s Anarchist’s Cookbook, Vol. 3 :lookaroun )

IMG_1641.jpg

IMG_1642.jpg

Chip ‘n Dale (Oddly enough, these were two different chipmunks.)

On Sunday, we decided to do some stuff outside the park.

Just in case you ever come up around here, Dot… this is the best place for ice cream. Even has discounts in the park info guide.

IMG_1657.jpg

Next we went to a fine shopping establishment…

IMG_1667.jpg

Well, at least I found some trace of amusement park around here! (Though, like that fireworks Ferris wheel in Tennessee, I wouldn’t trust this thing with my life.)

IMG_1658.jpg

OMG! Hidden Mickey!

IMG_1659.jpg

…And, as usual, I tried making an artsy shot, even out of something like this. Apparently this ride looks perfectly safe once you go blind.

IMG_1660.jpg

Some random Canadian fighter plane. (Note: The preceding was an oxymoron.)

IMG_1661.jpg

The next two pictures are self-explanatory, IMO…

Once I was actually in the market, I finally found a coaster!

…Sort of.

IMG_1665.jpg

Oh, well. At least there’s an actual bumper car.

Bench: The Ride

IMG_1669.jpg

It’s Herbie!

IMG_1670.jpg

After the market of fleas, we decided to head about an hour north of the Pinery, to a quaint little town called Bayfield. I honestly wouldn’t mind living there, provided I had insane amounts of cash.

Just passing through for now…

IMG_1671.jpg

Lake Huron almost looks decent from over here… surprising, considering (pollution-central) Sarnia is an hour west.

IMG_1676.jpg

At first, I just went for a little stroll around the park…

IMG_1677.jpg

But then I managed to find a World War memorial. So simple, so modest… but nothing compared to what all soldiers deserve.

Lest we forget

Most shops in Bayfield look like this… really, it’s a nice little town. Pet owners note: every shop here welcomes animals of any kind! They even had free Tootsie Pops at one place, for human and animal alike.

IMG_1682.jpg

Rolo ice cream with peanut butter cups… who could honestly pass this up?

IMG_1683.jpg

Back in Grand Bend, they had a new beach complex, so I had a look-see.

IMG_1686.jpg

Looking up towards Bayfield/Goderich (/north, for those of you who are still clueless).

IMG_1684.jpg

And looking up Main Street. This town is a popular spot for car buffs. Not a minute goes by that some old roadster doesn’t thunder down Main Street and back up again. The Grand Bend Motorplex is about 5 miles away, so that has a lot to do with it.

IMG_1685.jpg

Strange… no pics for the rest of the day. Oh well.

On Monday, we decided to try our luck fishing at a different location. No such luck fish-wise, but I did get another good river shot.

IMG_1688.jpg

Pinery is famous for two things: its Oak Savannah/Carolinian forest, and its sand dune beaches.

IMG_1689.jpg

Ooh, aah.

IMG_1690.jpg

The dunes (kind of).

They’re building a raft to get off the island.

IMG_1692.jpg

It certainly would explain the signal fire. :lookaroun

IMG_1693.jpg

The last thing on our impromptu agenda was the visitor centre.

IMG_1697.jpg

…Well, never mind that, then.

IMG_1698.jpg

That’s it for the photos, and this random trip report. Stay tuned next weekend for an update from Cedar Point amusement park… in 50 degree weather. That should be fun.

I wish the photo of the black squirrel had come out better, but the cute chipmunks made up for it.

I liked the yurts, also. I'm not much of a camper, but I could spend some time in one of those. The Daughter could sleep under the stars, if she wanted to rough it.
