I heard way back that in 2004 the Disney-MGM Studios would officially change it's name to Disney Studios. Is this still going to happen or has it been axed??

I am hoping they change the name to "The Disney Studios", looks better, sounds better... and alot of people I know have been calling it that now for years now.

Yeah, i've been wondering the same thing. They were gonna change it back like a couple of years ago, but I havn't heard any other news. I really don't care what they change it to.

If they change it to Disney Studios, it sounds too much like Universal Studios. Besides, whatever they change it to, I will still call it Disney MGM-Studios like what most will still call it.

Too many people equate Disney-MGM Studios with the simple abbreviation: MGM. To remove it would create mass confusion and hysteria for the millions of Walt Disney World guests that expect to visit "MGM" and ride its signature thrill rides. ;)

Interesting dilemma. If MGM doesn't try to renegotiate a contract, then Disney should drop the MGM. But if MGM stays, then the name would be the same. What if another studio wants in the game? Then is it possible we'll see Disney Warner Brothers Studios?

And then there's the whole "working studio" problem. Each year, there is less and less of a "working studio." So Studios actually becomes a falsehood in the title. Maybe it should be "Movie Kingdom," or "Mega Movie Hit Land," or "Entertainment Prototype Conglomeration Of Theatre/TV."

Okay. Maybe just Disney Studios (but not working).

I want it to stay as the Disney MGM Studios. As SirNim said, everyone uses the simple abbreviation of MGM. That's what I say. When I tell my parents that we should go to the Studios, I don't say "let's go to the Disney MGM Studios," but rather "let's go to MGM." Besides, it'd be weird saying Disney Studios. If they had to change it, at least call it WALT Disney Studios Orlando (or Florida), like Walt Disney Studios Paris. But then again, that sounds too much like Universal Studios.

Let's just keep it as the Disney MGM Studios, and negotiate a new contract (well, Mike probably wouldn't do that  ). :D

That's interesting... Disney has their ways of showing that something will happen soon enough. Little things like this show when change is coming =)

We recently got the WDW magical gatherings planner dvd, and it refers to the park as "Disney Studios"

That is what I was going to say! It sure does say "Disney Studios," with no mention of MGM. It is sad that people equate the Studios park with MGM, when it is a DISNEY owned park, but even more sad is the fact little to no studio production work is going on there any more. We can say what we want about Universal Studios, but when you go to that park, they do have some production going on, even if it it just Nickelodeon.

It won't bother me if Disney drops MGM from the name of the studios. Maybe I don't fully appreciate the scope of MGM's current film business, but Disney-Warner Brothers, Paramount, 20th Century Fox or even Sony would seem a better business partner if they wanted to hook together with another film studio right now, but that presupposes an ongoing commitment to having a production studio on site.

So if the Disney-MGM Studios park loses "MGM" and "Studios," what will be left? Maybe re-name the whole thing to "Disney Hollywood Park." They already have Sunset Blvd and Holywood & Vine. All they need is a replica "Hollywood" sign.

We just call it MGM when on vacation. I mean it's just a name. It dosn't affect me whatever "they" call it. We don't actually equate anything with the name. Don't even really think about it. It's still MGM to us. I mean who actually says "Disney's Animal Kingdom" or "Disn'y's Magic Kingdom? Keep it simple folks. ;)

I think there some benefit to MGM remaining in the name. To me, it gives the park more credibility and suggests that it is more than just rides based on Disney movies. I don't know if that makes sense. But if I had never been there before, that's probably what I would be thinking.

Good thread - I was dicussing this with my girlfriend about this over the weekend. When I was there in 2000, the name had changed in the park to "Disney Studios". In fact, they had just finished redoing the sign just to the right of the chinese theatre right before Voyage of the Little Mermaid from "Disney MGM Studios" to "Disney Studios".

However, when I was there in October of 03 and January of 04, the sign had been switched back to read "Disney MGM Studios".

Interestingly, the park is called "Disney Studios" on the vacation planning DVD, yet "Disney MGM Studios" in the most recent Souvenier book, and the buses all still say "Disney MGM Studios".

So basically, I don't know what the heck is going on.

To add to the chaos....What if Disney buys MGM...as one of the moves to stop a hostile takeover from Comcast or any company like Comcast?...What should happen then???

I for one would like the park to be called The Disney Studios...the whole MGM thing in the name is big neg with me....just my opinion though..

I agree... there is just a ring that is heard when you say:

The Disney-MGM Studios, where showbiz is!!
