So, Mr. Smith wanted a thread in which we could all comment on the POTC Franchise and it's implications in the ride in it's refurb.:lol:

My thoughts? It's a great refurb especially for the Jack AA's. The others could have gotten a bit more attention, but I think Jack and his new scenes are good.

As for the DJ effect, it's a good one, but in the wrong spot. Maybe the end of the ride? But besides that, WOW. Good tech, amazing imagery and WDI Innovation. *lovesit*

I really don't have much of a problem with Jack Sparrow. But yes, the audio needs some work (a LOT of work). Also, they seriously need to get that Davy Jones effect working properly; its great when it works like its supposed to, and I think it helps liven up an otherwise dead area of the ride.

I wish I could have seen Davy Jones. He was broken when I was
there, and the beginning of the ride was not good as a result.

That having been said, I'm a fan of adding the film stuff to the
ride, but only because the quality of the original film was good enough
to warrant it. I was so surprised when I saw the film that they
had managed to craft something TRUE to the spirit of the ride.

In that context, I'm all for it. The Jack AA's are great as well.

OH, yes---re: the above post. I think that the audio was a mess when
we were there. Could hardly hear the song, the whole ride seemed quiet
and jumbled. I don't know if that's "broken audio" or "botched implementation
and conception".

Did you ever experience the Talking Skull? Simple, erie and epic. DJ upped him, but loss the subtlety of the moment.

DJ is epic. A WDI Innovation as I said...We haven't seen something like that in a while, save for the grid in SSE, or Leota in HM.


I do think that they should have made Jack a little more subtle (see a pattern!?) as a nod to the movie, not the movie facilitating the ride.

Main problem? AUDIO!!

The refurb was actually half decent. The new additions, while feeling a bit out of place, were impressive and unique to say the least. The Davy Jones effect startled me when I first experienced it. The only compaint I had was that the refurb focused only on the new scenes rather than updating the existing ones.

The battle after the waterfall is done much better with air cannons seemingly closer to the boats. You can't really tell that it's Barbosa at the helm of the ship, but I think that has more to do with how far away he is.

What I disliked:
THE AUDIO - This is where the refurb really failed. They added the mist screen effect but Davy Jones is hard to understand. They didn't fix the audio problems with the theme song when the village is burning making it tough to understand the song lyrics. Jack Sparrow is tough to understand in the final room as well.
The final room - In addition to Jack being difficult to understand, I don't like that you can't see him until you're right up next to him.
The removal of the skull and crossbones prior to the drop. I don't understand why this was removed. It was a small and effective warning prior to the drop.

How much of Haunted Mansion's budgets was spent on speakers? To me, the problems I have should be fixable in a much shorter refurb.

When I rode PotC in February, the only evidence of a refurb were the additions of Jack. The attraction is in terrible, absolutely terrible shape. AA's don't work, things are missing, and the sound is spotty. This is unacceptable for an attraction that was refurbed just a few years ago.

As to the purpose of this thread. I don't have a problem with adding Jack to the attraction. His AA's are incredible. I also don't have a problem with adding Barbossa or Davy Jones. Both work very well. I just have a problem with the terrible refurb that accompanied them.

Nothing short of shutting it down for 2 years and extending the ride to a proper length will ever make it better than Mansion.

-I hate the linear storyline. Before the ride was about your adventure with pirates. Now it's "Where's Jack?"
-Barbossa's AA. Eh.

The Ugly
-No upgraded audio
-No additional scene added
-Mechanical problems still abound

And yes! WRE! Bring that to MK, and it's original, well themed and a good move in my book!

So cool, if they could blow the dust off that old project...

The fact that WRE wasn't built has to be the most disappointing thing to happen to Magic Kingdom...and there have been many.

Oh, I like this thread! I'll post:

- I'm NOT bothered by the removal of the talking skull. Its speech was dull and it wasn't all that impressive. Plus I like how there is no warning for the drop and you just go into the inky blackness and "stumble" upon the drop. Makes a nice transition into the town.

- Davy Jones is cool, when he works. It's pretty much on and off on a daily basis and that's just sad.

- Barbossa AA himself does not bother me but the fact that he's not on the Black Pearl does. Since a certain guy didn't want the Pearl, they just shouldn't have put in Babs (I'm calling him that from now on). Cannon air effects do not work and should. Adding the Spanish Guard figures from Disneyland would be great.

- Jack AAs are great and the chase scene is certainly better, but I wouldn't mind seeing those dueling DLRP pirates in that scene either! Not a huge fan of the dummies on wheels they got there now.

- Audio and AAs that were not replaced are in bad shape. Really sad for one of the resort's premier attractions to be like this

- New fire is great

- I miss the figures from the old Treasure scene and wish they were moved elsewhere in the ride

- I miss the Parrot out front, it has no business begin in DTD.

- I want the new ending up the speedramp I thought up in another thread I made up for the idea.

when you say davy jones .. you mean that mist screen projection ?

it sure looks nice .. but you can even buy that for your own living room , why is breaking down so often ? :shrug:
