I have a computer problem

I need computer help, guys and gals.

A few days ago my computer started acting up. I turn it on, and it goes through the start up things fine. Then it gets to my desktop, the icons load, and then a blue screen with white text pops up (but disappears before I can read anything) and the computer automatically restarts itself. And it just keeps going through that cycle over and over again.

Anyone know what I can do to make it work again? I tried enterting the system in safe mode and doing a system restore point, but there were no points to restore to. I don't want to do a complete harddrive recovery unless absolutely necessary because there are some things I had not yet gotten a chance to backup. (Like ALL of my Disneyland pictures and all of my video files)

Any help you guys have is great! Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you got that virus the news was talking about a couple of weeks ago. Don't know what to do about it, you might just have to do a total harddrive reformat.

I agree you have a virus. There are way to remove the virus without having to format the hard drive. Your best bet is to look on an Anti Virus site. I prefer symantec, but others are very good.

If you decide to format your hard drive, there are ways to extract the data before formatting. Boot in DOS mode to save

Okay, seriously... of course I have no clue, but I hope you get it resolved soon. :( I just replaced mine a month or two ago... it was not fun. (Well, kinda... but you know, then the credit card bill comes and *sigh* )

The problem is I can't get onto the internet. My computer restarts itself as the desktop and programs are loading. Unless you're talking about doing this while in safe mode. But I couldn't get much of anything to happen while in safe mode.

Go into System Properties, then the Advanced Tab, then follow the arrows on the picture, and untick "Automatic Restart".

You'll then be able to see the error message on the BSOD, which is something we can work with. :)

There are instructions on Norton's website that shows how to remove the virus in Dos mode and maybe safemode. You have to go into the registery

If you think you might have to do a complete OS install buy a new hard drive and intsall on that this way you dont lose the contents of your current HD

Couple tips if you go this route:

Install new HD with antivirus and all patches.
Then make the drive master and slave.
You can then copy all data with ease.

If it is necessary to go that route you can by a case for about $25-$50 that will allow you to use your old hard drive as an external USB hard drive. This will alleviate trying to cram 2 hard drives in your case, changing your jumpers, CMOS etc.
