Will Disney World be worth the money for me?

Next year, my mom and I are going to Disney World. Great, right? Except I have a problem. I HATE thrill rides. And when I say thrill rides, I really mean any ride. To give you a better idea of what a wimp I am to when it comes to rides, I can only go on four at Kings Island ( a park in Ohio, for those of you who don't know). The Scrambler, White Water Rapids, Adventure Express, and this one next to The Scrambler that looks like a spider. Everything else terrifies me. Which makes me really worried about Disney World. I know the main attraction is the rides. I don't want my mom to spend a bunch of money taking me there just so i can sit on a bench the entire time. Or, worse, take me there and then have to spend even more money so I can do stuff like tours and shows that cost extra. So basically, my question is is if Disney World has any attractions for me that 1. Are tame enough that I won't be scared and that won't bore my mom to death to go on with me and 2. Won't cost extra money to experience.

A lot of Disney World is geared towards 5yr olds and that age range so I would assume if they are ok, you will be too. With that said theirs only 2 real thrill rides at disney world, Expedition Everest (some say this doesn't count) and Rockin Roller Coaster. They do have plenty of shows in the parks that do not cost extra and lots of 'dark' rides where you sit on a small boat and travel through that may include a 5ft decline but it's over before you can react so it's not a big deal.

Look on Youtube for a lot of ride videos and see how they are. I'm sure theirs plenty for you to do. Disney World is not a thrill rides park like Universal or Kings island so I think you'll be fine.

Worth is subjective but there is tons to do that doesnt involve gettinto a ride vehicle.

  • Shows - Finding Nemo, Lion King, Indiana Jones Stunt, multiple offerings at Epcot.
  • Omni Movers (moving benches) - Spaceship Earth, Little Mermaid, Living Seas w/Nemo, etc.
  • Parades and Fireworks Shows
  • People watching
Its worth it in my opinion if you have never been.

I'm a chicken when it comes to rides as well. I have a real serious phobia with heights. Here are the rides I generally won't ride:
MK: Space Moutain & Splash Mountain. I've rode them both in the past, but didn't enjoy the experiences, so I chose not to get on them anymore.
DHS: Rockin Rollercoaster & Tower of Terror. Rode RR once & it was enough. With my fear of heights, no way will you ever see me on TOT.
AK: Expedition Everest & Primeval Whirl. Never been on EE as the initial lift hill that's just tracks going up to the main part of the ride freaks me out. Primeval Whirl is just a really rough ride.
I'm fine with everything at Epcot.

There's plenty of other attractions and shows to keep you amused. You should be fine.

The key point to remember here is Disney World is a "Theme Park", where as Kings Island, Six Flags, Cedar Point are more along the lines of an "Amusement Park". You're going to find more entertainment, shows, fireworks, etc... Theming is priority, not let's make the biggest, fastest, scariest. Where as at an Amusement Park, you're going to find larger roller coasters and thrill rides.

I think you'll be safe at WDW. The price tag isn't cheap, but the memories you will possibly make will be priceless. Good luck on your decision making!

Yes it will.

Roughly three quarters of the rides are not "thrill". There's only 5 true rollercoasters. Two of these are "family" rides.

A lot of the most famous, popular and most enjoyable rides travel at less than 5mph. Seriously. They use audio and visual effects and storytelling as opposed to speed and G force. On top of these there's lots of show and theatre / movie style attractions too.

Thanks for the help, guys. Height is the main worry, so a lot of these rides seem great for me. I actually love rides that go fast....as long as they don't leave the ground. You've made me feel a lot better about this trip and being able to have a good time (without my mom being bored out of her skull.)

I'm a KI season pass holder. If you like adventure express then you can do anything at Disney!

Adventure Express has a 48" height requirement, Space Mountain and 7DMT are a lot lower than that. You'll be fine on all of them. :)

This October, I had the privilege of escorting a dear friend on her first visit to the Magic Kingdom. She hates thrill rides. While she was game enough to try Space Mountain, it wasn't her cup of tea. So we hit the Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh, the People Mover, Carousel of Progress, It's a Small World, the parades and shows, etc, and she had the time of her life. The distinction A W Reezy made is spot on: WDW is a theme park, where every ride, every event tells a story. I have no doubt you and your mum will thoroughly enjoy your days in the parks.

i think u should be fine. a good number of the rides don't move that fast, unlike the coasters. there's something there for everyone. i 2nd a suggestion to check out some rides on youtube to see what you'd prefer.
if it helps, we were chicken of a few rides too, like tower of terror, but love it now. if u go, i hope u guys have a good time.

I don't like thrill rides either. My first and LAST ride on Space Mountain was the same ride.....
You greatest disappointment is likely to be that you will find that you will run out of time before you do all the things you DO enjoy.

I have vertigo and sensitivity to odd movement. Also have a heights issue as well. That said, I can get on most of the rides at WDW with no issues. So long as they dont spin (Dumbo) or a rollercoaster (rockin coaster/ space mountain) I am good. Even splash mountain isnt that bad for me since the only thrill is the last drop which is over in like two or three seconds. Next May will be my wife's first time to WDW and she is a thrill seeker so she will be using the single rider line lol.

I would argue that WDW provides much higher value for non-thrill based entertainment than it does thrill-based. If its thrills you're after then I think you're much better off at Universal. MK in particular highlights this by really only having 4-5 thrill rides, with the majority being doable for most kids. Animal kingdom is much the same.

If you really think about it, thrill rides at WDW make up far less than 25% of the attractions. So my advice is to go for it - enjoy your trip :)

Well, there are a few more than just those two. In the MK there's Space Mountain, Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain. Now, these all have varying degrees of "thrill" in them, but since the OP said he/she was a total wimp, he/she might want to abstain. There's also the Astro Orbiter, which adds a height element that could freak someone out. In the Studios there's the Tower of Terror, which some would call the Tower of Momentary Drop, but it's still too much for me. And Dinosaur in Animal Kingdom is pretty rough, as is the Primeval Whirl.

All that said, I think there is LOTS of stuff to do in the Disney parks for a total wimp. Many of the rides are very slow moving - more about the stuff to look at than about the ride experience. And with the shows, fireworks, dining, and character interactions, there's just about no way to be bored at WDW!

The ride that she mentioned that she loved "Adventure Express" is faster than Big Thunder Mountain though. I'd equate the 2, and Mine Train as well.

I completely agree with you about no way to bored! We don't go to WDW for the thrills...I could save thousands of dollars and go somewhere else if I wanted a roller coaster trip!

@Shouldigo12 Do you go on Congo Falls at KI? Splash Mountain is less intense than that.

There are a SMALL number of rides that you would avoid. It is so small, you could still do 99% of the parks. Those are Space Mtn, 7DMT, Goofy's Barnstormer, BTMRR, Splash Mountain, Expedition Everest, maybe KRR, RnRC, ToT, possibly TT. The rest of the attractions and rides are tame.

Only you an determine if it's worth it. I am of the belief that it's always worth it. My DW hates "thrill rides", but even she ventured out and actually enjoyed Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, RnRC, Everest and Kali on our trip this August. The "Thrill" is tame compared to Amusement Parks, and the theming is responsible for a lot of that taming (except on Space, it's just Dark). I'd say go for it... :)

Aside from MK, there are a lot of great things to see (and food to taste) at Epcot. Great shows at the studios. And then there's every girls dream of shopping in Disney Springs!!
