Backlot Expansion and Overhaul - (And so can you!)

So here's my three phase idea for Backlands Enhancements-Even though it's already chock full of great stuff, oh how you whine...Alright, let's do some enhancementacating! First off, Backlot Tour isn't going anywhere. Don't...Don't freak out. Just settle down...Be calm. Backlot Tour isn't going anywhere because A: It's still a Studios classic, B: It still gives a good look at Movie Production, C: More rides the better. Now knowing that, let's move to Soundstage 1, where the real work will be done.

Only three things are getting the Axe in my plan. First thing, Backlot Tour's entrance, is outta' here. But we're gonna' be saving the Catastrophe Canyon sign on the top. We're packing that away for later. Rest of the building is gone. Oh, I see what you'redoing there! You're about to start tearing down the Splash Fountain and Restaraunt aren't you? No...Just ease off the bulldozer. This is a surgical expansion.

Alright, now that building is gone we're going to be-very carefully-removing the old Home Improvement/Henson Workshop, as well as all the etc. around Soundstage one. Ok, now we lie foundation for the Main Attraction, Monsters Inc. Ride & Go Seek!

But Servo, you ask...I wanna'coaster! No! No Coaster for you! Why? Here's why, Coasters, even small ones, to be relatively thrilling, need to have some speed. But rides that go fast have a nasty way of chewing up land-fast. And for all the thrill-You don't get much show. I mean, Everest takes up the most room of pretty much every WDW attraction, yet people still moan that's it's short or cheap. So, no Coaster. We'll be using the ride system and story of Tokyo's Ride and go Seek, albeit altered and tailored for the space.

Around where the Coke Stand and Backlot Tour building stands now will be a queue building-smack dab right at the end of Pixar Place. It isn't the Monsters Inc. building front we all know, it's a new place: A Visitor Entrance. On top of the building is a forced perspective of one of the door hangers. To our right, is soundstage 1, modified to look like another door hanger.

Let's go to the map!

picture.php

Okay, now you can see what I mean. The brown color represents new facades, the big "i" shape is where the entrance is. The circle is a forced perspective dome (Think Countdown's building) and the other shape is the forced perspective hanger.

The Tan represents the solid shape of the new building. Black divides the show rooms, and the red represents track layout. *Use the cars parked at the top left to get a sense of scale. A car is roughly the same size as our ride trains. the small S represents the track switches.

Let's walk through the scenes!

1-Load

2-Transition

3-Introduction

4-Power Turned off

5-Locker Room

6-Hallway

7-Celia and reception

8-Hallway 2

9-Monster Main Street (Side A)

10-Monster Main Street (Side B)

11- Harryhausen's

12-Alleyway

13-Door Hanger

14-Doors Galore

15-Compactor

16-Power Returns

17-Boo Sent Home

18-Return

19-Roz

20- Unload/Retail

As you can see, the big black space is soundstage 1-it gets the most room because it contains the nearly three story show sets of the night street. Everything is on a slightly smaller scale than Tokyo's, but it's generally the same ride but a more straightened and less curvy than Tokyo's roundish layout.

So now we've got another great new ride-But where oh where do people go? It's a dead end! Here's the hard part...At first a temporary roadway cutting backstage will dump out onto Streets of America by the Public Library building.

Ideally, phase 2 would forest this street and merge with HISTK to form a mini-version of A Bug's Land from DCA. But since there's alot of utilities back there, it may be too much. Still, a minor theme installation and trees will make a good new pathway.

Which leaves the Backlot Tour. As you can see, The Splash Fountain is now leading towards a solid building wall. But if one stands near the DVC stand-One can see a punch through will lead to the old queue and pre-show area. The pre-show ramp and queue will be enclosed in this overhaul, and finally, the old goosebumps building will be refitted as "Backlot Plaza". The restaurant remains (With a nice view of Forced Perspective Monsters Inc. Building.) as well as AFI, the restrooms, and the Splash Fountain is now a courtyard for the entrance to the new Backlot Tour. The Catastrophe Canyon sign gets placed on the roof of the loading dock on the other side of the store, along with new "Backlot Plaza" signage.

As part of this overhaul, the water tank may also be enclosed and replaced with a pre show highlighting live action merging with computer special effects. (I left this part iffy since some people might prefer the Water Tank. What do you think?)

See? Not too much work, eh?

Let's get this built Disney!

Ahhh, get rid of the water tank, effects have come on so far recently, we need something new...

And maybe you could run it, but could you stand Rasulo?

Fantastic Idea! I love it.
I would certainly replace or at the very least update the water show though. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think many people really remember "Pearl Harbor". At a minimum, it should probably be updated to revolve around the PotC franchise, but I think the live action/computer effects idea would make a great replacement.

Great stuff but is all the squezzing in nessasary? DHS has the most room for expansion than any other park?

Not true, in fact the complete opposite. Studios is squeezed in between World Drive, the parking lot, and Epcot and the surrounding resorts. I've often thought about developing outside the berm, and over the car entrance to the swamplands to the south of Studios, there is plenty of room, but there aren't many big ticket movies worth buying into a multi-million dollar expansion to house an attraction in.

Plus right to the left of soundstage 1 is a manufacturing warehouse and costuming- Two important buildings for all of Walt Disney World, and might as well stay along the Backlot Tour route.

(Yes, you have still been seeing important things on the Backlot Tour! )

Thanks everybody!

Why can't they use the massive piece of L shaped land that starts off behind Lights Motors Action and wraps around all the way behind the parking lot?

See that long grey stripe along LMA on the southern side? That's the second Studios parking entrance, the main one. A little too the right of that is a water system. Both would have to be rerouted at great expsense and greatly lengthen the time to get around to the parking lot. I said this could be done, but there's no additions at this time that'd fit the park and be worth the bill. In short, it's "slightly more complicated than that."

I love you, your ideas, your love for MST3K, random Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego TV show references, and this idea.

Only question, what about the comparisons that this is in effect similar to the TSMM next door? While it'll have 3D sets and such, it's not secret that TSMM was created as a branch off of that ride idea (similar to TT and Rocket Rods.)

Athankyou kindly.

Ride and Go Seek doesn't have screens, all animatronics. Plus while they did start with the same ride system- They ended up making a completely different one altogether. Whereas Test Track and Rocket Rods actually share the exact ride system. Plus I think a Dark Ride is always welcome.

Pretty much perfect. In all ways. Evar. So yeah. But what about enhancements to the tour to give it some more UMPH instead of the boringness we have?

Got ya it does look like DHS has more room to expand than any oter park but your ideas are great
