Sell me on CBR please....

I have a trip booked to the Poly 6/5 -6/13 but my husband is badgering me to switch it to CBR because he thinks it looks so awesome.

I am nervous after reading the reviews about the bus situation at CBR. Is it really that bad there? I told him if he is keen on being tortured by multiple bus rides for a week with no monorail or boat rides why don't we stay at AKL, but he said he does not like that theme! I don't want to drag him to the Poly because I picked the GF last year so I feel like I should compromise and book the CBR for him.

Please someone tell me how awesome CBR is so I don't lament about not going to Poly like a big cry baby.

Look, we love CBR... it's where we almost always stay. I don't mind the bus stopping at all the islands... it doesn't seem to take that much longer to me, and it drops you much closer to your rooms. Then again, we usually have our own car, and when we DO take the buses, I'm of the (unusual) belief that the whole "Resort A has better bus service than Resort B" thing is a myth. I think it just depends on the route and the day... I've waited an eternity for a bus at AKL and hopped right on a half empty bus at POP (and vice versa)... I really don't think there's a consistent intentional pattern, and we've always had good bus service at CBR.

We love the food court, the theme, the music, the pool bar, the grounds are very pretty and walkable (we don't mind the size, it's a drop in the bucket compared to the parks - we enjoy the stroll), and the rooms have been completely refurbed in the last two years. It's usually our first choice, and we've stayed at most of the WDW resorts.

..... BUT... that said, it sounds like your husband may be really interested in saving a few bucks (can't blame him!). Poly is a whole other level. Mods are mods, deluxes are deluxes... the only advantage CBR would have over Poly is hot tubs (and pirate themed pool if that's a big deal)... and I can't imagine someone who enjoyed the island theme of CBR wouldn't LOVE the island theme of Poly... it's just calypso/reggae/steel drum music piped in vs. Hawaiian/South Seas music (and Poly is more intensively themed).

I can't blame him if that's the case... CBR is usually about half the price (or less) than Poly, and you have to decide if the differences are worth that to you... As I said, we've obviously decided CBR is "home" for us, and save the ocassional venture up to a deluxe or down to a value, that's where we stay. We love it... but part of what we love is the price, because if Poly was the same price, we'd be there every time.

I strongly advise everyone everywhere to ignore ANY reviews of buses at ANY resort. It's almost always completely meaningless.

WHY???

Because there's no such thing as a resort at WDW that has consistently bad bus service.

The problem is that we, as travelers, um, well ... we travel. We don't stay put in the same hotel for very long, maybe a week or so, and as a result we see only a quick snapshot of what the service is like. Yes, we can take 3 seconds to see that a room is too small, or a view is great, or a restaurant has a terrible menu, or a resort is too long of a ride to the parks. But if during a week at a resort the Mousekeeping was often sloppy, the front desk staff surly, or the buses a little slow, that doesn't mean it's that way all the time at that resort.

Here's a perfect example for you. We most recently stayed at the Polynesian for a week. For the entire week, and I'm not exaggerating, we never waited more than about 2 minutes for a bus. By the end of the week we were joking that people waiting at the bus stop should cheer for our arrival, as it meant we would be "bringing" the bus to them any minute. :ROFLOL: Anyway, as wonderful as our bus experiences were at Poly, I also have to realize that if we arrived at the bus stop 3 minutes later every time, we would've waited 15-20 minutes or more every time for a bus ... we would have left our vacation quite annoyed with how slow the bus service was at Poly!:ROFLOL: But by luck alone, we got there just as buses were pulling up. Luck, not good (or bad) bus service.

The size, the view, the distance, the menu ... these are things that don't change. it is the same for everyone, week after week, month after month. But a maid who's sloppy because her kid is sick that week, or a front desk manager who's having a bad hair day because he's in the midst of his grad school final exams, or bad luck with crummy bus drivers who are assigned to runs at that resort for a few days that week ... all of those things change all the time, they are not constants at that resort. Know what I mean?

Some people complain that CBR has 7 bus stops. Having stayed there twice, I say ... so what?! It really doesn't have much of a real-world effect, even though it can seem pretty important "on paper."

Coronado Springs Resort, another Moderate, has 4 internal stops. The combined Port Orleans resorts (both Moderates) have a total of 5 internal stops. At least the stops within a single resort are fairly close together.

Polynesian shares buses with Contemporary and Grand Floridian, meaning there are 3 stops spread out pretty far from each other. If your tired and can't wait to get back to your room, it can get annoying if you're seated on the left side of the bus to see the sign pointing left at the intersection to get to Poly, but your bus goes straight at that intersection to go to Contemporary first.

As far as I can tell, there are only two resorts with a single bus stop AND that don't share with other resorts ... these are Animal Kingdom Lodge and Pop Century. These resorts have lots of great things about them. But I would never choose one of them based on that bus situation. I just don't see the practical impact.

i'd stay at CBR again before staying at Poly again. Yeah, the walk at CBR can be long, but so is everything else you do in the World anyway. Rooms are a little smaller, but how long are you in your room anyway?
To me, the bus ride was much longer when we stayed at Beach Club Villas and had to make stops at all of the Epcot-area resorts.

We stayed at CBR in September 09 for the first time and fell in love with it. We're going back in 9 days and staying there again.

We had no issues with the bus system. Sure, you stop at the "islands" on the way to where you are going, but many times we took the bus from Old Port Royale after breakfast and only had to stop at a few of the islands, not all, before heading out to the parks. And the ride out of the resort when stopping at the other islands really didn't seem so bad. The resort is beautiful so I didn't mind riding around lol. Also, the busses to the parks were always very quick to show up. I think the longest we waited for any bus (to or from the parks) was 10 minutes. And that was on the way back to CBR on and EMH night at Epcot. Maybe it was pure luck for us, maybe just a really good bus system, who knows, but we had no problems

The food court is wonderful, I really like the layout of it and had quite a bit to choose from. The pool is fantastic... the whole resort just feels like it is taking you into another vacation within WDW.

You can youtube some videos of it too! I have seen a few that show some good shots and can give you a good feel of the resort.

I love the Poly too (staying there in November most likely). But as someone said before, a moderate is a moderate and a deluxe is a deluxe. I would prefer staying at Poly but its not in the budget right now (so we can go in November lol). But CBR really has my heart too! So to save some $ it really doesn't break my heart because i love CBR and think it is absolutely beautiful! Either way, you will be in WDW :sohappy: Happy planning!

I love CBR. I was there last May.. and even stayed in one of the "far away" buildings. Maybe Trinidad South, but I could be wrong. I didn't mind the walk Port Royale. We honestly only maybe ate breakfast there.. and only felt the need to go to the big pool area (hey - a girl needs a frozen beverage when tanning sometimes) once or twice. Mostly just stayed in our quiet community pool and it was great.

Can't say we had trouble with the bus service, but it really just is about timing. Sometimes you walk right up to the stop and the bus that you want pulls up, and sometimes you've just missed it and you wait 20 minutes. It's luck honestly.

But we loved the room and had a great time here. Let your husband win this one, and next year you can pick the Poly! :)

Hello balletgirl2

I stayed at CBR from Sept. 28 and came home on Oct. 2 2007. (4 nights 5 days for EPCOT's 25th Anniversary)

There is an internal bus at CBR. So you don't have to walk, but, it does stop at all stops in the resort so if you miss it it will take a few minutes to show again. (This can be solved by going to an other areas bus stop.)

I stayed in the Aruba section of CBR building 52. It was a very pleasant and really a very short walk to Old Port Royale (Food court, restaurant, gift store, feature pool and concierge)

I never had to wait more than 15 - 20 min for a bus for which place I wanted to go to.
Most of time 10 minutes or none at all. I had NO PROBLEMS with the bus service there.

If i missed a bus I usually took short walk to Old Port Royale and caught the bus there.

At night buses had following route Martinique, Old Port Royale, Trinidad North, Trinidad South, Jamaica, Aruba and Barbados.

During day route was Jamaica, Aruba, Barbados, Martinique, Old Port Royale, Trinidad North and Trinidad South.

Believe me when I tell you that it sounds worse than it is.

This did not take long at all. I try to catch bus at Swan, Dolphin and AKL and I waited 30 - 45 minutes for a bus (True Story!) (I stayed when it was off season as you can see so take that into account)

If i didn't want to wait to be dropped off i got off at Old Port Royale and did the short walk to Aruba across Caribbean Cay Island (has nice flowers, birds are around sometimes, gazebos picnic tables and more hammocks)

Atmosphere: Great, you have your own quiet pool so if you don't want to go to feature pool you don't have to. You also have your own beach area with hammocks.

Quiet, beautiful, relaxing and fun atmosphere. Would love to stay there again if the money can be save for it. Stay at POP a lot because of finances.

I hope this helps you. I think it was great and only been to Poly to see the Electrical water show from their beach.

I was thinking the same thing - CleveRocks, that post is just about perfect. You should start a thread with it, because it needs to be said.

The "Varied Bus Service" myth needs to go away, especially as a deciding factor in picking resorts.

Also, Palisades makes a good point about the quiet pools at CBR... forgot about that, but it's a nice touch that I don't think exists at Poly... every island has it's own pool, which si plenty large and colorful if not lavishly themed. They're never as crowded as the main pirate castle pool, and can be a nice little spot.

Thanks for the information everyone! xodisneybelleox those videos were great! I guesse the bus system is a game of luck to an extent. I think I am going to take the plunge and stay at CBR! I like the look of the resort and the newly renovated rooms will be a plus. It doesn't hurt that I will save $1000 either.

In all honesty I'd have fun if all I could stay at is Uncle Bob's sleep shack. After all I am going to Disney woohoo!

I forgot that the rooms at CBR are the largest of the moderates. So the difference in room size is not bad at all. But the quiet pools are nice since they are right there in your village and are seldom crowded.

Loved to walk from Aruba to Old Port Royale in the mournings through Caribbean Cay for breakfast. Pleasant music also played around resort.

Also your own village white sand beach with hammocks. Very nice.

I have worked at CBR and let me tell you, its as nice as people are saying. As with any moderate, it can't compare to a deluxe but CBR is quite nice. All of the managers are exceptionally nice, meaning that IF there is any issue while you are staying there it will be resolved quickly and efficiently.

Whats great about CBR are the pool areas. While they are not very big, each island has its own so the likeliness of it being crowded are slim. and if one is crowded you can always walk a few minutes to another one. The food court is also pretty nice. they have all the main quick service places but they also have Shutters, which is table service. I never ate there while I worked, but I heard rave reviews from guests who had.

Busses...again i do not have first hand experiences here, but working there you see/hear things. Yes each island has its own bus stop possibly making the ride through the resort a little longer but you can get on and off alot closer to your room than most other bus stops and i NEVER saw a long line at any of the bus stops and I worked through peak time. Obviously compared to the monorail at the poly its not as nice, but i wouldn't make the busses your determining factor.

I have always stayed at CBR- too many times to count. It has my heart as well. Love the theme, the price, love Old Port Royal's feel, music, theming, I love the 1.5 mile promenade walk around the hotel, the bridge in between. The grounds are so peaceful and beautiful. The main pool is very nice as well as the multitude of pools at each country allow you to find some quite space some where around the hotel. The rooms are just fine, how big does your room need to be, right? I have not used the bus systems, we have always rented a car because I don't want to wait when I want to come or go. I have not stayed at the Poly, i can only tell you why I have always loved CBR. Have a great trip!

We love CBR. It's a family favorite and it is our favorite mod as well. The rooms are nice. The food court is outstanding and I love, love, love their gift shop. Even when we don't stay at CBR, we go there just to shop. For whatever reason, they have some unique things there.

The rooms are always clean (at least they have been all of the times that we have stayed there). Mousekeeping always left lots of goodies....either towel animals, extra soap, etc.

I can't really comment on the bus situation since we always have a car.

I love CBR. There really isn't anything about it that I don't like. :)

look i have not read all of the replies you have received but felt that i too would like to add my 2cents worth even if it is redunant to what someone else has written.

i love both the Poly and the CBR. have stayed at nearly ever resort there and these 2 are my favorites. with that said i confess that the CBR is my absolute favorite. sure i have had a bus mess up there but then again that has happened at all resorts or at the Mk transportation area. i just love the theme and feel at the CBR and the wide open areas that you can walk. it is a very romantic place especially at night when you can just walk the whole area together. it happens to also be the first on-site resort we ever stayed at, about 6 months after it opened. the memories there standout in my heart and mind more than at any other resort. i love the island you cross over from the aruba/jamaica rooms to go to Port Royal, again memories of my kids and especially my late wife walking hand-in-hand over it.

Poly is great but seems congested if you want to take a quiet walk together while CBR is fae quieter. as was said earlier it is also a lot cheaper. finally, you cannot lose at any on-site resort especially the CBR and/or Poly but the CBR is always like home to me.

Well I can honestly say I strongly disliked CBR.. As for moderates I prefer Coronado because it is much more relaxed and the food is much better. I would actually prefer pop over cbr because it felt just like a value with a bigger bathroom and a higher price tag. I know I will probably get flamed but It is my leastfavorite resort including the all stars mainly because I don't feel like it is worth extra money for a different layout and slightly classier themeing.
