Pre-Trip Going to Disney with my Mommy and Daddy

It was July 10, 1980-something. My family had just moved to Atlanta, Ga. and my parents decided to buy Walt Disney World Annual Passes for the whole the family. That decision sparked a major turning point in our families history. During the course of that first year as Annual Pass holders, we became a Disney Family. And not just an average Disney family that visited once a year or every few years. We averaged 2-4 trips per year. As the years passed and my brother, sisters and myself have grown older, we have never stopped being a Disney Family. In the dozens and dozens of trips we have taken, there has been practically every variation of which family members went. Sometimes its the whole family, others have been me joining my sister or brothers family, sometimes just my wife and I, and many of the grandparents, (my parents) visiting with the younglings. We had done Disney every which way possible, .......or at least thats what I thought.

The course of events leading up to this trip started out a bit frustrating, but ended up being very exciting, and something I had never considered as an option. After several changes in the trip plans of who would be going and when, it ended up being my Mother, Father, and myself. In all the years of visiting, I have never had a trip with just myself and my parents. So before I get to the details of how this came about, I shall introduce the cast of the trip. Please pardon the quality of the pictures of my parents as my mom used her cell phone to take pictures of actual printed photos in her photo album. She apparently did not deem my PTR worthy of taking the time to scan the photos and email them, lol. So here is the cast:

Who:

Me:
Keith, a 30-something Disney nerd

20151020_123923.jpg

Ok, so thats not me, but its a good example of how much I act like a child when Im in WDW.
Here is an actual photo of me which shows my other "Disney Side", which is the self proclaimed Mayor of Drunkey Town.

For my parents photos, I will post pictures of them at Disney from waaaaay back in the day in an effort to establish their street cred in the Disney fan community, hahaha. And also just because the outfits are too awesome not too!

My Mom: Debbie

Mom Disney.jpg

She is rockin' that faux snakeskin bathing suit tucked into those jorts. And yes, my baby sister was a little more daring and went with the bathing suit sans jorts.

My Father: Paul

Dad.Disney.jpg

If I could replicate that outfit (my dads), I would totally do it. This very well may be my endeavour leading up to our trip. And no, I will not make any effort to recreate the midriff and high cut shorts I am wearing in this photo, although I feel I did pull it off quite well back then.

Here is a more recent photo of my parents together at Disney. They are in the second row behind my sister and her son in the first row:

Mom.Dad.Splash.jpg

Where: 5 days at Animal Kingdom Lodge Jambo House!!!

When: Shortly after Pandora opens at AK!!!

So there you go. Some of you know me from my past trip reports and now you know my awesome parents as well!

The idea for this trip was born when my wife and her mother planned a two week trip to visit Italy this fall. Yes, the real Italy, not the pavilion at Epcot. I wont be able to join them and my wife is basically using all her vacation time for the year. Ive always talked about taking a solo trip to WDW so my wife suggested that I actually do it this year since we cant go together. If your wife gives you a free pass to travel and agrees to take care of the house and animals while you are gone, YOU TAKE IT!!! So I did. A few days into my planning, my sister calls me to tell me that she booked a Disney Cruise for her family. I told her I was planning a solo trip and within minutes the plans changed to me joining them for a few days at WDW before they set sail on the Fantasy. I checked availability, (thanks @lostpro9het for the help) went back and forth with my sister on which resort, and after several days we decided and I was all ready to book the room when my sister calls to tell me they decided to visit Cape Canaveral instead.

So back to the original plan of a solo trip. Then I had the idea that bringing my youngest nephew along might be a fun adventure (he is four years old). After my family stopped laughing hysterically at the idea of me (I dont have children) being able to handle a four year old at Disney, they convinced me that it might not be the pie in the sky dream of a perfect trip I was envisioning. After my bruised ego healed, I thought asking my parents to tag along would ease the worries of my nephew joining me. I called my Dad, pitched the idea, and he said he would think about it and call me back. A few days later I get a call with a counter offer, (my Dad is an attorney so negotiating is always a factor, lol). My parents said they would like to go to Disney, but without any young children. Just me and them. My Mom explained how they have always enjoyed the pictures and stories my wife and I have of our trips together and how we take it slow and mostly eat, drink and just soak in the atmosphere and they have never had a trip like that for themselves. It has always been with us kids, or the grand kids. I had never realized that. My parents moved Heaven and Earth for us kids to have an amazing childhood and if anybody deserves a few days to relax at WDW, it is them.

Granted, they wont exactly be alone since I am going, but we are planning to enjoy the best of both worlds. I will take a day or two to have my solo trip time while my parents do whatever their hearts desire. We will mix in random times to meet up and enjoy some time together as well. I am trying to convince my Mom to join the forums and participate in this PTR as well so hopefully she will and it will add another perspective. We are still in the early stages of planning so I will update this as we make progress. More to come soon!!!!! Have a great day!!!!!

He would get to feed and get close to animals WHILE also getting to eat lunch on the safari. Boom roasted.

They strap you into flotation equipment so you float on the surface, no swimming at all... Boom roasted.
Well played, Sir. On the safari, do you eat on the actual safari bus? OR where? Sounds interesting.

You eat out on the safari in the pavilion. There is a small private truck they use to move you between locations. You can see the pavilion from the regular safari truck as you are passing the flamingos, its to the right overlooking the giraffe area. So while you are dining you can make use of all the viewing areas on the pavilion as well as another secluded viewing area behind the pavilion. In addition to the animal experience and lunch you also get a water bottle and all the pictures the CM takes of you and the tour while it happens for download.

That sounds great. I know my mom hasn't booked anything yet so this sounds like a better option.

Does your dad have mobility issues following his leg operation? If so, check to see if he'd be able to do the Wild Africa Trek (I'd really like to do it but then I see pictures of the rope bridge and I'm worried I'd freeze on it and not be able to move forwards or backwards...)

We had an awesome experience on the Wanyama Safari at AKL - our guide was very personable and we learned tons about the various research projects they do. And of course it ends with a family style meal at Jiko, which is one of my favorite restaurants.

@wdisney9000 , who takes care of your beautiful dogs when you go on vacation? Too bad there isn't a deluxe hotel like the Yacht Club, (that I know you and your wife enjoy), that accepts pets. If they did, you could bring your dogs to Disney's Best Friends Pet Care during the day, and then take them back to the hotel with you in the evening. :)

No major mobility issues. He just has to take it easy. I wasnt sure if what @lostpro9het recommended required actual swimming.

Normally my parents watch he dogs, but my wife is staying home this trip (she is using all her vacation time to visit Italy in the fall w/ her mom).

Akira, (our Dutch Shepherd) is Public Access certified which means she can go anywhere with me. I do not require a service dog but since I am a trainer, I had her put through all the tests. I mainly did it in the event I need to fly somewhere so she can sit in the cabin with me. We do not bring her into restaurants or other places as we do not have the need, but she frequently accompanies us to the local bars that have patios outside. We want to being her to Disney with us one day since she is allowed to stay in the room with us (any resort) and have access to the parks. There are even certain attractions you can bring them on, (which we would not do). The requirement is that you can not leave the dog in the room unattended. We plan on moving to Florida within the next 5 years or so on the Atlantic coast side so we will most likely visit with her once we move down.

I recognized it :D. My husband and I watch that show a lot. We're about to be finished watching it through again.
It's crazy you say that. My wife and I rotate watching the entire series of, Friends, The Office, That 70s Show, and The League. We just started The Office again....For the 5th time around. We seriously have no social life, hahahaha. We just finished all of Schitts Creek season one. Hilarious

Yesss, The Office is the best! I pretty much always have it on as my "background noise" whenever I'm home because at this point I've probably seen it 10 times through (although sometimes I start over again after season 7 and I can't watch the last episode - breaks my heart!). DH loves it too but I think I've burned him out on it a little bit.

We also rotate through Friends and That 70s Show with Parks & Rec and Brooklyn Nine-Nine thrown in sometimes too. We haven't watched The League or Schitts Creek but we've been looking for something new so we'll have to check those out!

We clearly have no social lives either ;).

Your plans sounds great and all the fun things you're planning for your dad are so sweet!

Following along :).

We are the same with The Office. We dont really watch the last season much. The first 3 season are the best anyway. Thanks for following along!

While I dont normally hash out too many plans prior to arrival, Ive slowly began to piece day one together.

The current plan is for me to leave my house around 5 or 530 am and head to parents to pick them up (they live about 15 minutes away). If we hit the road by 6 am we should be in Orlando between 12-1 pm. We are leaving on a Sunday so traffic shouldnt be too bad, but in Atlanta, you never know, plus we just had a major part of the highway in downtown collapse and it is causing a lot traffic issues. The part that collapsed is not in our travelling direction though. I have a GMC Yukon XL so we are taking my truck to be comfortable and have plenty of storage room. Plus it can hold about 35 gallons of gas so one full tank basically gets us to Orlando. Our grocery store gives you fuel points per purchase allowing up to $1 off per gallon. If we max it out,we can fill the tank up for appx $30-35! Not too shabby. We will have all our food/snacks and booze pre packed so no need to stop anywhere on the way.

My dad will insist on being the driver but I plan on trying to drive the first few hours and sleep the last few. We shall see if he allows it. It is MY truck, but I know he will still insist on driving. He is old school and yells at other drivers ALL the time, so at least its interesting. lol. Anyway, here are the preliminary plans for day one.

- Arrive by 1 pm and hopefully our room will be ready. If not, we will drop off luggage and my parents are planning on having a meal and lounging around hotel until room is ready and I will be heading to Epcot (whether room is ready or not). If you are wondering why I wouldnt simply go to AK since its closer, it is for two reasons. First, I dont get the official "I am at Disney World!!!" feeling until I walk under Spaceship Earth or Cinderella Castle. Second, AK will be open late and I want my first time seeing Pandora to be at night with all the bio lighting.

- First stop at Epcot will be La Cava to get a cucumber margarita and send a picture to my wife since it is her favorite, haha! I will then sip my drink as I head to Germany pavilion to get the nudel gratin, my wifes favorite food, and send another picture. Ok, wait, my Mom is calling........aaaaaaand, ok. So as I was typing this out my mom just called and told me that they want to join me at Epcot. Yay! I informed her of my plans to get margarita and nudel gratin and they are in!

- The plan is to lightly snack and have a few drinks around the park until around 5 or 6 pm then head back to the room.

- Hit the room to rest for a bit and change clothes and wash up. We are either booking Boma or heading to Nomad Lounge for dinner and then check out Pandora for EMH! (open till 1 am!)

I will definitely be posting some "live" trip report videos and exploring every inch of Pandora. I have OCD when it comes to knowing EXACTLY where I am within the parks. Mostly for beer sales cart awareness, hahaha.

I tossed out the idea of eating at Rain Forest Cafe (AK) since I have never eaten there and my mom shot it down immediately. Apparently my father and her ate there with the grand kids before and he could not stand all the noise. He is not a grumpy person in any fashion, but mom said he couldnt stand the noise from all the stuff in the restaurant combined with kids running wild all over. Is this true? anybody had a similar experience? Or is my dad being a brat?

Loose plans for Day 2 :

Since we will be ending day one at AK to mostly check out Pandora, I shall return to AK on day two since they have morning EMH. I get up early at WDW. My parents do not, so I will be planning to be at park opening and knock out the headliners and then check out Pandora in the day time. Expect Dawa Bar beer pictures beginning around 1030 am :) I figured if Im up by 6 am, 1030 is practically lunch time. Yes, I realize I am delusional.

I will be saving my FP+ for MK later in the day where I will most likely meet up with my parents. My sisters family is currently on their Disney cruise and she is sending pictures. Its getting me excited for our trip. It is pouring rain in Atlanta today with strong thunderstorms, so her pictures are a good boost!

cruisa.jpg

She had to tease me with a drink picture. Well done, sis!

My nephews meeting the Captain and Crew.

I realize these pictures have nothing to do with my PTR, but Disney pics are always good in a trip report!

So I just found out that you can order "secret nachos" at Pecos Bill. Nachos Rio Grande. Has anybody ever tried this?

Apparently , you need to arrive between 3-6 pm and let a CM know you want to order the secret nachos. IT serves appx 8 people and you get a private table with western style plates and pitchers of drinks. They bring the HUGE plate of nachos out in what looks like a wagon wheel style serving cart with sauces. The CM's all put on their cowboy hats and bring out the nachos. It is $90.

While $90 seems insane for nachos, it does have the "experience" factor as well, and a private table. I would prefer to pay for this over a dessert party. I just texted my family and sent them the video for it and they loved it. There will be 7 of us, so it basically breaks down to about $13 per person. Thats not too bad. Here is the video I saw. What do you guys think? I cant wait!
