Have done it as well - ended up leaving the beach sooner than expected due to an approaching storm, called on I-95 in the morning, had a choice of 1 BR's (no open studios) and were checked in within 2 hours. As others have said - you are just at the mercy of availability....

We've also done the "sandwich" method twice. Both times were 5 days in the parks before the cruise, 1 night staying at the Country Inn & Suites Port Canaveral (free parking with their cruise package) and then another 5 or six days after the cruise (yeah, my daughter is just a bit spoiled ....)...
