They ruined DL's Small World how much longer before they ruin ours?

This attraction is aimed at 1-6 year olds.

This idea is totally bad@$$ for any 1-6 year old.

1-6 year olds don't understand the concept of what bad@$$ means.

This would be equal to bad@$$ to them though.

Awesome idea. The new attraction warms my heart. We were at DL last summer when the ride was shut down. California is maybe something we would do in another 4-5 years. The kids are now BEGGING us to go after seeing these pix. So, I'd say the target audience is being served pretty well on this attraction.

I think ruined is a bit extreme. I think it looks fine, I mean Disneyland Fans seem ok with it after it's reopening. At least Micechat gave it a nice review.

Is that why the MiceAge home page has this quote on it?:

"2/6: small world's makeover is even worse in person, the photos don't begin to capture what a misfire it is. The $75 character pin sets sold at the exit are ample proof this was a merchandising move."

Maybe a micechat poster gave it a nice review, but that definitely did not express the views of the editor. :ROFLOL:

Especialy since the editor was the first one to know about it. (outside WDI)

Ok, it's official.
After watching the new videos and checking out Miceage's photos, I have formed an opinion about the Small World change.

It reeks of AWESOME!
I totally dig it.
Seriously, bring it to MK asap.

I walked past the MK one today and was compelled to throw a verbal jab it's way, "Yeah, now you're even more boring! Hurry up and get yourself some characters you lazy ride, you! Why can't you be more like your big brother?"

It did turn out darn good, I have to give 'em that.

It's amazing how much publicity this rehab has created here in SoCal. It was on the front page of the OC Register today in a big color article, the Los Angeles Times also made a big deal about it, the local LA and San Diego TV news programs all did pieces on it with reporters and news vans dispatched to Disneyland, and the drive time radio hosts were mentioning it and chatting about it on talk radio.

Almost eery how much attention it got, on a day where the stimulus bill was struggling in DC, a major winter storm was bringing heavy rain and snow to Southern California, and the state government had its first "Furlough Friday" to cut costs. And yet the new version of Small World at Disneyland was the big topic.

If it proves popular at Disneyland, Walt Disney World has to be considering this soon at some level.

Here's the deal. I consider myself a big Disney fan. I talk about it a lot, and I constantly enjoy it. I'm at the absolute edge of insane for it, but I've not fallen over the edge yet. I enjoy what's there, and enjoy changes when they come. If this bothers you that much, you're worse than me, and seriously, at that point you need a new hobby, or a girlfriend or something. Seriously... Take a step back. It's new dolls, next to other dolls, in a boat ride, at a theme park. Take a deep breath.. calm down... shh shhhhh. It's OK.. Just relax.... Things will be OK. You can still go on it, it's 95% the same.. SHHH. SHHHHHH... Don't worry, Don't worry! It will be OK. Just sit back, imagine yourself as a 10 year old (it's the target audience you know) and view it from their eyes. Things will be OK, You'll still have fun, you will still smile. Just calm down, and enjoy 95% of it, and ignore the 5% change. Life goes on... Big smiles now! Big smiles!!! There you go! See, that wasnt so bad was it?

I have to agree with Lee and the others who like or otherwise don't mind the changes. I was hesitant when I heard of the addition of the characters, but after seeing HKDL's implementation, I knew DL's would be just fine. From what I've seen, there aren't any major things to get panties in a twist about. They took great care to keep them close to Mary Blair's original look and feel for the ride (eg: Simba's whiskers. Read the articles linked to from Micechat). Some are better than others, but I still like it as a whole.

Also, it peeves me to no end when people invoke the "What Would Walt Do" argument. You have NO IDEA what he would do. He was a crafty guy that did a lot of surprising things. There is no way that anyone (including those close to him) could even begin to imagine what was rolling around in that head of his. You cannot put him in a box and say "Walt wouldn't have done this", or "Walt would have done that", so don't even try.

The only one that feels just a tad odd is Cinderella in the French scene. The rest of the French dolls are all done up in lace and sequins and glitter doing the can-can and toasting champagne. But Cinderella is in her housekeepers rags instead of fancy ball gown, and she seems a bit odd next to the ritzy French girls around her. But that was the one slightly jarring addition. All the other figures looked fabulous and totally fit in their environments.

In the Hong Kong version of IASW, Cinerella is dressed up with full ball attire and is standing with Charming. The only picture I've seen of Cindy in DL's I liked for its uniqueness, but it only shows her, not really her surroundings.

I like the change - based on the pictures only that is. I was worried the characters would be their standard designs wedged into the ride. But seeing the pictures I have no problem with the characters in "Small World style". They seem to blend in so well it could make things more fun - see how many Disney characters you can spot type thing.

These changes look so minor on a ride that really did need some sprucing up. I have to agree that they don't really change the ride, and at least provide a good scavenger hunt when you go in.

They should provide a list of aded characters so your kids can find them.

Like a giant Where's Waldo book:)

I don't know what Walt would have done but I know that he respected Mary Blair too much to put his own charactres in her attraction.

Had 10 or 12 of these dolls been put in I wouldn't mind but 29 (plus Carpet and Mushu kite) seem like overkill. The Pixar additions also seem to reek of corpoarte Disney marketing mess as everything, even Small World, now has to have something related to Pixar in it.

My favorite doll is actually the White Rabbit. I prefer working girl Cinderella as ball gown one would just imply "look at me I'm clip art off model Cinderella! Buy my fake jewlery!"

Here's my list for what should have been included:

Alice
White Rabbit
Peter Pan
Aladdin
Jasmine
Mulan
Simba
Timon
Pumbaa (these 3 can pass off as generic African animals while still resembling thir film counterparts without seeming obvious)
Cinderella (I guess you cna thorwn in Jaq and Gus as thier small enough to go unoticed)
Ariel (There are Mermiads to begin with, adding her isn't so bad)
Pinocchio (just not as frightening in design)

The rest are all modern Disney inventions and have nothing do do with cultures/stories of the world (unless you're impling America cuture is nothing but commercialism) and are not welcome in my mind.
