Gas here around $3.07-$3.15.

$2.91 a gallon here...and milk is $3.99, and my property taxes are going down.

The economy is cyclical - it has less to do with politics (although a politician can INFLUENCE it, they cannot control it) and more to do with the cycle. Right now we are in a slight downturn. It will get better, probably sooner than later.

BTW, my well diversified 401k portfolio has yet to take a hit...I have not made much on it, but I have not lost, either. AND my ESOP is up...way up. I'm not worried about the company, either...I don't work for an Enron.

I'm more upset after doing my taxes this year than anything (more than doubled from last year...cuz we're "rich"), so we won't be spending as much at WDW.

Diversification is the key. No what the economic times are.

Pardon my cynacism but I have been hearing this litany all my life. It seems people are always complaining about this same "woe is me" stuff over and over and over. Even in robust economic times you hear the same complaints. Now if Bush's Tax Cuts expire  then there will be economic trouble worse than anything anyone under 50 has ever seen. And you can take that to the bank, so to speak.

Interestingly, my husband works in sales in a music store and they had their best Christmas in a long time. He also made more money in 2007 that all previous years. His pay is partly based on sales.

I am so tired of people talking about the middle class is getting hit hard. I am middle class and know plenty of people who are and I just dont see it. Maybe, its just because you have been listening to liberals:hurl: too much lately, George Bush is the devil, the middle class is going extinct, all the rich people are getting all of the tax breaks blah, blah, blah. Anyway, the economy is fine as far as I am concerned. Im sorry that milk went up 20 cents a gallon, get over it.

Before this thread is closed for breaking the politics rules, I have to agree I don't have a problem with the economy...but I live in a rural area, in a modest/small trailer, have a small mortgage, we eat out infrequently, and we are basically careful. But we've been lucky we didn't invest in real estate, and we didn't buy a home bigger than we could afford like the ARM crisis folks. We're not in the iPod, iPhone, trinket and gadget loving category.

And to answer the OP - No, the economy is not affecting our Disney trips...

but we never did anything really extravagant because we live pretty local. We may stay one or 2 nights on property in a year, but we mostly go for day trips.

The economy isn't really affecting things this year. 1999 and 2000 were the worst years for my household. My family is considered middle class, but money really hasn't been an issue, other than when my wife went into the hospital for major surgery.

Truth be told, the economy is like a religion, if enough people believe it's bad, it'll become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Right now, salaries are up across the board and more people are employed now than in the past 2 decades. Retail sales have skyrocketed despite the media coverage to the contrary.

The housing situation is difficult for some people, but then again- many people (including myself) have to learn about living outside your means.

I'll be headed to WDW or Disneyland right now. I wanted to go to Japan this year, but the suppressed dollar value does make that rather unlikely.

BTW- I presently live in Illinois. I think this flavors, in part- my perceptions. Our prices for gas and milk have always been high. Last year, gas spiked past $4 a gallon at the stations near me.

As an interesting side note- take a look at the gov. census. The middle class is indeed shrinking- but it's joining the upper class and not sliding backwards.

I have 2 401K accounts, both have lost about a grand each (and there's not that much in there to begin with)- but as someone said before- it's all cyclical. What goes down, must come up.

That is, unless you have a government propping up a failing company such as Enron or WorldCom. As much as a scandal as it seemed to be, the current administration did not cause or inflame those events.

The fact that the dollar is in the toilet is the BECAUSE the economy is so bad.....

Somebody please use that thing called the internet that you have and read about the Great Depression and then come back and tell me how bad you've got it.

Bless you

Recession, depression, economy boom or bust, call it what you will. I work for a wholesale bakery. In January of 2007, flour was 12.58 a bag. January of 2007, flour was at 28.00 a bag and now in February we are being quoted prices of $48.00 a bag for the spring and summer flour. In the 18 years I've worked for this company I have never seen us raise prices more than once in a year's time. We have now been forced to increase our prices for the third time in the last 12 months. This price increase is directly tied into the rise in flour.

We are going to Disney this year as we didn't make it last year (first time we missed since 1993). This has nothing to do with the economy at all. My niece was diagnosed with cancer last year and we weren't able to go since she was involved in chemo, radiation and finally a stem cell transplant from May through January. She is now done with treatments, her hair and eyebrows have started to grow back and she is finally back at school. Hopefully in September she'll be back on the cheerleading squad. Thanks to all on this forum who have heard her story and sent kind words and prayers. It looks like 2007 is going to be a much better year than 2006.

I hope you are all doing well and am so glad to hear she is doing better. You have been in many prayers.

Well over $4/gallon here in Orange County too. Gas is running around $3.60/gal or so. Its a sad day when milk for the kids costs more than gas for the car.

I think milk traditionally costs more than gas. Good thing I don't buy milk twenty gallons at a time.

But I do get your point.

I think the topic is:

Is the economic outlook effecting your trip?

I guess you are right. My answer is no then. Im just tired of hearing about how bad the economy is. If you really want to see a bad economy though just you wait until Clinton or Obama are elected (God Forbid) this country will be screwed up beyond belief.

 Yes that seems to be impacting the trips. I am feeling pretty happy in my choice not to have kids....

I kind of feel a little jealous of the people that live far enough away to be able to spend a week at WDW. I know I got average of twice a month for day trips, but I've never just been for a week and immersed myself in Disney.

Without stepping further into the political muck, dare I suggest that this is the one year where Mickey Mouse may just be the best candidate of all?

He gets so many votes each election, I wonder how much more it would take... :p

Yes it is affecting my household. We drive there. We are a family of 7, although my DS's are grown but they want to go with us and they don''t have great jobs. Even if they don't go there are 5 of us. Milk ranges 3.98 to 4.50 and that is Walmarts brand. Gas is 2.82 a gallon. Last year I was saving each paycheck, now it is almost living from paycheck to paycheck. I had my heart set on going to WDW this coming summer. Now I can't. I might be able to look at going for the summer of 2009 if things go well the rest of this yr.
