Star Wars themed land announced for Disneyland

The point is Disney expected DCA to be so successful a third gate would be needed in a very short time.

Yeah, and at one point there was serious talk of extending the Monorail to the Inn at The Park Hotel (now the Sheraton Park Hotel) back when the Wrather Corp operated the place, but that didn't happen either. What about the massive plans to build DisneySea in Long Beach? That turned out to be a ploy to persuade the City of Anaheim to provide resources for the so-called "Anaheim Resort" district and associated infrastructure. There was never going to be a DisneySea in Long Beach, and similarly there was never going to be a third park in Anaheim. Sure, anything could happen in the future, but I wouldn't bet on Disney ever opening a third gate in Anaheim, at least not in the foreseeable future.

there was never going to be a third park in Anaheim.

In hindsight it is easy to come to that conclusion. At the time they were trying to mimic WDW and they were building new gates every 10 years or so.

We are veering away from the original point of discussion. Whether or not you believe in the 3rd gate or not, the idea of DCA was to turn Anaheim into a large multi day resort destination. They outright said it on multiple occasions. The idea was to get large spending tourists to spend multiple days in Disney hotels and spend lots of money on property with Disney just like WDW. DCA and Downtown Disney was only the start of that plan. The majority of the people that do come to DLR are still locals. That was not the intention of DCA.

DCA's numbers maybe up but still very disproportionate to Disneyland. Putting Star Wars land in Disneyland will only make that worse. This is not a good thing.

"The entertainment company faced objections from environmentalists and the State Coastal Commission over filling 200 acres of Long Beach Harbor for the theme park. The city balked at improvements Disney demanded for roads and facilities."

Disney had to be aware as it was drafting plans for the Port Disney resort that it would face opposition from state and local authorities to building a theme park in a busy port on the California shoreline. Not only that, DLP was tanking at the time and spooked Disney management about taking further financial risks with its theme park business. Disney stated from the outset that it would only build in Long Beach or Anaheim, and given the risks of building DisneySea it's highly likely that Disney's goal was not to build in Long Beach, but to leverage two proposals in the region to get the concessions it wanted to expand in Anaheim.

The land is already zoned with the parking lot operating under a temporary variance. Disney can't do much else unless they convince the city to agree with the demise of the third gate.

It wasn't in hindsight. I was saying it on Laughing Place around the time the Third Theme Park website was up.

As usual you take one small snip it and run with it, either ignoring or not comprehending the issue being discussed.

Disneyland's 2nd gate was sold to the board as a way to turn it into WDW west. DCA 1.0 and 2.0 has failed to do that. DCA even in it's current form has not adequately been able to draw enough people from DL, leaving a constantly jammed park on one side of the esplanade. Star Wars land will only make it worse.

With one new hotel, DtD and a second gate that was expected to draw only 7 million in its first year? Not sure how that makes sense to you or anyone else.

I want to mention, I find the attendance figures for DCA/Disneyland highly skewed and really hard to actually dictate. First click of the day gets the attendance number, so even if someone starts at Disneyland, and spends the other half of day at DCA, DCA get's no click... The attendance is not counted for.

If we want to make it accurate, we need to count every first click at each park, regardless if it is the same person.

Or get rid of the separate attendance and just count Disneyland Resort attendance together... As I have to wonder how many people are park-hopping.

Only 7 million? WDW's 2nd gate Epcot was 8 million at the time with a lot more going for it. No other non Disney castle park in the world was pulling in more than Epcot's just over 8 million at the time those projections were introduced. It would make absolutely no sense for it to expect to pull in more.

I wish they would dust off the WestCOT plans for awhile back for a third gate.
