Adventure #9: Firsts, a Dream, an Anniversary, & Three Destinations...

...I need another drink! :hammer:

I know I've neglected a whoooole lotta TRs out there for a long time. There's a reason for that. I vowed to myself to stop reading and start writing. I also vowed not to even begin posting until the report was completely written and assembled so posting would literally be cut & paste. This puppy was quite the monster to tackle but I did it! Enjoy.

Greetings to my dedicated readers, friends, family, and noobs alike! Boy, do I have a story to tell you so let’s get this thing rolling...

First, the basics:

Who? The usual suspects, of course. That would be me (The SweetPee), the old man (Tracey), the 15 year old all-knowing son (Chandler), and the 13 year old not-so-baby-of-the-family son (Brian). Later in the trip you’ll see a character from my very first trip report return for more fun. Yep, you guessed it! My big brother, the uncle extraordinare, Jerry!

What? Duh. Vacation. Anywhere but home fits the bill. Thankfully, we had 3 awesome destinations to hit. And celebrating. Can’t forget that we celebrated our 18th anniversary in style!

When? September 9 - 24, 2011.

Where? September 9: on the road & Hampton Inn, Clermont
September 10 - 15: Wilderness Lodge
September 15 - 18: Disney Cruise Line’s Dream
September 18 - 24: Yacht Club

If this is your first time reading a SweetPee report, feel free to peruse my previous reports down there in my signature. There’s better intros with pics there.

Like most folks, it’s amazing how much life you can live in less than a year. When I last left y’all at the end of our 8th adventure in November 2010 I wasn’t 100% sure where or when we’d be back. I wasn’t even sure WDW would be our destination of choice. I managed to find us some new Disney experiences to try...one of which has taken over our souls! You won’t believe it! We sure don’t!

Life has a way of keeping the adventure alive. Towards the end of January this year Tracey got sent on a project in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Don’t know where that is? Yeah, there’s a reason for that. LOL! It’s about halfway in between Dallas, Texas and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The good part was all the moolah all that overtime brings + paid expenses. The bad part was ice, snow, and working 7 days a week for months on end. We got to see a different part of the country, experience real snow & ice (which completely blows), see the Oklahoma City National Memorial, meet new people, and learn new things. After Tracey finished up in Oklahoma he came back to an assignment on a project that was plagued with deadline challenges. Again, great to have all that income from the overtime but bad because he never had any days off. Literally. The only days I think Tracey had off this year were when the snow & ice were dangerous enough for the project to shut down, Easter, and a couple sick days. That’s it. Not even July 4th or Labor Day. And so, that’s how we funded our adventure and were able to shoot for the stars. Tracey worked so hard for so long. If he said “upgrade us to club level” or “add another day to the front of the trip” I didn’t argue. He earned it.

Sweetpea, I'm so lovin this TR!!! The family shots came out Beautiful!!! Got me thinking that possibly we'll have to do that with our girls next year! Was it terrbly, costly? I know its Disney so whats not, but when"s the chance to do that again? Anyhow keep up the great report, love the perfect combo with pics!! Got me missing it something terrible.......!

Thank you! I'm glad you asked about the portrait session because in hindsight I should have given more of the particulars on it. Remember when Disney's Photopass did the private mini-shoots at the deluxe resorts? Yeah, that all changed earlier this year. Photopass doesn't do the shooting for the private sessions anymore be it at the resorts for the 'mini' sessions or anywhere on property (within reason) for the 'enhanced' sessions. Everything was turned over to Disney's Fine Art Photography. Here's a link to their website and you can peruse at your leisure. For private family portrait shoots there's 2 basic routes:

The Mini: Costs $150...setting choices are at 1 of 3 deluxe resorts (Poly, Grand Floridian, or Beach Club)...1 photographer for 20 minutes...no retouching or editing of images...all final images given to you on a photo cd w/copywrite release.

The Enhanced: Costs $350...setting choices are virtually anywhere on WDW property including the theme parks...1 photographer & an assistant for 1 hour...all images retouched/edited...all final images given to you in a personalized 6"x6" proof book. It's not on the website but there is an option to purchase your images on a disc w/copywrite release for an additional $50.

Obviously we went with the enhanced package. Whether or not it's expensive or inexpensive is one of those things that depends on the perspective. Having done an hour-long session in the Magic Kingdom when these were done through Disney's Professional Photographic Services back in 2007 and comparing the cost to what we paid 4 years later, I'm still feeling okay with the money. Back in 2007 we considered booking a professional photographer to do beach pics on Pensacola Beach. That would've cost us in the range of $600 just for the shoot, no pics. In 2007 we paid something like $265 for the shoot w/editing and proof book then spent an additional $800 buying prints and mounted portraits because there was no option to purchase professional images on cd then. At that time we had budgeted about $1k for family portraits no matter where we were taking them so we were pleased we were able to do it at WDW and stay in that range. If you look at it, this go around even with the shoot being more expensive we are going to spend the same if not less. Yes, I have my images on cd. Those files are recommended for printing up to 8"x12" sizes. We still want to sit down and have a couple of the shots from the new sitting done on the mounted foam board or stretched canvas. Those you have to purchase from Disney Fine Arts Photography and they aren't cheap. I'm thinking we'll be right around that same $1k mark when all is said and done.

I know there's going to be those sitting in their chairs thinking, "Holy schnikey! Those people must be rich to not think $1k is a lot." That's not the case at all. My hubby works his off and we do without a lot of things to choose our splurges. I certainly count my blessings to even have the means to spend that thou on portraits. I guess it depends on what you place value on. To me, pictures are everything. We homeschool so I don't spend money every fall and/or spring for school pics. $50 x 2 kids x twice a year (for fall and spring school pics) would be $200 a year. We haven't done portraits for 4 years so multiply that $200 a year times 4. $800. I'm not too far off from my thousand dollar splurge. We also get the benefit of family shots in a place that's extra special to us. I'm feeling just ducky about my spending. I'll do without nails, stretch the dog's groomings, wait 4 months instead of 2 to get my highlights redone, wash my own cars, etc. The pics mean more.

I hope that answered your question. My guess is it's more answer than you really wanted.

Yay yay yay!! I'm so excited you started!! I will never remember everything, but here's a few things I wanted to say -

Stephen does the same thing to me with taking out suitcases!! It makes me nuts! I pack really early and some are done. But there's always a few we need that last morning to stick in our toothbrushes, my make up, etc. He asks every 10 minutes if they're ready. Of course not, the kids just woke up and won't brush their teeth until we are walking out the door! We can carry these as we go out!

We’ve homeschooled twice and gotten very interesting reactions also so I can relate. Have you ever seen Tim Hawkin's homeschool song and video? He homeschools, it's hilarious.

The photo session was awesome! Your hair looks gorgeous, not frizzy at all!! You have some great shots. It's amazing that only took an hour! I think the Morocco ones are my favorites.

The series of the boys through the years in Epcot is also adorable! I love it!

I have the Mickey bowls you were looking at. I like a little magic for breakfast. :D I always put them in the dishwasher, by the way, and they still look great!

Okay, that's all I can remember except that I am loving this trip report!! And I know my favorite part is still to come!!:sohappy:

Yeah! Apparently Sam put's the hurry on Jen like that when she's packing, too! I'm guessing it's a man thing. Either way, it's annoying! Ugh!

Thanks for the compliments on the portraits. It felt like an eternity before I was able to see the images online. I think it was a full 2 months before the cd arrived with the images. I was able to milk that excuse for a loooong time for why my trip report hadn't been posted. :D I'll be honest, tho. I just finished the thing last night. It was such a huuuuge undertaking this time. I had so much I wanted to do with the pics (past and present). It was tough finding the time with all the normal craziness of life. You should all thank my mother for the thing getting finished. Really. When I visit my parents I can all but hole-up in my bed up in my bedroom and stay there for the long-haul. Mom will cook and do laundry and take the dog outside, etc. If it wasn't for getting here and spending 2 days in my bed working I don't know that the report would ever have gotten done.

Thank you, Mom!

The Mickey bowls. How long have you had yours? I have place-settings for 12 of Mickey dishes I got off Disneystore.com 3 or 4 years ago. Man, that stuff is looking a little rough. Like you can tell people have been cutting their meat on the plates. A couple bowls have chips in the rims. I don't think I have the complete 12 settings anymore either because a few dishes have been broken and I can't replace them. It's annoying. I want new dishes and keep holding out for Disney to offer something else. I'm afraid I might have to give up and buy something plain if anymore dishes get broken... **sigh**

Yay! The TR does not disappoint... it's great, really great!

There's so much I wanted to comment on but I've been reading it inbetween dealing with the two kids by myself (Pete's at a conference/course) and I can't remember half the stuff I wanted to comment on.

I'm really enjoying some of your pics... I totally understand the speed up, slow down and take a pic, speed up again walk - I do it all the time at WDW!

Maybe you should try Sunshine Seasons (or the Four Seasons ) during peak dining hours... the place is a madhouse but the food has always been good for us.

When I get my thoughts together I'll be back to comment some more...

I totally understand about being alone with the 2 kiddos and fighting to keep your nose in what you're interested in. Yeah, we should try the Four Seasons again when the food is fresh. Still, where's the product consistancy? If you're open the food should be consistantly the same no matter what point in your operating hours you're in. That's what annoyed me. It's the failure to maintain product quality and consistancy. I do like their desserts and have always been pleased-as-punch with their fresh, uncooked offerings.

Oh yes, much more to come!

We met Chandler at the Tomorrowland Terrace. He told us all about his solo afternoon adventures. Sounded like he had a great time.

We were all pretty hungry so we made our way to Pecos Bills for some grub. It was kinda crazy in there. Looots of people and the CMs filling the orders seemed really disorganized. It was wild.

After we ate I rememberd I wanted to check out the carved rings by the entrance to Adventureland. I don’t know why I never really looked before but Kenzie’s report and pic of her ring stuck with me so I had to go see. Of course I wasn’t leaving without one. We placed the order then headed over to grab FastPasses for BTMRR. While we waited for the ring and FastPass return time we hit Pirates again but with a 15 minute wait. I think that’s the longest we’ve ever waited there. While in line I took pics with my iPhone and used this nifty photo app to play with the lighting and effects.

91498.jpg

914100.jpg

We picked up my new ring...

3d95e374.jpg

...which I love! It wasn’t expensive at all either. Very cool! I was shocked at how quickly the guy does them. :D

Back to BTMRR for our ride. Standby was at 40 minutes with only 1 side of the load running. They seemed short-staffed which was odd. Our wait was a total of like 4 minutes. For once I did feel bad for the people in standby.

While we were at BTMRR I had texted some with Newfiefan. Her family had checked-in today and I was pretty sure she’d be at the MK. Not only were they there, they were close! They were waiting for MSEP near the walkway by Splash. Cool! So we walked over and I found her. Pretty neat stuff! I only knew what she looked like from her pictures! So lots of hugs and short chat. It was so neat to meet another WDWMagicer in person! WooHOOO!!! Newfie was my first! Oh wait....that doesn’t sound so good, huh? LOL!

Anyway, the guys were wanting to head off towards Tomorrowland and I knew we’d be seeing more of Newfiefan once we got back from our cruise so we moved on before we got stuck by the parade.

Brian & Tracey gave the Astro Orbiter a whirl while Chandler and I walked onto Buzz. One of my better scores!

914105.jpg

After our rides we met back up and everyone rode Space Mounting with maybe a 5 minute wait.

914104.jpg

914102.jpg

914103.jpg

Tracey was such a trooper to ride Space with us. I know it’s not so fun for him anymore.

It was almost time for the park to close but we hadn’t been on the Carrousel of Progress yet so we ran for it. We got a private show just our family sitting in the center of the theater. I was singing along before the show start and clapping my hands happily. The CM waiting to start the show smiled and laughed. I guess they don’t get so many folks that happy to be in the Carrousel. I’ve always loved the show even when I was a kid and easily bored. It was another of those things I would daydream about being up there on the stage sitting next to ‘Dad’ living each scene. Before the show started the CM said, “No photography of any kind”. Bummer. I was gonna use my iPhone to take pics. No flash. Even if I had used flash, unless we were between scenes when other theaters can technically see into ours, who was I going to disturb. But still, she did say “of any kind” and Tracey was giving me a hard time about it so I put my phone away. I did snap one as we were leaving, tho. I couldn’t leave without just ONE!

914101.jpg

I’m so bad! Where’s the Disney police when you need ‘em?!

After the show Wishes was wrapping up. Uh-oh. We were caught in the herd heading out. Oh my. It was baaaad. Then we got out of the turnstiles. Holy Moses at the throngs of people lined up for the transportation. The switchbacks for the monorail were all out in front of the turnstiles on that side of the entry plaza. Solid people. It was wild. We hit the line for the Wilderness Lodge boat before it got to it’s peak, thank goodness. Still, we waited just over 20 minutes for a boat which was the longest wait we had on the boats.

Back at the Lodge we had to finish up the rest of the packing. I washed 2 more loads of clothes so nearly everything would be clean. I got to bed at about 12:30 a.m. with my alarm set for 6:00. Yikes!

Thursday, 9/15: Tradin’ in the Wilderness for a Dream!

Today was the day we had been looking forward to more than anything! It was cruise day! We’ve never been on any cruise before let alone a Disney cruise. Other family and friends have tried for years to talk us into trying a cruise with them but we never pictured ourselves enjoying that kind of vacation the way we do our Disney adventures. Here were 2 biggest arguements:

Whenever people are telling how awesome their cruise was a big part of what they talk about is the food. Considering that I battle my weight every day, the last thing I wanted was to be stuck on a ship with nothing to do but eat. It’d be torture to look at all that food and not eat it and torture if I ate it and had to live with my self-loathing. Yes. I know. I’m certifiable.

I don’t like the beach. I’m another shade of oddball in that I don’t really enjoy going to the beach. Why? There’s dirt everywhere. Okay sand. But the sand gets into every nook and cranny of your being and it makes me insane. Then there’s the water. It’s sticky. Go swim in the ocean or the gulf then let your hair air dry, especially when you have hair as long as mine. It’s left crunchy and funky. My whole body feels funky. It’s just nasty. God forbid you get wet then walk thru the sand because now it’s adhered to you. Ugh. Going to the beach for me is like camping. It’s a whooooole lot of work with not enough pay-off to make it worthwhile. No, thank you. There’s no way to win the battle against the dirt. I’ll skip it.

Seeing the reviews of the Dream inaugural voyages here really grabbed my attention. Finally it seemed there was a cruise that appealed to me with plenty of activities to keep me from eating myself into oblivion. I didn’t even have to go to the beach! There’s so much to do that I don’t even have to touch a single toe to the dirt. The icing on the cake was all the wonderful, rich Disney details. I’ve been wishing for fresh Disney experiences. A Disney cruise certainly fit the bill. And that’s how I finally arrived at the thought that I might actually be able to stomach a cruise.

We were most excited to get to this day!

I was up at 6:00 to start getting myself ready. I wanted to actually fix my hair for the 2nd time on the trip so I required some extra time. We were all dressed, packed up, and out of the room around 8:00. While getting ready to go Chandler made a typical teen comment to Tracey that sounded really terrible but I knew from the onset he didn't mean for it to come out the way it did. Of course, Tracey didn't take that in stride. He's really a stickler for some things and lip from teenagers, any teenager, is one of those things he pretty much does NOT tolerate. So the start to the day was seriously tense and not good. Really. We were back to "I'd rather go to work" from Tracey and something along the lines of "I wish a great big truck would run him over" from Chandler. **sigh** Being the momma and wifey is such fun some days.

We pulled away from our Wilderness Lodge home at 8:10. We committed yet another unthinkable Disney violation and cancelled our our Kona Cafe ADR. I don’t know what we were thinking but we decided to hit the IHOP on Irlo Bronson instead. Not the best grub. We shoulda stuck with Kona even if it would’ve cost twice as much. I dunno. The meal was virtual silence and tension so maybe it was better to be in the more quiet setting to let the dust settle some.

We headed out towards Port Canaveral. We had programmed the terminal address into the GPS weeks ago so we could easily pull it back up when the time came. The toll road made the route simple as can be. Of course Tracey was rollin' his eyes each time we had to stop to pay a toll. At the last toll he politely asked the toll booth lady, “Ma’am, is there going to be many more tolls? I need to know if I should stop to take out a loan.” She laughed and told us she was our last stop. We did pass another toll booth under construction. I suspect in future years we’ll be paying a little more. Tracey's funny comment to the toll lady was a kinda tension breaker so that was good.

A bit more than halfway we spotted this truck. It’s a sign! The port is calling us...

9151.jpg

When we were getting close we got our first peak:

9152.jpg

And the excitement was building!

9153.jpg

9154.jpg

9156.jpg

9157.jpg

As much as we wanted to rush straight towards the ship we knew that would be totally fruitless. The port doesn’t open to embarking passengers until 11:00 now. We still had a few stops to make. We drove past and found a small liquor store. Tracey got a fifth bottle of Crown Royal and I got a fifth of Parrot Bay coconut rum to carry onboard with us. That’s one great thing about DCL that I’m hearing isn’t the industry standard: you can carry drinks / alcohol / beer / bottled water onboard. You can’t check cases of water or put bottles in your checked bags but you can carry it on with you. Goody for us! Our next stop was an ATM. I know. I know. You don’t pay for stuff with cash onboard. Yeah. But we wanted to have plenty in case we felt like tipping anyone extra nice or...well...just in case. So we stopped and got some cash. Now we’re ready!

We pulled up to the parking garage at the port at 10:35 hoping they’d let us in a few minutes early. They did! It was totally surreal to be THIS close to the ship! It looked like it was sitting right there in the parking lot with the other cars.

9158.jpg

**confession** When I laid my naked eyes on the ship, not just pictures, I teared-up. Really. It's a gorgeous ship in pictures but it's a whoooole other experience to see it in person. It's hard to describe the overall grandeur. It was overwhelming.

We drove up to the level that has the pededstrian bridge across to the terminal building and parked pretty close to the walkway. I think we were only a few cars from it, actually. We gave our checked bags to the porters standing by the walk way then gathered up our carry-ons. 3 out of 4 of us breezed thru the security check. Chandler got frisked by the wand. LOL! From all my reading and studying I had the procedure down. I filled out our health form & proceeded to the check-in line. It was kinda long but moved fast. They took our picture (for the facial recognition software, I think), gave us our boarding group number & keys to the world, and we found some seats to wait for boarding to begin.

Our port arrival time I got when we did our online check-in was 11:30. We scored a great boarding group number!

9159.jpg

I think check-in is when we got our Navigator for embarkation day, too. For those who haven’t cruised with Disney before, the Navigator is the daily info newsletter that’s packed with a full schedule of happenings along with any other info you could need. I scanned just the front page of each to include in my report but if you want to see the whole thing I can scan the rest upon request. So the Navigator for today:

91513.jpg

Then the waiting began. Brian & I took a pic with Minnie but when we went to Shutters to see the picture they only had Brian with Minnie. No clue how that happened.

Waiting:

Boarding began at 11:15. It was sorta hard to hear what all was going on. There were so many people crowded around the line to enter for boarding. It really wasn’t long before our group was called and we had to weave thru the masses to find where to enter. This is the best picture I could get of the little entry way:

91511.jpg

We just followed the people in front of us. We had our room keys swiped. Then we got to take a nice picture which we purchased later in the cruise:

91512.jpg

And then we were being announced and boarding!

It all happened so fast! I knew the first thing we were going to do was have lunch. We had debated the options well before this day so we knew Cabanas was going to be our lunching spot. We headed up and went in as they were opening. I noted the time as 11:45. Not bad at all!

Cabana’s filled up fast. We finished off our lunch then headed off to visit the boys’ teen clubs for Open House. First we went to the tweens club, Edge, for Brian. It was pretty neat. Then we went on the hunt to find the entrance to the Vibe for Chandler. Because Brian is pretty close to his 14th birthday and his older brother was a sold Vibe-age teenager he had the option of choosing which of the two clubs he wanted to be part of for the cruise. It didn’t take long being inside Vibe to know that Brian was going to choose this over Edge. They don’t even really compare with the facilities and awesome surroundings. I mean, come on, Vibe has it’s own sun deck with hot tubs. The inside totally smokes Edge as well. We talked Brian into at least trying Edge tonight just so he gave it a chance and make his decision by morning. If he chose to join Vibe we’d go sign for him and get him joined. Yes, the teens have to “join”. Their names are checked off on a list and their keys are reissued with Vibe cards.

Here’s a shot of Vibe:

91514.jpg

When we were looking around in Vibe a nice lady and her teenage son approached us. “You’re SweetPee, right?” That’s never happened to me before. “Yep, that’s me.” It was a sweet lady, Kelly, & her son, Cam, from our cruise group (from another forum). A week or so before we left on vacation everyone was posting pics of themselves and their families so we’d recognize each other. Well, we were recognized! We chatted a few minutes while the kids went wandering around the club. They headed on out but we had to wait for Chandler to get his Vibe key from the CMs.

It still wasn’t quite time for our stateroom to be ready for us so we made our way back to Guest Relations to see about getting another Wave phone and some anniversary buttons for Tracey & me. After seeing the teen clubs we figured the boys would be going in opposite directions from each other (Chandler wasn’t real keen on spending the cruise joined to his little brother at the hip). A Wave phone for each of the boys + 1 for us would be really helpful in keeping in contact with each other.

Again, for those who haven’t cruised with Disney yet, the Wave phones are sorta like cell phones that you use to communicate with each other onboard the ship and on Castaway Cay. Their size reminds me more of old-school cell phones...you know...like before flip phones were the thing. ((I know! Totally showing my age again!)) You can call or text on them which is soooo convenient especially when you have teens. Each stateroom has 2. Additional units can be rented at Guest Relations for some small fee, can’t remember how much at the moment. I want to say $3-$4/day. I wouldn’t entrust just anyone with a Wave phone, tho. If they’re lost or damaged Disney will charge you $250 per unit. Gotta be sure whoever has them will take care of them. Both our boys have iPhones (which we had them turn over to us when we boarded so we could turn them off and be certain we’d not have a surprise bill from AT&T after vacation). When we handed them the Wave phones we explained everything about them including the lost/damaged fee. Both were informed that if they wanted to go off on their own they had to take a Wave phone and be responsible for it. If they lost or damaged their phone they would be paying us the $250 fee from their hard-earned money (they both work regularly) when we got home.

Here’s a picture of the gorgeous...uh...mural, art, not sure what to call it because it’s just too coooool...behind the Guest Relations desk near where we walked aboard the ship earlier:

91515.jpg

It was probably near 12:45 or so by now. We’d all been taking turns carrying our carry-on bags all this time. Believe me, they weren’t light. We had our obvious stuff like my purse loaded with a little of everything, camera equipment, & Brian’s backpack of mysterious necessities (I’m still not sure what he carries in that thing). However, we were also carrying a bag with 40-some-odd mini-bottles of Malibu rum and another bag with 20 shakers of Zatarain’s seasoning. Those were items for our cruise group’s little gift exchange (called the Fish Extender, more on that to come). Food items and alcohol cannot be checked, remember? That stuff was heavy! Then we also had 2 fifth bottles of liquor for Tracey and me. Yeah. We were loaded...no pun intended! LOL!

We knew it would be getting close to time to go to our stateroom so we all walked up to Deck 7 by the stairway and decided to cop-a-squat and wait. Of course, as soon as we were parked with all our stuff the boys were overcome with the go-explore itch. We sent them on their way with Wave phones in hand while Tracey & I waited.

Waiting turned out to be fun in itself. Other nearby neighbors were also coming along to wait. We had spotted a big group of younger adults while in the terminal earlier. We guessed it was a big pre-wedding bash since there was a girl wearing bride mouse ears and a groom wearing top-hat mouse ears. Another couple in their party was wearing anniversary buttons. So this big group is now waiting near us and we’re listening to them talk about how they aren’t sleeping for 3 days, etc. One guy had a rolling suitcase that he mentioned contained “The Bar”. Tracey & I just kept smiling at each other. Eventually, of course, we struck up some conversation. We needed to know what room the bar was gonna be in! They were so funny!

Even tho the little rope thing was still blocking the entry to the hallway we saw passengers walk past. One from the 3-day-party group said, “Looks like we can go”, and he opened the rope and they all filed-in. Tracey and I just sorta looked at each other like, “We can?” We waited a few minutes to see if we heard any CMs fussing or saw them get shoo’d back out. Nope. So we grabbed all our stuff and headed down the hall to find 7616.

I don’t know who was more excited! We both sorta rushed in and started opening everything up and looking everything over. We were like kids in a candy store! It was so awesome! Tracey, of course, made a beeline for the verandah. I was more fascinated with the bathroom configuration, the closets, the desk, etc. Then I started taking pictures!

The stateroom reminded me a lot of being in a WDW deluxe resort room only smaller and cooler. You walk in the door and there’s like a narrow-ish hallway. Closet(s) on the right. Bathroom(s) on the left. Then the room opens up. See?

91516.jpg

That’s our queen size bed in front of me. There’s a small, wall-mounted nightstand on each side of the bed. You can see on the left the privacy curtain pulled back & secured. At night you can pull that curtain across and it partitions the room. Very nice. Further in on the left is the sofa that converts to a twin bed. There’s a chair just beyond the sofa. When the 3rd pull-down bed is down it’s like another twin bed directly above the sofa. In front of the sofa is a storage trunk that doubles as a coffee table. Very nice. Across from the sofa to the right is a loooooong desk. There’s a flat-panel tv mounted on a telescoping arm so it can be turned to so everyone can see it or you can push it over so you can lay in bed with the curtain closed and see it. Above the tv is a cabinet with storage. There’s also little shelves for storage right there, too. Further down that wall above the desk is a light-up mirror like a vanity would have and more shelves for storage. There’s a ledge that runs the length of the desk that has a single electrical outlet and light switches. Beneath the desk there’s drawers like a dresser would have and a mini-fridge. And, of course, straight out thru the sheers is the verandah. You can’t see it but the slider door is in the center.

I cannot begin to explain how awesome the stateroom was! I swear the thing had to be the brain-child of a team of women! Every inch of the place was so well-thought out. Storage is everywhere. The whole thing is built for living conveniently in a small space. It’s totally incredible. For instance, look at the amount of storage under the bed!

91517.jpg

There’s enough clearance to fit 6 large empty suitcases under there! It’s crazy! So many times I thought to myself, “They need to have these designers do the resort rooms!” Even the biggest WDW resort rooms we’ve been in haven’t had this much storage. It was wonderful!

Oh! And just in case you wondered what that was on the bed, that’s my box. Yep, you can send yourself a box on the ship. I was told you should only do 1 box per stateroom but I’ve heard some people send more. I only sent 1. What would I need to ship to myself? The rest of my gift exchange stuff, plastic insulated tumblers for mixing drinky-drinks, and other little essentials I wouldn’t need until we were on the cruise.

Moving on, I’d be totally remiss if I didn’t make a big fuss over the bathroom configuration. It was just sooooo cool! They need to do something like this at the resorts!!! Okay. We had the split bath configuration with the large round tub. Split bath. There’s 2 bathrooms (sorta) with 2 separate doors. The one on the left is what we called the “potty room”. In there you have the toilet (of course) and a sink area. Here’s the pics of that room:

See what I mean about shelves and storage everywhere?! You can’t see it but on the wall to the left of the toilet that’s opposite the vanity there’s hooks to hang stuff. Also, throughout the cruise we laughed and said they needed to have a recorded spiel that plays whenever you push the toilet flusher button before it actually does the flush: “Please stand clear of the lid. Por favor mantengase....” LOL! That thing flushes with a vengeance! The first several times it really startles ya! If I was a little kid I’d be scared to death of it!

The next bathroom is thru a separate door to the right of the potty room door. There’s another sink in here as well as a big, round bathtub and shower. The bathtub isn’t super deep but it’s pretty big around. I could’ve sat down in there if I wanted to. There’s a little recessed area where us ladies can sit down to shave our legs. There’s an adjustable hand-held shower head on the wall PLUS a big rain shower head mounted on the ceiling. Awesomeness!

Not trying to be all gross or TMI because I swear to you it’s a totally innocent thing...but Tracey & I usually shower together no matter where we are. I dunno why. It’s just something we’ve always done. No special ‘activities’ go on. I wash his back. He washes mine. Sometimes he’ll even wash my hair for me which is a nice thing because it’s a lot of work. It speeds up the time it takes to get ready to go somewhere, too. The only reason I’m telling you this is because even on this cruise we still were able to shower together. It was a bit cramped but we weren’t like knocking into each other or anything. We aren’t exactly small people, either. THAT is how big that shower was!

After I took my pics and we explored our room we got busy unpacking the suitcase. We still hadn’t gotten our other checked bag which was the hanging clothes bag we borrowed from my in-laws. We were a little worried. Being our first cruise we weren’t sure if our bags should’ve arrived together or what.

I had read other people’s experiences about getting in their rooms, meeting their wonderful room stewards right away, and having all sorts of details they had questions about handled by this person. Ours was nowhere to be found. We looked out in the hall several times. We saw nobody. I needed to find out about that hanging bag. It had all our dress clothes in it and we had early dinner.

We settled as much as we could then headed out to wander. We headed to the spa to see about getting a polish change on my toes because I wasn’t so thrilled with my current polish job and Tracey wanted me to do something in the spa. On the way we stopped to fill our tumblers so we could start on the first of our drinky-drinks. Mmmm....

Drinky-drinks in hand we looked around a bit. Holy smokes at the crowded pools! It was crazy! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I don’t think they could’ve gotten another kid in those pools if they’d had a barrel of Crisco and a shoe horn. When I looked at those pools all I could think was what a cespool they had to be with all those kiddies in there. Not for me. No way. No how!

This was by the landing zone for the Aqua Duck. Tracey was laughing at the large man in spandex behind him:

91527.jpg

When we got to the spa they wanted us to tour the place. Okay. All the while we’re workin’ on our drinks and Tracey is really gettin’ loose. I was just sorta floatin’ along. I knew he was feelin’ right when he let the acupuncture lady do a demo on him. The man is terrified of needles. LOL! After the tour we went to the reception desk to get that polish change scheduled. The girls said something about doing a Fire & Ice Pedicure. I opened my mouth to decline but Tracey beat me to the punch: “Oh yes! She’ll do that!” Okaaaaay...so she gets that scheduled for in the morning. Then she says something about couples massage. Again, before I can utter anything he’s all over it. “Oh yes. We’ll do that after!” I’m totally speechless. The man’s never even had a massage. She started into the whole list of frou-frou massages. This time I finally could interject with something, “Swedish.” God help us and the evils of the drinky-drinks. I know I had to have been feelin’ right, too, because I knew beforehand how much that stuff cost and I didn’t put up a fight. WooHOOOOO!

It was about 4:00, time to do the muster drill. You know, it’s where you would report in case of emergency. The instructions said to bring only your room keys, nothing else. We didn’t need to bring the life jackets that were in our closet in our room which was nice. Those things are pretty big. And square. Don’t look too comfy. We met the boys back at the stateroom then headed down for the drill. We left our drinky-drinks in the room. It was neat how they opened up all these hidden emergency and/or crew stairways that aren’t normally part of the guest areas. To get everyone to report they have you use these alternate routes because that would be how you would go if there was an emergency. We get down to deck 4 and find our spot. It’s the big letter on your room keys. They swipe each person’s room key then make everyone line up your family tallest to shortest single-file. We all have to scootch up close to the family next to us. The meeting spot is outside in the sweltering heat so you get reeeaally cozy with the families next to you. Of course little kids don’t find this all-too fun so you get crying and fussing all around. It felt like some sort of cruel joke. We were standing there a good while. We saw random guests sacheting past with drinks, etc. like they didn’t have to join in the fun. It kinda irritated me. Actually, I had the urge to shove one lady and her mother-load of crown jewels she was wearing right over the side. Just when you’re starting to discuss mutiny with your neighbors there’s a CM with a bull horn who says something but what was said I couldn’t tell you. He could’ve been telling us they’re enjoying our misery in the moment and if the ship goes down it’s every man for himself. I dunno. I couldn’t understand a word of it. Just a bunch of garbled mess that sounded like Charlie Brown’s teacher talking. Eventually he stopped talking. There was an announcement over the PA that said the drill was concluded. Then the orderly rows of people turned into a huuuuge mass of people shuffling towards 2 or 3 doorways. It reminded me of leaving the MK after Wishes. Where were all those hidden doorways and extra stairways that we just came through??? This is a big gripe I have and a suggestion for DCL: keep the extra passage-ways open for 15-20 minutes AFTER the muster drill so you don’t have every passenger onboard funneled into only 3 passage ways.

We made our way back to our stateroom. Guess what? Our hanging clothes bag arrived while we were mustering! We put all that stuff away and stored the bag. We grabbed our drinky-drink cups and headed up to deck 12 for sail-away. I don’t know where the boys went. They weren’t with us. We wandered decks 11 & 12 for a few minutes and took some pics:

A look up at the section of the Aqua Duck that swirls out past the edge of the ship over the water below:

91524.jpg

See? It’s over the edge!

91523.jpg

We made our way up to deck 12 to watch us push off from the pier. We could hear the sail away deck party and saw a little on the funnel-vision but
we were more interested with the scenery. We had no idea where the boys were. We did run back into Kelly who told us she had seen Chandler & Cam run off somewhere together. Cool.

While we sailed out I made sure to stay by the rail until we passed Fishlips which is where the webcam is. If you haven’t watched the ships sail out yet, it’s cool. They often zoom in on the people at the rails. If you’re going on a cruise, there’s no better way to get excited as you count down to your sail date. The webcam can be found at www.portcanaveralwebcam.com. I made sure to stay by the rail and wave my arms off. But then I later found out the web cam was down when we sailed out. Dangit!

As we sailed out we saw some manatees by some of the other docks. That was neat. I love manatees. Always have since I first saw them in person as a teenager at the marina where my best friend’s dad kept his sailboat.

I could’ve stood there for hours but Tracey reminded me we had like 20 minutes until dinner at Enchanted Garden. Yikes!

It was a mad rush to dress for dinner but we made it only a few minutes late. Thank goodness Tracey has such a keen sense of direction because we ran out our door and were in the elevator before the panic of not knowing where Enchanted Garden even was hit me. LOL!

So here’s where I got my introduction to cruise dining. Dress tonight was “cruise casual”. This was khakis & polos for the guys, a maxi-halter summer dress for me. When people gush about the food and dinners on their cruises it is NOT because there’s nothing to do but sit around eating all the time. No. Dinner in the dining rooms is more of an event in itself. That’s not a bad thing. Think about that. You actually dress for dinner. You gather your family together around a table in beautiful surroundings and a team of amazing people cater to your every whim. No, it’s not a single server. I said “team”. Each team consists of a Head Server, a Server, and an Assistant Server. There are “courses” and time is spent taking in the entirety of the experience. This time is a wonderful opportunity unto itself to spend talking and enjoying each other’s company. I’m the most anti-formality person I know and I hate to be required to “dress” for anything. However, dinners on the cruise were a true delight and something I looked forward to each day.

With that said, we met our wait staff tonight. Our head server was Fitz, server was Ali, and assistant server was Raluca. The head server we only would see once or twice when he’d pass our table to make sure we were enjoying ourselves but we always saw him moving about in the service area working and overlooking things. The server is the main guy. He takes orders, makes sure things are perfect, helps you make choices, etc. etc. Then the assistant takes care of all the drinks making sure no glasses are ever empty or watered-down. She’s making sure you have the proper flatware or utensils, bringing condiments, making sure things are perfect, etc. I’m not sure about other cruise lines but with Disney your wait staff are yours for your whole trip. When you rotate to each restaurant they rotate with you. The big perk in this is that they get to know you and what you like. As the trip goes on they become a welcome part of your cruise and like family. You’ll see when I get to other dinners just how awesome having these people stay with you really is!

We had a 4-top table so we didn’t have to share with any other families. Some of the seating is multiple families at a big table. That wouldn’t have been an issue for us since we love to meet new people.

We rushed down and got sat at our table, #109. Raluca and Ali introduced themselves and we were just dazzled. We made sure to tell them right away that we had never cruised before so they would understand if we didn’t know how things should go. They were so good to us and proved to be a fabulous wealth of tips in the days to come.

We ordered our drinks and started to relax. The ship was really moving now. I guess we finally were still enough to notice the motion. When Raluca brought our drinks she was very concerned about Brian. In all the days excitement I forgot to break out the seasick meds. I had gotten prescription patches from the doctor and bought a bottle of Bonine (meclazine) just in case. We weren’t sure how the kids would react to a ship. They did just fine on Tracey’s bass boat even when the water was real rough. It’s crazy, though, how we were sitting at the same table as him and didn’t even really notice how pale his face was. Yikes! We asked him what he was feeling. He said he felt a little icky, not sick, just kinda weird. He said, “Gosh, the boat mooooves.” Uh...yeah....he needs meds. We sent him back to the room to get the meclazine. I gave him a tablet, handed one to Chandler (who now was saying he felt a little weird), and I took one. The only “weird” I felt was my buzz from earlier leaving me but I wasn’t taking any chances.

I wish I’d taken pics of our dinner. It was all heavenly! I had the lobster raviolli I had been reading about, the spinach salad, prime rib, and dessert trio. Oh yes. It was all dang good.

At the end of the meal we sorta sat there basking in the glory of it all. We weren’t sure what the procedure was. Think about it: whenever you eat in a restaurant there’s a check or some sort of final thing that has to be done. It just seemed like we needed to wait for some final thing even though we knew the meal was included in the price of the cruise and we hadn’t ordered any alcoholic beverages with dinner. Ali checked on us again and we politely asked if they need anything else from us before we leave. Nope. Ali wished us a good night and said he looked forward to seeing us tomorrow at the Royal Palace. Wow. Just wow.

We had the main seating for dinner. 5:45 is the dinner time but we didn’t get sat down until closer to 6. We left around 7:45 or so. Everyone headed back to the stateroom to get out of our dinner clothes and get back into our shorts. The boys both wanted to go do their thing instead of join Tracey & me for the show. They took their Wave phones and off they went.

Tracey & I put away the dress clothes then headed out to the Walt Disney Theater to see the 8:30 showing of the Golden Mickeys.

I gotta say, the show was impressive! The pre-show was fun with the whole red-carpet interviews with the children. The show itself was like what people call a ‘Broadway’ show (I’ve never been to a ‘Broadway’ show but that’s what everyone calls it). Before the show when the cruise director was on-stage yammering on and on and on...yeah, that part we could’ve done without. After a while you start to wonder does this woman enjoy hearing herself talk or what? A lot of it is jabber about the spa, etc., stuff you would have to pay extra for, so it comes off like she’s advertising shamelessly. I dunno. Just didn’t like that part. We liked that the captain of the ship addressed the guests in person before the show and various officers were introduced in person. That was a nice touch to a first-time cruiser. It was all well worth the wait, tho.

During the show I could really feel the ship moving. The swaying of the curtain between numbers was cool. Tracey said he noticed some of the performers move to maintain balance. It wasn’t like crazy rock’n & roll’n. It was enough that you were aware. Still, I liked feeling the motion of the ship. To me it was an added element of fun. I know, I’m nuts.

When the show ended we were on cloud 9 with the warm-n-fuzzies. Truly. What an amazing production!!! It sure knocked our socks off! Loved every moment!

After the show we hit the shops. This was a big moment for me! In the months leading up to our cruise I had dug out all my old Coach bag sets that I haven’t used since I started collecting Disney Dooney & Bourkes, meticulously cleaned everything, then sold it all on eBay to generate the funds for my special purchase: a new, exclusive Disney Cruise Line Dooney & Bourke bag & wristlet in the special cruise sketch pattern. Oh yes! This is what I was looking forward to! I went in the shop but wasn’t exactly pleased with the print arrangement on the few bags that were out. I asked a sweet CM and she went “down” to bring out more for me to choose from. She returned with 10 more of the style bag I wanted for me to choose from. Awesome! Then I started sifting through all the wristlets that were out. Again, not pleased with the print placement. My CM friend ran back “down” and brought back probl’ly 15 to 20 wristlets for me to choose from. Amazing!!!! I made my purchase in absolute bliss! Here’s a pic of my bag & wristlet that I took after we got home:

Tracey & I perused all the merchandise in all the shops. Oh my! We could sooooo blow our budget here! There’s so much killer stuff to be had!

We wound up our shopping without any other purchases (yet) and headed up to our room. We had work to do! We decided we wanted to get our Fish Extender gifts delievered!

Remember the cruise group gift exchange thing called the ‘Fish Extender’?! Here’s your crash course!

On the classic Disney ships the little metal clippy thing just outside everyone’s door is the shape of a fish. Now they’re different things but the name stuck. Basically you make or buy a pocket organizer and hang it from your stateroom’s “fish”...hence the name “Fish Extender”. Here’s our door with the extender out:

91626.jpg

People in the cruise group who wish to participate add the names and ages of everyone in their stateroom to the list along with their stateroom number. Then you make or put together little gifts for each person in the exchange. You can do as little or as much as you want. You can do something as just a family gift, do multiple gifts, make things for each person, etc. You can do multiple gifts to give out multiple times during the length of the trip. Spend as little or as much as you want. It’s all up to you. No minimums required. Me being the crafty sort, this was juuuust my thing so we were IN! Here’s what all I made and/or put together:

Every single person, regardless of age, got a Ellie badge. I love the movie ‘Up!’. I made the grape soda caps, punched the holes for the pins, and created my little packaging:

91627.jpg

91628.jpg

Each family got a shaker of Zatarains:

91635.jpg

Each tween & teen got a drawstring backpack stenciled and heat-set with the Disney Cruise Line logo. Boys got black, girls got blue:

91631.jpg

Other children got a pouch I stenciled with 3 Disney pins for trading. Here’s a pic of what the boys’ looked like:

91629.jpg

Each adult got a little bottle of rum:

91630.jpg

We had just 1 toddler girl that I gave a princess sippy cup to but I didn’t take a pic of it. Pretty standard.

So Tracey & I loaded down some tote bags with all these treasures and set out with our list, a deck map, and our tumblers each w/our pre-measured liquor inside. First we made all our deliveries on the decks below and including ours. We were famished so we went back up to deck 11 to the drink station to fill up our tumblers. Sipping along, we finished the rest of our deliveries. Whew! Between the hiking all over the decks to deliver the goods and wonderful drinks we were enjoying, we ended up pretty dang worn out.

It was a looong day full of excitement. The boys both made their way back to the room. Tracey & I climbed into our super-comfy cruise bed at about midnight. I think I *heart* this cruise thing.

Friday, 9/16: Butchers, Breakdowns, & Pirates, Ahoy!!!

9161.jpg

Good morning!

Remember my lovely hubby who signed me up for that Fire & Ice Pedicure??? Yeah. That appointment is for 8:00 this morning. Good grief! I set my alarm for 6:30 a.m. so I’d have time to enjoy some breakfast on our verandah before I was due up at Senses. Before I turned-in for bed last night I filled out my little breakfast card and hung it outside on our stateroom door. I wanted coffee and fresh fruit delivered between 7 & 7:30 but I think it was actually a tad early. Just as I was drying off from my shower there was a gentle knock at the door. Oh no! I don’t want the whole family to wake up! I wrapped a towel firmly around me, grabbed some ones from the stack in the safe, had the tray brought in, and tipped the server. It would’ve been nice to have more covering me than the stupid towel. Oh well. I’ll bet they see worse on a regular basis. Thankfully, the towels on the cruise are nice and big!

I got myself dressed. Tracey got up, too. We sat out on the verandah enjoying the view. We were approaching Nassau this morning. Neat.

A few minutes before 8 I headed up to the Senses Spa, deck 11 forward. See?! I’m starting to get my bearings sorta. LOL! I signed in and filled out the little questionaire thing. This was on the wall in the little loungy area. I thought it was really serene:

9162.jpg

This next part is kinda long but, especially the gals out there, you gotta read this. I’m still in total disbelief!

I only waited a few minutes when Johnretta, my pedi-girl, came to get me. I’m never sure what to call the nail chicks. Nail techs? I dunno. Anywhoo, I was taken into the big room where nails and hair get all did-up. There was another lady about my age getting started on a nice pedi as well. I took my seat on the throne (it’s like up high, feels like a throne) and that’s where the landslide disaster of a pedicure began. First, I soaked. Nice. The views from this room are totally fabulous and I could see us continuing closer in to Nassau. Very relaxing. A few other people were moving in & out of the room. It appeared the salon manager was getting her hair done this morning. She was just a short distance away. Johnretta took her spot in front of me and got started. She removed my old polish and started trimming the cuticles of each toe. Pretty run-of-the-mill. When she got to my big toe on my right foot is where the butchering began. I don’t know what the heck this chick thought she was trimming but she took a nice chunk out of my toe at the base of my toenail. Not just the stupid cuticle. I winced & flinched so she left that spot alone. For now. She went to trimming other areas working towards the now bleeding wound. Good Gawd, woman! There’s nothing left to trim there but still she kept digging and digging. I bit my lip not wanting to screech and totally kill the serene atmosphere of the entire spa. I mean, I do want to at least sorta come off as being classy-n-stuff. I think she ended up hacking my flesh back to the first knuckle. It. Frickin’. Hurt. She procedes to file and buff each nail as pedi’s usually go. All the while, that wounded toe was stinging something fierce. When she got to the bad toe she must have not felt she had removed enough flesh yet because she then started filing and filing and buffing and buffing right on the sore. When she finished I was bleeding. Bleeding! Cut me open and now I’m bleeding!!! She didn’t act like anything was wrong at all. Without a word Johnretta, whom we’ll now refer to as ‘The Butcher‘, got up, left, and returned with a bottle of something. I have no idea what it was. She fumbled with the tip of this squirt bottle of mystery substance for a few minutes. Then, get THIS! She glances over her shoulder at the salon manager to see that she had her head back in the wash bowl and wouldn’t be looking. She quickly unpins her name badge from her uniform, pokes a hole in the top of the mystery substance bottle, wipes the tip of the pin with her fingers, then pins it back on her shirt. She picks up the bottle and squirts whatever it is on the bleeding spot on my toe, places the corner of a towel over the top, then holds pressure. Oh. Mystery substance is a medicine. Well, I hope it’s a medicine. All this happened without her uttering a word to me. No apologies. No asking if I’m okay. Didn’t ask if I had any allergies. Not a single word. At this point the toe feels much better (guess the mystery substance was an antiseptic) and I’m mildly entertained at the sneakiness of this girl, how she did all this as if nobody in the room saw it. Me included. Then the pedicure continues. She starts working on the caloused skin but now she also wants to talk. “What do you put on the cracks in your heels?” I told her what my dermatologist has instructed me. “Oh no. That’s wrong. What you need is....” which is where Dr. Butcher who knows better than a dermatologist starts peddling the spa’s overpriced products. Nice. When I could get a word in edge-wise I let her know that I’m a pretty busy woman and don’t really have time to soak or apply products or whatever twice a day. If I did what my doctor has instructed me my heels would be just fine. Whatever. When she was done with that she started rubbing on my calves and shins with some abbrasive substance which would soon be followed by some oil of some sort. She asks, “How do you exfoliate your skin?” “Um, I don’t. I do good to get to the tanning bed to add some color a couple times a week. I scrub good in the shower.” The Butcher: **siiiiigh** “Kelly Kelly Kelly. You need to be making time to pamper yourself. You muuuuust exfoliate for your skin to tan better. Don’t you know that?” Seriously. She’s sighing and lecturing me the way a weary-worn mother would their not-yet-mature-enough-to-understand child. I bit my lip. I totally wanted to let her have it! What do you think I’m paying to have a pedicure for?!?! To pamper myself. Not a lecture! I’ve been in my skin for a long time and I’ve never had any problems with my tanning. Shut up. But then she was on to trying to pitch more products. I do believe I rolled my eyes a few times but I did good at not going off on her. I managed to stay tight-lipped thru the polishing, etc. Paying was a total insult-to-injury on this one. I have never in my entire life had a nail person injure me! The pedicure wasn’t even that great. The chicks at the local nail shops do a waaaaaay better job, they don’t remove chunks of my toe, they don’t lecture or carry on condescendingly towards me, and they don’t try to sell me overpriced crap that I don’t need. I may not be able to understand everything they say and, yeah, sometimes I’d swear they’re totally cracking jokes about me in Vietnamese. But I can walk without a limp when I leave and it doesn’t cost me $100 to have my toe stripped back to the first joint.

Tracey came in the room towards the very end of the torture session. He met me for our couples massage. It was his first massage ever and he thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. I, on the other hand, did not. I was fuming from the whole pedicure thing and couldn’t get relaxed to save my life. I was uncomfortable laying on my stomach which, I know, is my own fault. It’s the price I pay for having a new set of girls installed a couple years back.** Ever lay down on an object the size of a softball? There’s no comfortable way to do that. I’ve had a few massages since my surgery that I got kinda comfy for with creative placement of pillows but it wasn’t happening today. Plus, laying on my stomach meant my feet were laid out flat on the massage table puting direct pressure where I now had a nasty sore on my toe. My massage wasn’t all that great either. I’ve had several professional massages in my life. This was probably the crappiest. The girl working on me just wasn’t very good. Wanna hear the icing on the cake??? Before we left we got to hear another sales pitch for more of their products so we could massage each other every day. Uh, yeah. Who has time for THAT?! I left the spa so thoroughly ed off I just don’t even know how to describe it. We dropped over $400 in there for the priviledge of a stupid sales pitch. I didn’t think any part of it was worth half what we paid but whatever. My advice: get your nails did and massages done before you leave home at places you know are good at prices that aren’t inflated where you don’t have to refuse frou-frou products every 5 minutes.

**I mention the installation of 'the girls' loosely because I'm not one of those who tries to pretend they're what God gave me. They're not. From the time I scheduled the surgery to today I'm always the first person to crack a joke or make funny references. Why not? Right?**

Enough grumbling.

Tracey was floating on a cloud. He felt soooo good. He raved about whatever that chick did to his back with her elbows. Geez, 18 years and and all it woulda took was a good elbow job. Who da thunkit???

Tracey wanted to show me some of the stuff he had been looking at earlier while I was having my toe hacking. Here’s some pics of Nassau, us, and the Carnival Sensation right next to us from up on deck 12 forward:

Not sure when we took this but I think it’s from deck 4. The Carnival Sensation isn’t there so I’m not sure. It’s all a blur to me know:

9163.jpg

I should note that it was weird being so close to other ships. Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas would pull in on the other side of us, too. That’s one BIIIIIG ship! Dwarfs the Dream! When the other ships pulled in and were in port the people on them would line the decks just looking at our ship like it was a sight to see. Tracey said he saw people get off the Oasis and take pics of the Dream from the pier. Weird. I guess I’m just as bad taking pics of their ships. LOL! It was easy to see that we were on a really incredible ship.

I had a terrific headache and was pretty tired. We went to the stateroom so I could lay down a bit and take some Motrin. While we were there Chandler came in. It was getting towards lunch time. It made sense that maybe my headache correlated with how hungry I was. I hadn’t had a thing since the little bit of fruit and coffee I had early in the morning. We called Brian on his Wave phone but he was having too much fun to stop for lunch. Okee-dokee!

Not wanting to deal with a bunch of people at the troughs at Cabanas we consulted our Navigator to see what other options we had for lunch. The Royal Palace was serving so we headed there....deck 4, midship, just off the atrium. We arrived a few minutes before opening so we took some pics to kill time.

Tracey isn’t so good with this camera. Pardon the fuzzy pics:

Oh! Interesting little tidbit I haven’t mentioned! Okay, in the first picture above where we’re in front of the RP doors look to the right of Chandler. See the little alcove with the cabinet? There’s an identical one directly opposite this, too. Now, do you see the tubs sitting on the counters? That’s antibacterial cleansing wipes. Every time you went into a restaurant there’d be a couple CMs standing very close to the entrance holding these tubs. You’d take a wipe, wipe your hands, then deposit the used wipe into a garbage can. Those cabinets are where the garbage cans are with a hole in the top of the countertop there to deposit the used wipes. Also, at the walk-up food areas and the drink stations there’s tubs of wipes. Wipes everywhere! As a mom it’s kinda neat to see the extra efforts to keep the spread of germs under control in close quarters. Cool, huh?

Looking up:

91613.jpg

See all the characters??? It’s amazing how everywhere there’s Disney character and fun infused while still maintaining such timeless elegance:

91614.jpg

My honey:

91615.jpg

Wow. Chandler stinks at focusing this camera, too.

91617.jpg

Eventually it was chow-time and the doors opened. WooHooo! Ugh! The attention to detail everywhere just totally kills me! I was so dazzled by the inlaid floors:

91618.jpg

In the center of the entire dining room there’s this one biiiiig round table with the coolest light above it. Do you see the glass slippers that surround the light? Man! I wanna know what a girl has to do to sit at THIS table with the cool kids and the VIPs! I believe next time we go I’m going to make it a point to eat lunch here again and ask if I can sit HERE!

91619.jpg

We were seated at a table near a porthole, not our usual table #109. We had a lovely view so it was a nice change of pace. Also, our wait staff was not our usual but we did see Ali working in another area of the restaurant. It was neat to see if another server would be as good. He was but I totally forgot to write down his name. Anywhoo, the details just keep coming. Maybe it’s a girl thing to notice such, but just look at the pretty design on the silverware:

I had the citrus fruit cocktail which was refreshing especially being as hungry as I was. For my main dish I had the turkey melt sandwich on wheat panini with extra cheese which was quite possibly the best sandwich I have ever eaten in my entire life. It was served with steak fries and a tasty slaw. Get this! I asked for ketchup for my fries. Not only did our server bring it to the table, he offered to plate it for me. If it had been a plastic squirt bottle of ketchup I don’t think I’d be near as impressed. It was the good ol’ glass bottle and this was straight-up skill!

91621.jpg

Seeeeee???? Details! Nothing is spared!

When it came time for dessert I could not decide what I wanted because everything looked so scrumptious. I narrowed it down to 2 selections and ordered both. Why not? I didn’t write down the names but I remembered to take pics. Believe me, no words can possibly encompass the amazing flavors on these 2 plates:

91622.jpg

91623.jpg

You can sorta see it if you look closely, the dishes were perfect for the dining room they grace. I’m telling you, the amount of detail on the ship is just mind-boggling. There’s no way to catch it all. I guess as a girl I’m predestined to be completely enthralled with the fact that Disney had special flatware and dinnerware made for each dining room to compliment the theme seamlessly.

On our way out I had to get another pic. Killer, I tell you!

91624.jpg

My headache had eased and I was feeling a bit better. I’d like to say I felt fabulous but I wasn’t. I was a giant wad of raging hormones and my emotions were totally all over the place. I believe this afternoon I could’ve given my teenagers a run for their money. Tracey and I were doing some wandering and Chandler was back off doing what he does. I know my dear husband could tell I wasn’t completely happy and, bless his heart, he really was trying to get me to come around. At one point we were up on deck 5 near the atrium when he asked if I wanted to go check out the future cruise offerings. This is where I broke. I just sort shook my head.

“Why? Don’t you want to go again? Aren’t you having a good time?”

Big ol’ fat tears welled up in my eyes (which made absolutely no sense at all) and I choked out, “I don’t know. It’s all going by so fast. Too fast. It feels like we just got here yet it feels half over and I haven’t done anything I wanted to.”

“What do you want to do?”

“I dunno.”

“How do you not know?”

“I don’t know because I feel so clueless and lost. I don’t know where anything is. You always know where to go and what direction but I’m clueless. I can’t even figure out which way is which. Forward. Aft. By the time I figure it all out we’ll be leaving and I won’t have done anything.”

I had me a good ol’ boo-hoo fest. Pathetic. I know and I agree. I could easily omit that entire bit from my trip report but how honest a writer would that make me? Vacation isn’t always perfect bliss 100% of the time. Mother Nature doesn’t consult with the family calendar before she springs hormone hell week on ya so sometimes you end up in the most wonderful place on earth feeling like someone just ran over your dog.

Tracey is an angel. He hugged me and let me get my boo-hoo out then we walked slowly while he comforted me. He had some good points that really do make sense.

I don’t remember ever not knowing my way around WDW. I’ve gone there my whole life so there’s never been the confusing lost feeling. Direction is not something that is innate in me the way it is with him and with Chandler. I have to figure it out. Not only was the Dream a whole new setting for us, the daily rhythm of cruising was all brand spankin’ new, too. We were on the learning curve. Instead of trying to figure out how to find my way thru my to-do list I should be rolling with whatever comes, experience the cruise, and relax. From that point on, that’s exactly what I tried to do: relax and soak it in.

I was definitely feeling better now. I stopped to take a pic of the amazing chandelier in the atrium. Everyone takes pictures of the thing but, honestly, no picture could ever fully capture the amazing piece of art this thing is:

91625.jpg

We wandered and I took a few pics:

I believe this is near the aft elevators on deck 11. Or I could be completely wrong. Tammy? Holly? Do y’all remember where Nigel is?

91636.jpg

This had to be one of my favoritest paintings in one of the stairways. I can’t remember which stairway it was but every time I passed this picture I fell in love all over again:

91637.jpg

This is definitely in Cabanas. I’m sure of this one! These look like they’re made of sand:

91638.jpg

We hope to see this castle in person late next year instead of WDW’s Cinderella’s Castle:

Tracey’s folks sailed on this ship w/his brother Kacey’s family this past April. The Oasis of the Seas. Did you know they have 2 rock climbing walls, a zip line, and a high dive show on that thing?!?! Holy cow!

91640.jpg

Atlantis in the distance:

91641.jpg

No, we didn’t get off the ship at all in Nassau. I’ve read a lot that there’s tons of people in the port that wait for the cruise ship people to arrive then try to get them to buy what they have or ride in their cab or whatever. It’s described as a run of dodging and saying “No thanks” about 400 times in a row. I read that there’s cheap crap at the Straw Market which was still torn up from the hurricane. We weren’t paying the big bucks to go to Atlantis. None of the other excursions really appealed. We just wanted to spend time enjoying the ship. We weren’t the only ones. I’d say easily 3/4 of the passengers onboard didn’t get off the ship. If it weren’t for Atlantis I’d wonder why the heck Disney even bothers to port in Nassau at all.

Anyway...more wandering. We met Remy! I kinda felt bad for the guy. One other couple was in front of us to meet him. After we left there was nooooobody!

91642.jpg

After we met Remy the other reason for my insane emotional outburst earlier became quite apparent. I was absolutely beat. All the staying up late & getting up early was really wearing on me. We headed back to our stateroom to take a nice nap. We needed it!

All too soon we woke up and needed to get dressed for dinner. More things we learned on our cruise: the drawback to main dinner seating was how early you had to start getting ready. It cuts into the afternoon! Booooo!!! We made a big to-do about switching to the main seating because of Tracey’s heartburn/reflux issues. I wanted him to be able to sleep laying down at night. We’ve decided next time we’ll do 2nd seating and he can double or triple his meds. LOL!

Tonight is Pirate Night! Aaaaarrrr!!!!!

The boys came back to the room and we all got ready for Pirate Night. We kept our get-ups super casual and understated. There were a few groups who went all out in really great costumes. Then, of course, there were plenty still who just wore whatever. I know the normal ‘cruise casual’ thing...no shorts, blah blah blah, but this was Pirate Night so I treated it waaaay more laid back. We were absolutely not the minority either. I ordered the boys each a different white skull & cross-crutches t-shirt ala the old Mtv show made famous by Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, and Bam Margera (to name a few). The boys are big fans. Well, okay, Tracey & I have watched the movies more than once each... LOL! Tracey & I sported matching tshirts to represent our generation: skulls & cross-swords. “Goonies Never Say Die”. Oh yes. We shall represent! Heeeeey yoouuu guuuuys!!!!!

First we took a pic with Jack Sparrow outside the Walt Disney Theater. It was fun to meet him. No, I didn’t have a picture taken with my camera. It was a good pic but we opted not to buy it at $20 a pop. When we were leaving he said, “Nice to have met you all...” then he leaned over towards me and said, “...especially you, Love.” Great character! Normally I’m not one of the throngs who go all gaga over Jack Sparrow. Not at all. There’s really no appeal to me. But...okay...I’m like this old married woman who hasn’t been on the receiving end of even innocent flirting for a really loooooong time so, character or not, I was all giddy and melty. I may or may not have given a little passing thought to throwing myself at the man and having my way right there! LOL! Raging ball of hormones, I tell you!

As I said before, dinner was at the Royal Palace.

91644.jpg

Remember how I said there’s a big perk to having your wait team rotate restaurants with you? They know before you get there what you like to drink so they’ll have it waiting for you! The boys each had cokes with big ol’ dishes of stem cherries. Here’s my pirates:

91646.jpg

The picture the roaming photographer took during dinner tonight was pretty good so we ended up buying it. My hair was in 2 braids w/my pirate bandana tied into a headband. It was really cute!

91645.jpg

Dinner was good but I didn’t take pics. Sorry! Tracey had us all hurrying to eat and we weren’t allowed to order dessert. He made our apologies early to Ali & Raluca for us running out so fast. He wanted to be up on deck 12 forward to watch us pull out from the port. I’m telling you, the man is out of his mind geeking out over the ship’s doings. I’m kinda glad we hurried, tho. It was so pretty to see the sunset from up top.

First out was the Oasis. It was really cool to watch her. She backed up from the pier then did a pirouette right in front of us so she’d be facing forward to sail away.

Another reason I’m glad we went up top for our sailing away was because we bumped into someone else I recognized from our cruise group! ((I was a schmuck and missed the sailing day meets...more stuff I missed)) I took this pic of my guys:

91650.jpg

Cruise group friends took this pic of all of us: (I’m so bad with names! I'm gonna give it the ol' college try and say it was Debbie and Willie that we enjoyed visiting with.)

91651.jpg

We chit chatted a bit but they needed to head off to get ready for dinner. They had 2nd seating. I’m glad we bumped into them. They were on the 1st leg of a back-to-back on the Dream. They thanked us for the rum and said they enjoyed it. We offered to drop off any leftovers we had the last night for them to enjoy on the DVC members cruise after we disembarked. Now we didn’t have to carry all that liquor back off the ship if we didn’t drink it all. WooHOO!

More interesting stuff! The Dream had been backed up to the pier when we docked. Pulling out was a straight shot. Just as we started to move this little-ish boat came zooming right out towards us. In the picture he’s on the right. I guess it was a military or police vessel that came flying towards him full speed to intercept. He’s on the left. I kid-you-not, we thought he was going to ram that boat full speed after it crossed riiiight in front of our ship. It was crazy! Above all the noise and even with the wind blowing we could hear the loud speaker from the police/military boat totally berating the other boat people, “Are you f***ing blind?!?!” We were standing there watching all this with countless other people and we all had the same reaction: “Daaaaaaaang! Lookit that!!!!” I wish I’d video’d it but I’m not that fast at changing the camera mode. It all happened really fast!

91652.jpg

Sailing off into the sunset:

91653.jpg

Chandler wanted to go do Chandler things but Brian was curious enough to stick around with us to go watch Villain’s Tonight with us. Tracey & I fixed ourselves some drinky-drinks to take with us. We gave the upper level seating a try tonight. It was a nice view but we were under an air vent, I think. Brian was like a people-popsicle in no time. I felt so bad for him! Here we are finding our seats:

91654.jpg

My failures trying to take pics of the stage and one of the side screens pre-show:

91655.jpg

91656.jpg

My review of Villain’s. Well, it wasn’t the Golden Mickeys, that’s for sure. More ya-ya’ing from the cruise director before the show. Yaaawn. The show itself was okay. It was entertaining enough. I can see where the references to recent celeb gossip can be awkward or in-contrast to what you’d normally see in a Disney show. Tracey & I rolled with it and laughed. I think if either of us had any predisposed impression of what the Hades character is then maybe we would’ve liked it less. I’ve not seen Hercules. I don’t know if Tracey has or not. At a few points the show seemed to drag. Yzma and Kronk totally make the show! If for no other reason, go see Yzma & Kronk! These are 2 characters that Disney could do sooooo much with. I would totally sign up for a trip to Yzmopolis! LOL!

After the show we high-tailed it back up the stairs to our room to dump more liquid gold into our tumblers. Look what appeared while we were gone?!

We hurried on up to the drink station to mix the drinky-drinks some more. Mmmm.... Ali told us during dinner to hit deck 12 starboard for a great view of the fireworks so we went there to scope out our spot. This is up on deck 12 forward looking aft:

91659.jpg

We chit-chatted with another family we had met in the terminal. The oldest gentleman, the grandfather (although he didn’t seem really old enough to be), was a trip. He’d been hittin’ the drinky drinks, too. Everytime we’d see him in passing during the cruise he’d holler out “Beaumont!” because that’s the biggest city we live near. Such a trip! They had little kiddies so the adults from their family along with the 4 of us made sure to keep our spot at the rail so their little ones could get a good view when it was time. We could see several other cruise ships in the distance around us. Perhaps they wanted to see the show, too???

I present to you for your viewing pleasure: Bucaneer Blast!

It was a nice little show. I love that it’s all set to a score the way Disney does. It wasn’t Wishes or Illuminations. I mean, come on, the pyro is being shot from a ship. Did you know that Disney is the only cruise line who can shoot fireworks from their ship?! Impressiiiiiive! We did note that our position wasn’t too terribly far off from Nassau. Our guess was they stayed relatively close just in case. Cool beans.

That’s it for the pics tonight even though the night was still kinda young. LOL! Skip forward if you want. I understand.

When the fireworks concluded we headed back to our stateroom to suit up for a run on the Aqua Duck. We waited about 20 minutes including a lifeguard station change by the CMs but it wasn’t so terrible. We had the music from the pirate dance party to listen to and the Funnelvision to watch while we waited. The water was cold! It was a fun ride. The boys both said it was more hype than anything. They thought it was too slow. I guess maybe at night the views that would normally make it awesome were lost on them. I, on the other hand, totally was geeked out looking straight down at the water below when we swirled around over the edge of the ship. LOL! If the water wasn’t cold enough the air once you got off the Aqua Duck was downright frigid. We scurried over to the towels shivering like mad and ran straight back to the room to get back into our dry clothes.

Tracey & I stayed up until 2 a.m. doing laundry. I know, right? What is it with us and keeping all our laundry washed??? We’re like crazy with the laundry!!! I will say, there’s nothing in the world like being propped up in bed between loads and being able to order Mickey’s Premium bars from room service. It took all of 5 minutes from the time I hung up the phone to when they were on a tray in front of me. This is when I found the movies on the tv, too. They have a whole library of Disney movies (live action & animated) as well as non-Disney movies that you can take your pick of on the tv. If you turn off a movie the next time you come back to it you can resume where you left off, start over, or just find another movie. How stinkin’ cool is that?! I’m telling you, even with the hormone explosion I’m finding this Disney cruise thing to be da-bomb!

Saturday, 9/17: Run hard. Play hard. The party animal emerges.

9171.jpg

9172.jpg

I opened my eyes and peeked at the clock. 5:00 a.m. I glanced over at Brian’s bunk. He was still dead asleep. I’d only been asleep 3 hours at this point so I closed my eyes again hoping and praying the kid wouldn’t wake up until at least 9. Why? Because Brian & I had been running together all summer long with the goal of running the Castaway Cay 5k on Castaway Cay day. We live in a coastal climate that’s not much different than what you find at WDW in the summer. It’s hot, humid, and can be deadly. This summer was particularly brutal. In order to get our run finished before the sun was up high enough to kill us we got up at 5 a.m. all summer long. We worked hard and suffered thru a lot. 3 weeks before vacation Brian finally told us about the problems he’d been having with his knees. He told us they hurt really bad when he ran but also when he wasn’t running. He said the aching kept him up at night. Tracey did some reading and we figured it was most likely brought on by overuse. Knee pain is actually pretty common in active teens so we didn’t want to overreact. Before running him straight to the doctor we wanted to see if rest and anti-inflamatories (such as ibuprofen) would help. So for the 3 weeks leading up to our trip Brian was not allowed to go for any runs. He had to rest. We promised him if he felt up to it he could still run the CC5k but only if it improved. He had been feeling much better and was still set on running on the island. We had been trying to talk him down from it. The run didn’t start until like 9:00 a.m. and we were in the Bahamas. If we thought the heat past 7 a.m. at home was a killer, 9 a.m. closer the equator wasn’t going to be an improvement. Nothing could sway him. Brian was determined he was going to run the 5k on the island. Because I’d had so little sleep and didn’t relish the idea of running in full-on melt-your-face-off heat, I was reeeaaallly hoping Brian would stay asleep until it was too late to make it to the start. I closed my eyes and fell back into a deep sleep.

At about 6:30 Tracey and I woke up to the bed shaking like it was sitting on top of a washing machine that was on the spin cycle. WTH?!?! We looked around trying to figure out what the heck had the entire ship shaking like this. Tracey looked towards the verandah and saw the sunlight barely peeking thru the curtain edges. “We’re here! We’re pulling in!” He leapt from our bed, ran to the verandah, ripped the curtains opened, and ran outside. He called back into the room, “Yep! We’re there! That’s what it is!!!” Of course the explosion of light in the room woke the boys even if the vibration hadn’t. Brian popped up raring to go. I coulda pitched that husband of mine over the rail. Jacka$$. I wanted Brian to sleep. IIIII wanted to sleep!

There was no talking the kid down. A promise was a promise. I got out of my cozy bed, threw on my running clothes, braided my hair, brushed my teeth, and we headed up to Cabanas to put some fuel in the tanks. Chandler was tired and didn’t feel like getting up yet so he stayed in bed. After breakfast we returned to our room to grab a camera and see if Chandler was up to coming out on the island with us. Nope. He said he didn’t feel so swooft. Okee-dokee. We left him in bed while the 3 of us headed down to deck 1 to get off the ship. Tracey wanted to come with us to take pics. How sweet of him! We ended up being the 2nd family to step off the ship.

We are here.

9173.jpg

Island pics on our way to the 5k meeting spot:

9175.jpg

9176.jpg

9177.jpg

We just got here and it’s already scorchin’ hot. This must be the start:

91710.jpg

The island itself looked better than I thought it would considering the hurricane hit it took only weeks before our arrival. The vegetation was only slightly burnt-looking. Remember how concerned I was that the vegetation would be all rotting and stinking from the salt-water inundation? It wasn’t as brutal as the stench in the marshes near us post-hurricane but I could still smell it. Thank goodness for island breezes. I wasn’t nauseated from being outside which was a relief. That smell is one I’ll never forget.

We stood around waiting for whatever was supposed to happen next to happen. We’ve never run any running event, even not-really-events like the CC5k. It’s more of a fun-run than anything. Eventually a CM showed up and handed out bibs to the participants. I don’t look real happy, do I?

91712.jpg

Brian and another runner played with the black kitty that lives on the island. It sure was a friendly little critter. I imagine life on an island is bliss for a cat it being one biiiiiig litter box and all.

This is about 3/4 of the running group getting instruction from our CM person. Basically she shows everyone the course on a map, describes the route, tells us where the water stops are, and lets us know she’ll be at the end to call out our times. She wasn’t running. She was on a bicycle.

91714.jpg

Here we are getting started:

91715.jpg

91716.jpg

91717.jpg

I think the cat had the right idea.

The route takes you down the old air strip then you veer off to the right on the bicycle path. I knew Tracey would be taking pics of the air strip. The man is such a huge aviation buff. There’s a pretty good possibility he’s got jet fuel circulating through his veins.

91718.jpg

The bicycle path is surrounded by tall vegetation like you see in the next pic which keeps any air from really moving around back there. I’m still not sure what was worse: the sun beating down on us on the air strip or the stagnant, oven air back on the bicycle path. We started out just running. At the end of the 1st run thru the bike path we were down to 3 minutes run / 1 minute walk intervals.

91719.jpg

91720.jpg

91721.jpg

Tracey was standing at the entrance/exit to the bike path with the CM handing out water. He took those last pics, handed us both water, then we were off again down the air strip to circle back once we reached the end.

My hubby and the pic I knew he’d get. No, not of the 5k directional signs. I knew he’d take at least 1 pic of the airplane remnants.

91723.jpg

91724.jpg

When we came back to the bike path I knew this was gonna be a killer. We were absolutely dying. Going back in for more baking:

91725.jpg

When we were in the bike path loop again I was hoping Tracey would head on back to the finish. Looks like he headed that way.

91726.jpg

We weren’t far into the bike path this time before walking took over the running. I’m telling you it was brutal. 3/4 of the way thru the last lap on the bike path we came upon another chick who was also struggling with the heat. She told us she was from Scotland. Her boyfriend was a strong runner so he had gone well ahead of her. She was just trying to survive this thing. We collectively decided we were gonna finish this thing somehow and picked back up to a jog. We kept encouraging one another as we closed the distance back out on the air strip. The other girl said she wished she had us to run with all the time because we were so uplifting. So sweet! Brian & I ended up having company on the last bit of our run which was extra encouragement for us to keep moving if not for us but for our new friend. Sure enough, Tracey was waiting for us at the finish. Our new running mate was excited to make it to the end!

91727.jpg

I cropped us out here. I had reached over to take Brian’s hand and tell him we were almost there, to give it all he had now:

91728.jpg

As we crossed the finish he was shouting with excitement. It was such a thrilling moment for us to share. Tracey was a little slow with his trigger finger. LOL!

91729.jpg

This is just moments after we finished. People all around who had seen Brian’s excitement were congratulating him. I was so proud.

91730.jpg

We grabbed a bunch more water and drank several cups. Instead of walking back in the sweltering heat we decided to get smart and take the tram. Tracey had us stop to do a picture before we got back on the ship. He was very adamant that we buy it when we made our picture purchase selections.

91731.jpg

Tracey & I were both super proud of Brian for sticking to his guns even with all of us trying to talk him out of the run. Our finish time was pretty pitiful (34:40) but we never gave up. We did walk a good bit especially closer to the end. It would’ve been easy to skip that last run thru the bike path and just head back but we didn’t short the run or ourselves. We saw it through. Awesome experience. According to Tracey, of that big group we started in only 4 people finished before we did. Wow! One of those guys we had talked to and he was a life-long pro-runner. Like he used to win MONEY running in marathons and stuff. My guess is that a lot of the others couldn’t take the heat and stopped. I’m glad we didn’t.

Back on the ship we took cool showers and buttered-up with sunblock. Chandler was just having breakfast, still felt kinda icky, and didn’t want to go with us onto the island just yet. Tracey, Brian, & I went ahead to do some snorkeling thinking Chandler could just come join us when he felt up to it.

Boy was the island ever crowded when we got back out there. And it was miserable, melt-your-face-off hot. We trudged all the way out to the snorkel beach and hit the water. The water was refreshing but the snorkel equipment we brought wasn’t really cooperative. It wasn’t long before I told Tracey I was over it. He said he was, too. We were just tired. Brian was having a ball so he stayed out in the water. Tracey & I sat on the beach waiting for Brian to get his fill. Remember how I told you I’m not a beach girl? Uh, yeah. Even sitting still every moment was like a new form of misery that only topped the moment before. I freakin’ hate the beach. It’s sooooo hot and you get all sweaty. The sunblock feels yucky. The sand sticks to places you didn’t even know you had. I watched little kids playing in the sand and eating ice cream. That’s just not a very good combination. I cringe at the thought of it. Eeeewwwww!

After a short time the clouds started looking pretty ominous. The thought came to mind that God wanted to show me a new level of beach misery. Talk about a panic moment! I sent Tracey back to the water to go get Brian who was a good distance out paddling around. Poor Tracey. He had a heckuva time getting back out to the kid. We’re just not as young as we used to be!

We made it back to the ship without being caught in any rain. I think we were on the beach a total of maybe an hour & a half. Nope, we didn’t have any of the barbeque or ice cream or anything that you hear people talk about on Castaway Cay. Not a bit. To be honest, when we were on the island the thought never even crossed my mind. From about the 10th step away from the ship until we were crossing the threashold back on my thoughts were completely focused on getting off that stinkin’ beach. I am sooooo not a beach girl. LOL!

Getting back on the ship was fun. Walking up the gang way Tracey stubbed his big toe on a mini-metal step. The one he stubbed was the same one he had a bad ingrown toenail operated on last year. When it happened I literally was holding my breath trying to remove anything he was holding from his grasp. Tracey tends to have a short fuse. If he was anywhere else I promise you he would’ve thrown whatever he was holding and yelled a whole list of expletives.

When we got back to our stateroom Chandler was sitting there upset. We asked if he was still feeling bad. “No.”

“Why didn’t you come out to the beach then?”

“They wouldn’t let me. They told me I had to come back here and stay in the room.”

“Who is ‘they’???”

“The cast member at the gang way.”

When he got Chandler’s key card at Vibe they said that’s the key he needed and he could go wherever. We didn’t really think anything about whether or not they’d let him off the ship at Castaway Cay without us. All he needed was his key card, right? The cruise line pretty much treats the island as an extension of their ship. You make your purchases on the island with your key card. The Wave phones from the ship work on the island. You don’t need to bring any other ID besides your key card to get back on the ship (no passport or driver’s license). It never dawned on us that the island would be any different than anywhere else on the ship. Up until now he had been able to do whatever he wanted, right?

Chandler was so upset. Bless his heart. We didn’t know. We asked if he wanted us to go back with him but he said he didn’t feel like it now. I’m telling you, he was pretty much just shy of broken-hearted. We tried to smooth it over by telling him how hot it was and how the snorkel equipment we brought didn’t work out so swooft. His spirits seemed to pick up slightly the longer we were back. Poor kiddo. Looking back now it is a bit frustrating because it’s not like he’s a small child or anything. If he showed up at the gang way wanting to join the rest of his family it’s not like the CM couldn’t look and see that the other 3 key cards from our room had been swiped and we were off the ship. Where would he go? It’s a private island. With the exception of a small team of resident cast who stay on the island, everyone there were the same people who were on the ship with us. Plus, it’s not like if he doesn’t get back on the ship they’ll unknowingly leave without him. If his key doesn’t scan back on the ship they know he’s still there. I do kinda see where they’re coming from since technically he is a minor. I can appreciate their caution and understand the situation in this day and age with sue-happy people looking for piece of the Disney pie. I just feel bad because we didn’t know. The result was that one of our kids never got to step a foot off the ship from the time we got on until the time we got off. My suggestion is that in the future they’re more clear about these policies and not make broad statements like: this is his key to go anywhere and do anything he wants. That’s not true.

Tracey & I needed to get some future cruising business taken care of before we met Chandler back up top for some grub. We went to the future cruise desk to square away 3 more future bookings. The onboard offers are really great. If you book while on your cruise you get 10% off the cruise fare, only have to put 10% down as a deposit (vs. the usual 20%), and they give generous onboard credits anywhere from $100 to $200. An onboard credit is basically money that’s waiting for you on your ship board account whenever you set sail. You can use that money for anything you’d pay for: meals at the specialty restaurants, spa treatments, merchandise, bar drinks, etc. We booked all these cruise dates on the cheapest sailings we could find (I had done research before we left on vacation) so our deposits would be minimal. None of the dates we booked we intended to actually sail on. We booked them as “dummy dates”. A “dummy date” is like a place-holder. I knew the 2013 itineraries for the Dream and Fantasy were set to open for booking within the next month or so. Once 2013 opened up we would make our final sailing choices and move our bookings to those dates. By doing this we were able to book those cruises as close to the lowest prices they’d be at (as staterooms book up on cruises the prices increase because the availablility is steadily decreasing...it’s supply & demand). I fully intended to book when the prices were low then apply my onboard booking offer. It’s actually a really smart thing to do when you think about it.

Another important task in my onboard booking was the “unOfficial 2013 WDWMagic Girls Cruise” master plan. I had already been discussing the in’s & out’s with Tammy (Disneyfalcon) & Holly (hollybelle). If we were going to really do this, let’s get a discount! I booked 3 staterooms (a room for each Tammy, Holly, & me) for one of the dates and figured whoever ended up in those rooms could pay me back the deposit amount. At worst, if we elected to drop the subject and not go forward I could cancel the rooms and get the deposit money refunded. Right? Well, things are shaping up nicely! For all you WDWMagicer’s out there, we’re going forward with the planning. If you haven’t already seen the thread on the cruise forum, what are you waiting for?! Go look! We’re cruising, baby! Remember, this is totally unofficial and is not something WDWMagic is doing. This is a group of members organizing themselves to have a little getaway and share some adventures together in 2013. Yes, it’s all starting out as a girl’s cruise but it’s not limited to all-girls. The 3 of us who originally were piecing this together are all proper married chicks. Okay well, they are. I’m not so proper. LOL! Anywhoo, being the old married chicks we are it woulda been a little weird to explain to our husbands that we had guys as roommates. If any of you guys wanna buddy-up out there and crash the hen-party, feel free. K? So get yourselves over to the cruise board and check it out. It’s gonna be a blast!

This is for my girls out there! Pictures to mark the occasion! We’re cruising! ((me & Guy, the fellow who helped me get everything booked))

After we booked all our stuff we headed up to meet Chandler. It took us a lot longer than we thought it would. I had a killer headache again. Chandler showed us where the grub was at Flo’s V8 Cafe and we had a quick bite. It was okay. Nothing special by a long shot. Afterwards my head was pounding really bad so I took some more Motrin and laid down for a nap.

We woke up with plenty of time until dinner. We called the boys on the phones and had them head back to start getting dressed. Tonight was dress-up night and we were eating at Animator’s Palette!

Dress-up night is dressy but not too dressy. It’s not formal or semi-formal. Just dressy. I like to think of it as church-clothes but then I wouldn’t show my shoulders at church so kinda it’s not because I wore a nice sundress. We hurried out of the room early to go down and do pictures in the atrium. Again, I didn’t have the photographer take any with my camera because I assumed we’d be buying them. I guess you should never assume.

Here’s some pictures before dinner:

We made it down to Animator’s plenty early. They weren’t open yet so I took more pictures. Love them floors:

It wasn’t too terribly long before the doors opened and we were welcomed in. Going in:

Time to geek-out on the details! Animators is incredible. There’s cool stuff to drink in everywhere. The longer you look the more you see. It’s Disney at it’s finest. Really. Absolute finest! To me this is the epitome of what Disney can do when they want to do it all the way and do it right.

I hear these butter knives have a tendency to walk away. I can see why:

91748.jpg

I mentioned the wandering butter knives to Raluca and she gasped, “Oh gosh! Pleeeeaaase don’t take them!!!! They’re veeeeeeery expensive and we are always scared we won’t have enough!” I wouldn’t ever take one because that’d be wrong and bad karma and all. My suggestion? Sell them to us, Disney!!!!

The menu: (another item I would gladly purchase if offered)

Oh my was this meal ever incredible. The interactive entertainment with Crush was so fun. I could sit in here for days. Okay, well, with the exception of the hellians at the tables around us that needed shorter leashes. There was at least half a dozen little kids from several tables running around, rolling in the floors, etc. It was very distracting. One little boy was running past, stopped face-to-face with Brian, looked him in the eye, and proceded to dig a finger 2-knuckles deep up his nose. Appetizing, huh? I really had to fight the urge to stick a foot out and start tripping the little animals. Gee, I’m turning into a grumpy old bag, ain’t I??? LOL!

The food. Oh my my myyyyyy was the food ever good with the exception of my salad. For whatever reason it didn’t do anything for me.

Chandler couldn’t decide what he wanted to eat so he narrowed it down to 2 entrees and ordered both.

Tracey and I both ordered the beef tenderloin with wasabi mashed potatoes and haven’t stopped talking about it since!

91752.jpg

Good golly was that entree the bees knees!!! The meat was tender, juicy, and rich in flavor and texture. The mashed potatoes were creamy but at the very end you got a hint of the wasabi heat which was like a pop of Wow! at the end.

Then came the dessert menu!

I don’t even remember what the heck I ordered. This was it, though:

91759.jpg

Ali, Raluca, and Fitz brought us out a special anniversary dessert and sang Happy Anniversary to us. What a sweet thing to do. The dessert was even better than the one I ordered!

Of course I’m totally enamored of the dishes again. Disney! You’re totally missing the boat here! Sell us this stuff!!!!!

We weren’t leaving without pics of our new family with us. This is Ali:

And Raluca:

91764.jpg

91765.jpg

We loved them! They did such a fabulous job. Raluca was so warm and affectionate with the us and the boys in particular. She doted on them as if they were her own. On our first night Tracey was helping Brian cut his meat because he’s not super-coordinated at this task and was getting a bit frustrated. Raluca saw this and came rushing over to take care of it. She stood behind Brian, put her arms around either side of him, cut the meat, and even fed him some bites while she was cutting so he didn’t have to wait for her to finish. He looked at us with his eyes wide and blushed. It was the sweetest thing. Ali was much the same. If he spotted us trying to move anything he came running. He was always on top of every little detail. He never dawdled. Always in motion, friendly, helpful, and interactive. Seriously. These people become a part of your day and you find yourself looking forward to seeing them again!

Here’s some pics I took of the surroundings and interactive art from the beginning of the meal thru to the end. When you first sit down it looks like there’s salt water aquariums all over the room. So convincing! Tracey was very surprised when he saw various Finding Nemo characters swim by! I can’t remember the exact number but I remember there’s over 100 of the screens throughout the dining room:

91767.jpg

91766.jpg

And a video of Crush, Squirt, and a couple of their friends. It’s hard to film because they move around!

Crush also goes to different sections and interacts with select guests nearby. He had an guy near us loosen up by taking his tie and puting it up around his head like a headband. After Crush left the guy went to take it off and he came back to tell him to leave it that way. It’s all so fun!

In the end this is how the ‘tanks’ end up looking.

On our way out I took a bunch more pics. There’s just no way to capture it all. Animator’s Palette is one of the most incredible places I’ve ever experienced.

After dinner was over we did our usual run back up to our room to change back into shorts. On the way I snapped a few quick pictures of more cool artwork that caught my attention:

91775.jpg

91776.jpg

When we got back to our stateroom we saw our cabin steward nearby. No, this wasn’t the first time we had seen him. We just didn’t see him and have a lot of time with him the way others do because this was his first cruise working a set of rooms alone. He was always hard working and in-motion. Of course we had to take pics with him, too! Poor guy! He was really sweaty from working!
