Nibblesandbits Amazingly Wonderful Trip Report Number 7 (Feb. 3-9)

Hello all and welcome to another installment of my wonderful trip reports. Let’s see, I think I’ve now made it down there 4 times in a year for a whole year (if the year started in Feb.) APs really are dangerous! And sadly enough...I still have another TR floating around on the main page here...maybe I do go down too often...:lookaroun

This trip was just me and What’s His Face (WHF from now on for those of you not in the know) and our vacation dates were from Feb. 3-9.

This really was a quick jaunt down to the House of Mouse, since WHF and we have our APs and well, we get free hotel stays since WHF works for a hotel chain. Also, it’s our (apparently annual) Christmas present to each other. However, we were also trying to budget ourselves and spend as little money as possible, while getting a nice “warm” getaway. (I use warm loosely…as you’ll plainly see later.) So, off we went.

As with any vacation, to keep the place getting stale, we tried some things we’d never done before. And we had a really great time with each other, which is the goal, right? We also experienced our first AP preview ever, which was really great.

So, now, what you’ve all been waiting for…let’s get on with it!

Getting Down there and Epcot

Today, was a first for me. Today, I attempted something I never thought I’d ever do ever. Today…I drove down to Disney World. I’m a flyer. I like getting on a plane and knowing I’ll be there in a few hours. But for this trip, we knew that if we’d have to rent a car if we flew in, since we were staying off property and with gas prices being cheaper now, it ended up being a lot more fiscally responsible to get in the car and drive the 16 hour trek down to the Sunshine State. So, since WHF really wanted to, I decided I’d try driving down just this once. I had a friend who constantly does it (since he’s afraid of flying) and swore it wasn’t so bad…I was hoping he’d be right. Plus, if I hated it, I’d could go back to flying next time. :D

We decided to leave on Tuesday night, after work, so that way we’d be taking one less day off work and we could drive overnight and not get stuck in any sort of traffic.

So, we hit the road at 8:15 pm, stopped off at Jack in the Box for dinner and sped off into the road unknown. I was really uneasy about this trek. This was the longest I’d ever been in a car and I really didn’t know what to expect. I’d been in a car to Chicago and that was a 6 hour drive, which felt long in itself. 16 hours, I was not looking forward to it.

I drove the first half…and tried like crazy once WHF took over to fall asleep at around 2:30 in the morning. Unfortunately, I guess my body doesn’t like to sleep in the car, because I could NOT get comfortable. Finally, once we’d finished passing through Atlanta, I got a little bit of sleep.

I woke up after we’d hit the Florida state line and we stopped at a Huddle House there. I did not enjoy it very much. It was only ok…even though I was STARVING!!! Guess I was too hungry to eat, if that makes any sense.

From there, I finished up the rest of the drive. We got to our first of 3 hotels for this journey…the Airport Hyatt. Now, many of you have seen this Hyatt, as it is the hotel that is actually IN the airport. It’s a very nice hotel…we definitely enjoyed our stay, even though it was only for one night. Our room had balcony with a view and we could see planes take off. Luckily, it was quiet there…we didn’t hear any planes or maybe I was simply too tired to care.

Our room:

DSC00461.jpg

Since I was so incredibly tired, I took a nap before we headed off to Epcot. Today was actually a bonus day for us. We hadn’t planned on going to Epcot until Saturday, but WHF really wanted to go to a park today (I think he was too excited to wait), so we decided to take the trip over there. So, around 6 or so in the evening, we got in the car to head to Epcot. (Keep in mind, I’ve only had about 4-5 hours of sleep total…nothing like going at it hard…)

First though, we made a stop at the place to get the best burger on property…Beaches and Cream. Oh…it’s so incredibly good. I had a burger with cheddar cheese and a No Way Jose, which I ate about half of. (Not bad for a tiny woman!) Trying to make this at home just isn’t as good as it is on property though. Must be something in the ice cream down there! :D

DSC00490.jpg

After our delicious meal (and being stuffed like a pig) we decided to go to Epcot through the International Gateway. Let me preface this next portion of the TR by stating it was cold…extremely cold for Florida. It was definitely low 30s that night. So, we bundled up and froze!!!

On our way through World Showcase to get to Future World, we stopped to hear Off Kilter…a band I’ve heard so much about from here, but had never seen them perform. They are really great. I only wished that we’d gotten to see more, but it was their last song. I’ll definitely stop and see them again sometime.

DSC00467.jpg

From there, we hit up and attraction that houses my good buddy, Figment!

DSC00468.jpg

DSC00474.jpg

From there, we froze our way over to the Land where at 7 pm, we managed to get Fastpasses for Soarin for 8 pm. That never happens…but as I may have mentioned…it was cold that day…everyone had gone home.

Then it was off to Find Nemo…he just keeps getting lost…we need to put a leash on that fish or something! We also had time to explore the pavilion a bit, looking at the manatees and exploring Bruce’s shark area. Ooh! I wanted to mention…on the ride, the jellyfish were moving up and down AND the fish that tries to attack Marlin was moving. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him move, he’s always been static when I’ve visited. It was cool to get to experience that part of the attraction.

DSC00477.jpg

From there, we hopped on SSE, in which I attempted to take pics, but not a one turned out. Boo…camera isn’t that good. :( Then we hurried on over to Test Track.

So, you want to know the best thing about going on Test Track when it’s freezing…the fact that there’s no one in line for it! We walked right into the preshow and walked right onto the ride as well. AND when our ride was done, since no one else was in line, we got to stay on Test Track for another lap! The bad thing about going on it when it’s cold…the 65 mile an hour loop…it’s freaking cold!!!!!

Then we ran over to Soarin so we could ride with our FPs, and then we literally ran to get a spot for Illuminations since it was starting in less than 10 minutes. We didn’t get the greatest spot, but it was sufficient enough that we could see most things. (There was a tree in the way, partially.) Illuminations is my all time favorite fireworks show though. Love, love, love “We Go On”.

After Illuminations, it was time to make the trek back to the airport to go to sleep. (how often do I get to say that?)

MK and Trail's End

We got up, checked out of the one hotel and it was off to yet another hotel. This time, we were checking into the Hyatt Grand Cypress. We stayed here last year and for anyone looking for a review, it can be found in my TR #4. It’s a wonderful hotel though. Really a great place. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to spend as much time here this time as we did last year.

So, first things first after checking into and getting settled at our new hotel was going over to the Magic Kingdom!!!

DSC00492.jpg

DSC00494.jpg

(It was still cold today, notice the scarf!)

Today, we were meeting up with my good buddy and yours…Vince! (otherwise known as Merhearted.) We got to hang out with Vince pretty much the entire day…of course, this was the best part of the trip…:lookaroun (Vince would have made me say that.)

We were going to go to Space to see wait times, but WHF had other plans in mind. He wanted to ride Stitch. Ugh…alright. I will tell you, I can handle this ride once every so often…2 times in like 3 months, way too many times! Needed more of a break there.

Then we Fped Space and went right over to ride Splash, which chicken Vince won’t ride…I keep trying though! But, because it was freezing out that day, there was no one in line! We walked right on! Plus, we stayed dry b/c the water cannons weren’t on and we got to sit in the back.

We were going to hit up BTMR, but it was broken down, so we went to Pirates and then saw the JC. The skipper we had was good, but I still have the comparison to the amazing skipper I had and he didn’t quite make it to that amazing level that I’ve had before. Nicholas still takes the cake at the JC!

DSC00497.jpg

Also, didn’t know they sold these coconuts outside of Pirates…these things are cool! I might have to pick one up next time I go down…I think they’re awesome!

DSC00500.jpg

Then it was time for our Fpes at Space…however, before we got on while we were standing in line…problem!!! Space Mountain goes down and the lights all come on!

DSC00503.jpg

Space came back up about 15 minutes or so later and we got to ride. Then we went to the TTA and Buzz…where I got creamed yet again by both Vince and WHF. I don’t know why I suck at this ride so badly!! I simply receive pity points. L Then it was off to visit those ghoulish creepies at the HM. Once we got off that, it was time for us to go to our ressies at Trail’s End.

We originally had ressies for 2, but since Vince was with us, we invited him, knowing that it wouldn’t be hard to add one more to our party. So, we separated with us taking the boat and Vince taking his car (this is important.)

We got straight on the boat, since it was sitting right there and got to Ft. Wilderness in like 10 minutes or so. We checked in and waited for a few minutes, but Vince still wasn’t there, so we decided to sit down and start eating. (Such good friends… )

The meal at Trails End is amazing. If you’ve never been, go! It’s a buffet and it’s fabulous…and thanks to DisneyBunny for letting us know about this place. The fried chicken is amazing, the have great mashed potatoes, green beans, corn bread, plus they had a really great brownie! Keep in mind…Vince still isn’t here and we’ve already pretty much eaten the meal portion (hadn’t had dessert yet.)

Finally, Vince comes strolling in the door. He’d thought he could take his car to Trail’s End…not realizing that he had to take the internal bus system to get there…so he drove his car there, realized he couldn’t park, drove it back to the main parking lot and then had to wait for a bus. Silly Mermaid!

After that, we parted ways with Vince as it was too cold for us to go back to the parks. We’d frozen our butts off already for a good portion of the day, what with the high being somewhere in the 30s.

So, we decided we’d head over to the coziest resort on property…the Wilderness Lodge! This was the perfect choice…we first went to the Iron Spike Room, but they were refurbing a portion of it, so we played some checkers (in which I won) and then left because I’d heard about a fireplace somewhere within the hotel that wasn’t in the lobby. So, we went exploring and found it! It’s a cozy little space with just 2 chairs and couch, but it was wonderful! We loved it so much…we fell asleep…:lookaroun Around 11:30 we both woke up and realized we’d better go. We didn’t want to look homeless or something! Before we left though, I got myself a delicious Magic Cookie Bar!!! :slurp: Then back to the hotel it was.

Awesome! Lovin' the report.

They sell the coconuts in the BouTiki at they Polynesian, too. We bought and sent one home to our boys last May when we went to WDW without them. I don't know if it was nice or not to send them a post card every day of the trip. We wanted them to know we were thinking of them but I guess it could be misconstrued as rubbing it in. LOL!

My hubby is a huuuuge aviation buff and has always wanted to stay at the hotel in the airport. Very cool that you had a pic and were able to let me know about the noise level. And you totally cracked me up when you said how many times can you say you've gone to the airport...to sleep. THat's just funny! :ROFLOL:

Can't wait for more!!!

Nibbs...I can't believe you'd never seen Off Kilter!! They're awesome, huh? But I guess everytime I go to WDW I see or do something I'd never done. (CoP, Stitch and MILF still need to be seen...and I've never even been to Beaches N Cream...Ok there's A LOT I haven't done)

Your 16 hour trek reminds me of back in 2004 we made the exact length of trip to Disneyland Resort. Ummmm, I am NOT a fan of that long of a trip. You didn't say how you felt about it? Maybe that is waiting until you tell us about the drive home...

Today, we got a late start. A very late start and it was not my idea. I would have been at the parks earlier, but WHF had other plans in mind. Today, he wanted to take me to Girodano’s. The best pizza place in all the world! They have them in Chicago and I was so happy to hear that the same Chicago style pizzeria was found in Florida, right outside of Disney’s gates! So amazing.
After that…we went to Hollywood. Disney’s Hollywood Studios, that is.

DSC00504.jpg

We parked and I was mad b/c the park said it was closing at 7 that night and it was like 2 pm. But WHF and I decided to make the best of it…

DSC00506.jpg

We first went to RNRC and rode with no wait in the single rider line. Then we checked out TSMM’s waits, which were very prohibitive…lined up all the way out the door. No thank you. So, we went to Muppets instead.

After that, I was supposed to meet one of my podcast listeners so we could see the American Idol Experience together. Unfortunately, our planning was poor, as we had decided to meet right as Block Party Bash was coming. So, I got to experience this with a show stop for the first time. We were in the Monster’s Inc section.

From there, we went and saw the AIE in passholder previews. I was supposed to meet my listener in front on AIE, but the parade, as I’d mentioned messed that up. I waited for her for like 15 minutes after the parade had passed. But to no avail.

While I was waiting, I saw someone I recognized. It was Jackie (brkgnews) who was with tiggerific418 and they were waiting on SweetMagic to meet them. Plus, James (NemoRocks…that’s right, isn’t it James…) was already inside. So, since I didn’t see my friend, I decided I’d just hang out with them for the time being.
We all got inside, no problem and I met James. Unfortunately though, I was a little preoccupied trying to find my friend. I ended up finding her and told the WDWMagic gang that I was sorry, but I would have to leave. I was sad to have done that, so  hi guys! Sorry again!!!

So, on we went to the AIE preview. I thought the whole show was very well done! It was excellent and the stage looks phenomenal! Just like the real thing. The performers were all very good too. WHF liked the show so much though, he wished we could have saw the finale too. So, it can have the repeatability factor. Here's my review from this site:

"Give It A Try...It May Surprise You"

I went to the AP preview on Feb. 6th at 4:00 and I have to say I really enjoyed it. All 3 performers were teenagers, but they all had decent voices. No one was the trainwreck that people think there will be out there. Sure, you could see nerves, but no one was outright horrible.

Also, the stage was outstanding. I know it's been said before, but it does look just like the real stage and blows you away when you enter the theater.

The show was very entertaining and worked almost exactly like it does on the show. There were the three judges and the thing that I liked about the Experience show was that they did tend to try to give advice to the contestants about what they could do better.

Now, keep in mind, I'm a fan of American Idol. But I don't believe you have to be a fan of the show to be entertained. I think that people who like the show aspect of the Studios will enjoy this attraction. If you're more of a rides person, this might not be for you. However, I'm always one who likes to give everything a try and believes that everyone should go in with an open mind about everything that is there.

From there, we left my friend and went a rode Star Tours. Also, somewhere in our day, we got to visit the Streetmosphere characters…I love them so much! They are always a blast! And there’s a new character out (whom I think, I’m not positive though) is played by the same guy who does Frances Floot…he’s a British plumber visiting…OMG! He’s freaking hilarious. At least to WHF and I. We got to see the show where the characters have to come up with jokes based on suggestions from the audience…his were always terrible and convoluted and long, ending in no joke at all. Then when he’d come back up to the microphone, he’d apologize about his last joke saying how he was sorry and that we didn’t deserve that last one. Maybe it was one of those things where you had to be there, but it was hilarious! I’d wished I’d taken video of it!

New Banners:

Streetmosphere: (They ended up hog-tying Paige Turner… )

DSC00553.jpg

This is the plumber I was talking about:

DSC00551.jpg

DSC00550.jpg

We then had dinner ressies scheduled for 50s Prime Time. I love this place. It’s such a great restaurant. So much fun and really delicious. I want to try other restaurants at DHS, but I love 50s so much, I can’t give it up. I ended up getting the pot roast this time again and a chocolate shake that was amazing. It was so chocolatey.

From there, we went to ride TSMM. The wait time said it was 80 minutes, but it was really closer to 20-30.

Now, here’s where the interesting part takes place. The park, as I’d mentioned was to close at 7...however, Fantasmic was supposed to be showing at both 7:00 and 8:15...I didn’t understand what was going on. So, since we thought the park was closing at 7:00 we’d ran from 50s to get in line for TSMM at like 6:40. However, when we’d gotten off the ride, we noticed that they were still letting people in, so we were like…ok, and got back in line. Turns out, they pushed the hours back one hour, so the park was open until 8! Sweet! I ended up winning the first round of TSMM, but WHF won the second one. He thinks the trick is to sit on the right hand side.

From there, we went to ride RNRC. There was no single rider line going then, so we had to stand in the regular line. After that, the park was closed, so I walked around and took some pics and shopped.

MK

Today we got up and we went to Fudruckers for lunch, which was good. Then it was off to the parks. We hit up the MK today and rode the monorail to get there. The cool thing was, I asked to ride in the front and I got my wish! It was my first time ever riding in the front of the monorail!!! Whoo! If you’ve never done it, ask. They’ll be happy to oblige you if they can.

DSC00582.jpg

DSC00589.jpg

DSC00586.jpg

DSC00584.jpg

From there, we got in the park and were going to see if we could get any ressies for tonight from Guest Relations, but first, we ran into someone we had to meet.

DSC00591.jpg

After that, we went to Guest Relations and asked about getting a ressie for Liberty Tree Tavern and were lucky enough to be able to choose when we wanted to eat! So, we had an 8:40 ADR for dinner.

One thing I noticed today…the park was BUSY!!!! We had originally planned on going to Epcot today, but instead went to MK since that’s our favorite and we didn’t get to do everything we’d wanted. The place was NUTS!

So, as we were trotting up Main Street to head towards Tomorrowland, I ran into some one else I “knew” from good old WDWMagic. It’s mpaul32001! So, we stopped and chatted for a while. He was there to film the new 3:00 parade.

Since the park was busy that day though, we decided to go and we decided it would be a great idea to hit up the lesser visited attractions. First things first, we did COP, and got FPes for Space. then we did Philharmagic, which had just opened from a refurb.

We were going to do HM, but the line was really long, so we did Tom Sawyer Island instead. My first time experiencing this. I liked it, but thought it wasn’t exactly my cup of tea. I can see kids loving this place though. The caves scared the crap outta me too. I’m not a fan of closed dark spaces…guess I should have known better than to get into a cave.

DSC00595.jpg

DSC00596.jpg

DSC00599.jpg

DSC00600.jpg

DSC00604.jpg

Unfortunately, I should have charged my camera, as I ended up not having a battery the rest of the day.

After that, we FPed BTMR and we were going to do Pirates, and while that wait said 30 minutes, there was no way it was 30 minutes! It was clearly longer as they had people roped all the way through the outside. So, we decided to walk around a bit. We tried the Frontierland Shooting Arcade for the first time, which was a lot of fun and I’m a pretty decent shot. Then we got myself a Mickey’s Premium and took a ride on the TTA. It was so busy that even the TTA had a line!!

After that, we did IASW, Snow White, Fped Pooh and rode Splash. I’m thinking we also did HM in here, but I can’t really remember. After that, we went and used our FPes for BTMR…and here’s a tip…if you aren’t really interested in seeing the fireworks, and want to ride rides during that time, but wouldn’t mind catching the fireworks too, go ride BTMR. Get a FP and get in line with about 10 minutes to go…you should be able to see some of the fireworks from the ride!

Then we hightailed it over to Pirates where, despite the busy day, now that the fireworks were over, we walked right on and had a boat all to ourselves.

Now, it was time for our dinner ressies. So, we went to Liberty Tree and got seated immediately. It was a great meal, even though the characters are gone. The salad was phenomenal (and I don’t eat salad often.) That strawberry vinaigrette they put on it is amazing. I have got to make that at home sometime. Also really enjoyed the flank steak and the apple cobbler.

By the time we got out, it was 9:40. We had 20 minutes to go and 2 rides to get on with FPes. Pooh and Space. We hurried like mad to get on Pooh. We managed it. Then with 10 minutes to go, we ran over to Space…which was…broken down. Bummer. But we waited. We figured there were people in line and the park wasn’t closed yet…they’d let us through. Sure enough, they did even though the park ended up being closed. So, I got my last ride on Space before the big refurb.

Then we went back to the hotel to spend our last night in Orlando.

Last Day, Beach Day

Today was our last day in Florida. We checked out of our hotel and since today was WHF’s day to do whatever he wanted, we drove to his favorite place…Daytona. We had lunch at this great place with crab legs by the ocean. Was a really nice place and it was a great day. Nice and warm. No more cold…

Then we went to visit this lighthouse that WHF had remembered going to before. It’s the Ponce de Leon Lightstation. We actually got the climb the entire thing…which, was 203 steps. If you’re afraid of heights, avoid this one!

DSC00613.jpg

The view from the top:

From there, we went to the beach and hung out there for a while. The water was so cold though! My feet froze!!!

DSC00618.jpg

DSC00620.jpg

And my favorite pic WHF took of me and I don’t know why I love it so much:

DSC00627.jpg

After that, it was time to go. We made the trek back up through Georgia, driving half the way this day and the other half the next. We stayed at a Hyatt in Marietta, Georgia, which is just outside of Atlanta. This was by far, the nicest room we’d ever been in, with the exception of our room when we got married in Jamaica. It was huge!!! These pics don’t even do it justice.

We ate dinner at the hotel since it was late and the only thing open in the area. Then we went to bed.

Driving Home

Today we just drove straight back to St. Louis. We stopped at a Wendy’s in Tennessee to get lunch and got home in great time. We left around 10:30 am eastern and got in around 6:00 pm central. It wasn’t too bad. All in all, we had a great trip!

Up next, my trip report wrap up...

Yaaaayyy!!!! Loving' it! Isn't it cool that you can go to a place you've been to so many times before and still manage a whole bunch of firsts??? I love that!

You really need to go to San Antonio and stay at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort. That place is incredible. It's completely luxurious. When we evacuated for Hurricane Gustav that's where we went and got a great package that included $300 of room charging (that we used at the restaurants and pool bar). Even tho I was only 2 days post-op from my surgery and on many, many lovely medications I thoroughly enjoyed being there. The best part was that my kids were up & running every morning doing kids programs, playing basketball, swimming the lazy river, riding bikes, etc. and I rarely saw them unless it was meal times. LOL! I just wish I could've laid on my tummy for a massage. The place is a heckuva destination in itself without ever factoring in that it's only a mile away from Sea World San Antonio!

Oh! And I gotta tell ya that your abbreviation for Whats-His-Face totally throws me off in a very funny way. I keep seeing it and my brain immediately reads it as "What-The-F***" because the abbreviation is so similar. Go back and read some of your report and insert . It's pretty dang funny! :ROFLOL:

Lovin' the report! Thanks so much!

Final Thoughts:

This trip really was a great one. It was done on such a budget since we didn’t have to pay for tickets (AP), lodging (free nights), and paid very little to get down there (gas was cheaper). Therefore, since all we had to really pay for was food and gas and souvenirs, we spent somewhere around $500 total on this trip. We actually would have spent less, but we decided since we were saving so much money in other ways, that we could splurge a bit on some of the food and souvenirs.

Also, I have to admit…driving isn’t so bad. It’s really way better than I thought it would be. It was a great idea for us to drive all the way down the first day at night because we didn’t have to worry about traffic, plus you’re still really excited that you’re going down to Disney. On the way back, I’m glad we decided to break the trip up into 2 halves. Since it always stinks coming home and this way we got to come halfway and not kill ourselves forcing ourselves to drive back again in one day.

So the big question…would I drive the 16 hour drive again? The answer, (and I never thought I’d say this) is yes. If circumstances warranted it, I would consider it without hesitation. (Matter of fact, one of my best friends and I are planning a trip and driving is definitely an option for the two of us…will just depend on monetary issues really.) However, that being said…I would most assuredly prefer flying. I love getting down there quickly. It’s so much nicer, plus I love the Orlando airport. :D But, driving, really isn’t as terrible as I thought it would be.

WHF and I had a marvelous time, as per usual. We loved getting away and spending that quality time together, which is what our vacations are all about. (Well, that and being in the state of Florida...we both really like it there.)

So that’s gonna do it for another installment of Nibbs takes yet another Disney vacation. If you have any questions that I didn’t answer, feel free to ask and I’ll be sure to answer! Thanks a lot and we’ll see you real soon! :D
