This next park opened in 1989 as Disney-MGM Studios. Eventually, the park was renamed to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Considering that now the park isn’t even a studio anymore, it’d probably be best to rename it. I’ve heard this name pop up a few times, so I decided to go with it. Welcome to…

Disney’s Hollywoodland is a representation of the Hollywood that we always thought was, but wasn’t exactly, but still was. Again, gone is the “Studio” angle: now it’s just about riding the movies (Universal, eat your heart out!)

The first thing to change about Disney’s Hollywood Studios: the park entrance. The images, except for the one representing Star Wars, will all be replaced. The Lights, Motors, Action! image will be replaced with one of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, the one representing American Idol Experience will be replaced with one representing Mickey’s Philharmagic (more on that later). The one of Woody, Buzz, and Jessie will be replaced with one featuring Toy Story Midway Mania!. The one featuring The Little Mermaid will be replaced with one that represents one of the park’s newest attractions… Themed to Cars (but again, there’ll be more on that later)…

Hollywood Boulevard

Not much has changed about the first section of the park, Hollywood Boulevard. The only real change, besides what comes to the attractions, is the removal of the stage in front of the Chinese Theater. Kind of deletes the purpose of getting rid of the hat, doesn’t it?

Inside of the Chinese Theater is The Great Movie Ride, now freshly-refurbished (the ride-through is courtesy of DisneyManOne):

Walking into the theatre, at first, guests may not realize that some things have changed. The area still appears to be nothing more than a movie theatre with a couple of glass cases scattered about holding old movie props. But, as guests get closer to the props, they’ll soon realize that not all is as it seems; the props seem to be “alive”, allowing guests to see that this is no ordinary theatre…here, the movies come to life. As guests move through the queue, the first prop they’ll find is the carousel horse from “Mary Poppins”. Enclosed within a glass case, the horse is still magically moving up and down and back and forth, just as it did in the movie. Continuing past the horse, guests then come across the “Mighty Thor’s” costume, and right next to it is his magic hammer, from “Thor” and “The Avengers”. While Thor’s costume is being held within a glass case, it appears the theatre staff has had a bit more difficulty with his hammer…it’s so heavy that it’s fallen through the bottom of the case! The glass has been removed, and all guests can see is the very bottom of the hammer handle poking out of a hole within the base of the case. Posted on the outside of the case is a hand-written not reading, “Too heavy—can’t lift up. Please help!” Persistent guests who attempt to pull the hammer out might find they have about as much strength as the mighty “God of Thunder”. Further in the queue, guests will find the treasure chest that holds Davy Jones’ heart, from “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. If they listen closely and touch the case, they’ll be able to hear and/or feel his broken heart pulsating beneath the glass. The final prop found in the queue, just before guests step into the theatre, is the great Sorcerer Yensid’s hat, made famous by the “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” scene in “Fantasia”. Every now and again, if guests are paying attention, they’ll notice the hat twinkling with magic.

Entering the theatre room, guests will note that nothing about this room has changed, save for the new pre-ride film with TCM host Robert Osborne. Moving back and forth through the switchbacks, anticipation builds as guests begin to wonder which scenes the Imagineers could have chosen from the new films being represented in the ride. Heading onto the load dock, guests will still step onto a typical Hollywood soundstage, dressed up to appear as though guests are looking out to the original “Hollywoodland” sign and neighborhood."Ready when you are, C.B.!"
Once all are aboard their "traveling theater" cars, we pass under a shining marquee advertising "A SPECTACULAR JOURNEY INTO THE MOVIES" and enter a completely black and white set with older piano music playing in the background. Standing in front of some trees on a stylized dirt road is an AA figure of Charlie Chaplin in his most famous role, the Little Tramp. Leaning on his cane a bit and tweaking his mustache, he looks at the guests and smiles. Behind him the screen featuring the trees and background starts to change, and we are treated to a brief montage of some of Chaplin's most famous roles, from "The Gold Rush" to "The Great Dictator". As the tram moves forward, the AA figure of Chaplin waves goodbye at guests as they make their way to the next scene.

In our next scene, we enter the world of movie musicals. And what better way to introduce the movie musical than with Gene Kelly, performing the iconic title song of "Singin' in the Rain", swinging from a light pole, umbrella in hand, amidst a rainy Hollywood evening. From there, we find ourselves on the rooftops of London, as cutouts of chimney sweeps sway back and forth, and Mary Poppins and Bert sing "Chim-Chim-Cheree".

From here, the guests then exit the rooftops of London and then arrive into the dull, gloomy and dangerous streets of New York City. Garbage litters the streets, as the buildings rust and mold in decay. Flickering street lamps and hotel signs faintly illuminate the area. As the vehicles round the bend, they soon come face to face with Vito Corleone, the head of the Corleone family and the most powerful mafia family in all of New York City, as the guests enter a scene from "The Godfather". Corleone whispers into the doorway of an illuminated building, where he talks about "landing a hit" and that it will "be an offer that they can't refuse".

From here the guests then proceed into an open city street, surrounded by old, run-down abandoned warehouse buildings. The vehicles are stopped by a red stop light just before entering the next scene. All of a sudden, a gangster by the name of Mugsy appears and questions are tour guide on what they are doing in this part of the city. Before anything else can ensue, a car pulls out of a tunnel to the right of the vehicle, as gangsters from within, start firing towards Mugsy and the vehicle. Mugsy's assistants, who happen to be audio-animatronics, continue to fire at the gangster. iLoud gunshots ring throughout the room. As the shots land, sparks fly from light poles and the buildings. Our tour guide quickly makes it out of there, as Mugsy and the gangster continue to shoot. As soon as Mugsy has had enough, he actually enters the vehicle. He shoots out the red stop light and from there, hijacks the tour, telling the guests not to do anything funny or someone may get hurt.

From here, we enter into a southern western theme, on the desert outskirts of a ghost town. On the right, in a scene out of "A Fistful of Dollars", Clint Eastwood stands outside of an old saloon. Just across the way, on the left, surrounded by a vast desert, John Wayne, atop a horse, greeting the audience from a scene from "The Searchers". We proceed through the town, which is seemingly peaceful, up until a shoot-out then begins between the bandit hiding behind the sacks of wheat and the copper on the balcony. The vehicles then proceed into the next scene.

To the left, down one of the ship passages, guests will spot "Alien" actress, Sigourney Weaver, as Warrant Officer Ripley, with gun in hand, looking quite frightened. Ship mechanics and fluids are seen oozing behind her, as a rattle is heard just ahead of the vehicle. From above the vehicle, plumes of smoke start to emit from the ceiling, as a huge alien monster descends down from the ceiling, starting to claw at the guest, as intense lighting illuminated the monster. In another plume of smoke, the alien will then dissapear from above. Continuing this "sci-fi" section of the ride, guests will enter a small area themed to "Star Wars". In space, a small model of the Death Star will take up occupation in the ride, as an immense battle ensues in space. The scene utilizes heavy use of LED star effects, lasers and projections. Tinkling stars illuminate the space atmosphere, as lasers emerge from the Death Star and surrounding ships. Darth Vader's voice booms throughout the dome.

Soon, we find ourselves in the ancient temple from "Raiders of the Lost Ark". The temple is filled with ancient hieroglyphics, and flame-flickering torches. To the right, Indiana Jones is seen lifting up the ark of the covenant. The entire temple room is filled with moving snakes, slithering and kissing at the guests. The vehicle then proceeds into the next temple chamber, where the gangster spots a priceless jewel atop a stone temple altar. The sides of the temple are adorned with hieroglypics, destroyed artifacts and mummified corpses. The gangster tells the guests to remain where they are, as they don't think a few extra bodies in the temple would seem amiss. As the hijacker makes their way up the stone steps of the alter, a narrator informs that the jewel is cursed and those who attempt to defy the curse will surely pay their lives. As the gangster reaches for the ruby jewel, a "statue" God to the right of the jewel comes to life, warning the hijacker. They disregard the God's warning and reach for the jewel. Upon doing so, plumes of orange smoke arise around the hijacker, completely engulfing them. A loud shriek is heard. When the smoke dissipates, the skeletal corpse of the gangster is seen, reaching for the jewel. The temple God then disposes of their garments, revealing to be our original tour guide, who then comes back to the vehicle and resumes the tour from there, saying that anything can happen in the movies.

Guests will then proceed into a newly renovated horror scene. To the left, a scene will be recreated from one of the first original horror films, "Nosferatu", a film based on Dracula. The scene features the sillhouette of the vampire, Nosferatu, climbing up a staircase to await their victims, in one of the more iconic scenes from the movie. The horror film then segues into a scene from "The Shining", as the vehicles stretch into an abandoned hotel room, dishevled, as the lights flicker. From a busted hole made through the door, an audio-animatronic Jack Nicholson appears from within the hole in the door, axe in hand, to scream out his famous line, "Here's Johnny!"

Fortunately, our next section is much lighter and softer: a tribute to Disney animation. Replacing 1/4 of the Tarzan scene, to our left, we see an AA of Ariel, aka "The Little Mermaid", leaning on a rock and looking out to the right at Prince Eric’s Castle. As the wind blows, she recreates the famous scene from the film. “I don’t know when, I don’t know how, but I know something’s starting right now... Watch and you’ll see, someday I’ll be part of your world!” As she sings the last note, she lifts herself up on the rock and the tide crashes behind her. Then, replacing the other 3/4 of the Tarzan scene, the vehicle then travels under a rock arch formation and into the middle of the African savanna. Green grass pedals float back and forth as guests look upward to a familiar sight—Pride Rock. Guests see Rafiki embrace Simba atop the rock formation as an instrumental rendition of “Circle of Life” plays in the background. “The Lion King was one of the feature films to be released during the Disney Renaissance of the 1990s.” Animatronic giraffes, pouncing zebras, squealing monkeys and other animals cry out loudly, their movements graceful as they pay tribute to the newborn heir to the throne. A matte painting behind the animal figures portrays the impressive African landscapes in the distance.

The vehicle travels underneath Pride Rock and into the classic airport scene in Casablanca. Much like the current scene the room is decked out in drab, older colors but it has also been expanded. The entire room has been redone, with the wall opposite of Ilsa and Rick painted to look like guests are in the middle of an airport runway, with fog and lights surrounding them. To the right are still AAs of Rick Blaine and Ilsa Lund standing next to the plane, as Blaine quotes the famous lines from the film. Replacing the "Fantasia scene" is a scene from "Titanic". Replacing the projection of Sorcerer Mickey, an AA Rose Dewitt-Bukater lies on a wooden frame, as Jack Dawson holds on from the water below, re-enacting their last moments together and one of the most iconic moments of the movie. Behind them, the great ship begins to sink, after colliding with a giant iceberg.

Exiting this scene, guests find themselves caught inside a sepia-colored tornado funnel. We quickly leave the funnel and find ourselves in Munchkinland, from "The Wizard of Oz". The scene is beautiful, with small houses in bright colors, rolling hills and beautiful flowers. Dorothy's Kansas house has just landed on the Wicked Witch of the East, as her feel stick out from under the house, wearing ruby red shoes. The munchkins soon rise to sing "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead", before the Wicked Witch appears herself, in a plume of smoke, taunting the guests, asking them who killed her sister. She threatens the guests with her famous lines from the segment, before disappearing in another burst of smoke.

From here, the guide asks where to go. The Munchkins soon lend a helping hand by offering the guests to follow the yellow brick road, singing "Follow the Yellow Brick Road". The guide then steers guest out of Munchkinland and into a forest, where we see Dorothy and Toto, the Scarecrow, Tinman and the Cowardly Lion looking over a distant Emerald City scene, winding down the yellow brick road, leading through a poppyfield.

Guests then enter into a giant dark chamber, where a screen is illuminated with stars. The guide says that they've only taken a trip into some of the greatest movies out there, but there are many more to experience. From here, the screen is illuminated with a montage of scenes from many of the world's greatest movies. While the soundtrack for the segment will remain the same, the clips from the films will be updatesd. At the conclusion of the montage, dark curtains on both sides of the theater rise, to reveal audio-animatronics of all of the stars in the movies that we have seen, as they all take a bow. This was an original plan that they had for the attraction, which they had even started to work on, before budget cuts took place. This refurbishment re-introduces this great ending to the attraction.

The vehicle then proceeds back into the loading and unloading station, as the tour guide thanks them for joining them on their trip through the movies, the stuff dreams are made of!

Also, American Idol Experience will actually get a replacement instead of just being used as a theater for the Frozen sing-along. What that replacement will be, I don’t know. Any ideas?

Tell you what, to make up for how awful that was, let’s talk about the next area of the park…

Star Tours Land
We don’t have much information about Star Wars Land yet. I assume it’s gonna take the place of Echo Lake, considering that’s where Star Tours is. So, yeah. Let’s begin!

Obviously the area around Star Tours (which will remain unchanged, by the way) is themed to Endor. The area now inhabited by Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular will be themed to Tatooine. For example, where said Indiana Jones show once stood is a new attraction called A New Hope: Live the Force!, a thrill ride imagined up by the people at Conceptual Theme Park Planning. Below is a ride-through:

The queue takes us through the headquarters of the Rebel Alliance. The two lines (stand-by and FastPass) make their way through various heavily themed rooms of the rebel base. Near the end of the queue, the lines make their way into a smaller hangar bay with an X Wing inside. Various droids are around performing maintenance on the vehicle, causing the wings to open and close and various other movements. The two lines then pass through the next room where there is a large window to the right looking into the briefing given to the pilots before the mission as a realistic projection.


Unlike Harry Potter, the kuka supported vehicle is not a bench. Here it is the cab area of an X Wing fighter, seating 3 per row in 2 rows, with the back row elevated for a good view. The restraint is an over the shoulder like the other attraction. There is a practical effect in the loading area that I am really excited about to increase the realism. Obviously, the vehicle that moves through the attraction cannot be as large as an actual X Wing, instead just the cab portion. However, I want it to seem like you are boarding an actual X Wing. So in the load and unload areas, there is a hidden carousel of X Wing bodies that slot around the moving ride vehicles, making it look like it is a complete X Wing.

The vehicle leaves the load platform and turns left, still with the X Wing body. On a platform around the corner, C3PO is standing, basically giving us the safety spiel while telling us and R2D2 to be careful out there. A this point we begin flying, so the kuka arm pulls our vehicle out of the X Wing body and we turn hard right into a dark tunnel. Before us we see the forcefield of the hangar created with a laser effect and space past it. We shoot out of the base and over the city just as the Star Wars fanfare begins, moving into the first rotating projection dome. I can't decide how cheesy it would be to actually have the "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away..." text and the flying title projected on this screen as the music blares, but I'm considering it. We climb high into the clouds and meet up with the rest of the rebel X Wings, and we hear the leader giving us instructions. We fly away into the dense clouds and exit the rotating dome into a cloud of smoke, turning right to face another projection surface, where we hear that we are going the wrong way and end up narrowly missing other flying ships. The vehicle continues to move to its right to another screen where we decide to accelerate to what we think is space, continuing to fly into cloud cover. The vehicle seamlessly spins into a cloud of fog as we enter the next scene. We discover that we have flown right back down into Coruscant with neon covered buildings to our sides and other ships floating around us, unmoving but seemingly flying because of our sharp movements. We quickly move through the city, dodging objects and hearing our leader on the radio asking where we are, and telling us to get back to them on the double. We turn to another screen to show us flying up and out of the city, into the clouds, and then to hyperspace. We turn and fly past projections of the planet below us into the next rotating dome. We are back with the group now.

After some comments, we jump to hyperdrive together but as soon as we stop, we find ourselves in the middle of the battle. We begin evasive maneuvers and separate from the group. We hear though that we are being chased so we are told to try to lose them in the large ice meteor flying by. Yes this is exactly like the scene from the original Star Tours; I think this would be pretty awesome to experience in three dimensions. While still in the projection dome, we fly into the meteor and into the darkness while we turn out into the next scene. We enter into the dark and tight passage of ice crystals and fly through them, dodging both protruding crystals and laser shots from the chasing vehicle. We make it out and turn to a screen to show us making it back to space but then turning and seeing the Death Star below. We get a message as we move to the next screen that we are needed in the trench as a distraction so we dive in towards the surface. We then turn into the highlight scene of the attraction. There are two identical trench scenes that are right next to each other for scene pacing reasons. Our vehicle turns back into one of the two trenches and begins the iconic trench run. We move relatively slowly but the projected side walls make it seem like we are racing by. In addition, there are 3 Tie Fighters on each trench that we interact with. They are also on Kuka arms on tracks to the side. We are able to fly through the trench and dodge the Tie Fighters and laser beam created shots that seem to just miss us. At the end of the trench we fly to the right and turn to a screen showing us flying out and away. We then enter the next rotating dome room, where the main elements of the fight happens between the X Wings and the Tie Fighters.

We exit the room into darkness with just stars around us, moving quickly. We then turn to find ourselves face to face with a real full size Tie Fighter that is also on a motion base so that It looks like it is in flight right next to us. Inside we see a realistic projection of Darth Vader, threatening us. We quickly fly away and into the final set of scenes, which are mostly set in darkness with the star field around us. As we wildly spin around the corners we hear our leader saying that Luke is the last hope to destroy the death star. We turn to the last screen and see the death star in the distance, just as it blows up. We turn into the last rotating projection dome, where we meet with the X Wings and congratulate Luke, and then jump to hyperdrive together. We arrive back at the base and fly into a hangar bay, and come in for a landing on a moving platform. From there we seamlessly turn out into the set of the hangar, rejoin with an X Wing body on the conveyor, and turn to the unload station.


Two shops boasting Star Wars merchandise are set up here, known as Moon of Endor Gifts (which replaces the old Indiana Jones Adventure Outpost) and Droid Repair Shop. The latter also gives guests the opportunity to “build” a droid. Also here is the Mos Eisley Cantina, a recreation of the famous bar where Luke met Han Solo and Chewbacca.

The old theater for Sounds Dangerous is now a permanent home for the Jedi Training Academy. At least, half of the theater, that is. The other half is the theater for the Yoda Experience, an interactive theater show featuring Yoda.

Another new attraction here is Speeder Bike Soar, a roller coaster through the forest of Endor on a Speeder Bike.

It's a temporary stage it's required to go away after they are done using it. So 1 - 5 weeks after Frozen Fun.

Okay, we'll go with The Golden Mickeys. And now, it’s time to play the music… It’s time to light the lights… It’s time to meet the Muppets…

Once upon a time, long before Mickey Mouse and Kermit the Frog became part of the same company, Jim Henson and the Walt Disney Company had the idea to make a section of Disney-MGM Studios, as it was called back then, devoted to his characters, the Muppets. However, he didn’t live to see this section completed, and only one attraction made it to the park.
But now, Kermit and his friends finally have a section of the park all to themselves. Welcome to Muppet Studios!
The main attraction here is Jim Henson’s Muppet*Vision 3D, the one ride that made it. Let’s face it, the attraction’s in desperate need of an update, which it will now be getting. Using the same “randomized” technology used at Star Tours, a host of new segments will be added. As a tribute, though, all of these new segments feature archived recordings of Jim Henson for Kermit’s dialogue.

The Stage One Company Store located at the attraction’s exit has now been renamed Walter’s Muppet Memorabilia as a tribute to the Muppets’ biggest fan and newest member, Walter. Another shop here, It Feels Like Christmas, is in fact a renamed It’s a Wonderful Shop, which boasts Christmas merchandise year-round.
Mama Melrose’s is now under new management: specifically, Gonzo, Rizzo the Rat, and the Swedish Chef. Now called The Great Gonzo’s Pandemonium Pizza Place, it’s essentially what you’d expect a Muppet-run restaurant to be like. From within the kitchen, guests can see the Swedish Chef preparing their meals as they dine. Gonzo can occasionally be heard crawling up in the rafters above. Occasionally, Rizzo might arrive at your table and strike up a conversation with you. In other words, UTTER CHAOS.

If you just want a light snack, the Muppet Labs Taste-Test Station is situated near Muppet*Vision 3D. this snack stand is run by Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and his assistant, Beaker, and they’ve asked you if you’d be so kind as to test of some of the treats they’ve whipped up (mainly drinks, churros, and pretzels).
A major addition here is The Great Muppet Movie Ride, which stands where Pizza Planet at one point stood. This dark ride is essentially The Great Movie Ride if all of the information about the movies presented was wrong. Your host is Sam the Eagle, and you’ll be thrown in the middle of such movies as Peter Pan, Jurassic Pork, and Muppet of Arabia. And yes, a ride-through will be posted later.

Across from the attraction’s exit is a small play area called Dr. Bunsen Honeydew’s Muppet Waterworks. If you stop by, prepare to get wet!
Occasionally, Bunsen and Beaker themselves will make their way through Muppet Studios on the Muppet Mobile Labs. However, if you’d like to talk to another Muppet, they can be visited at the nearby Meet the Muppets meet-and-greet station. And that about does it for Muppet Studios.

Blah blah blah, new land, blah blah blah...

After you meet the Muppets, you’ll find yourself on the streets of New York. This land isn’t very large, but there’s at least a lot to do. The land now also gains some new facades resembling the New York section of Tokyo DisneySea as well. The cardboard New York backdrop can stay, though. I just can't imagine New York Street without it.

A new addition here is Oliver’s Market, an outdoor eatery (a la the Prince Eric’s Village Market at the Magic Kingdom) where you can grab a snack. It’s named after the main character of Disney’s 1988 animated film Oliver and Company.

The Premiere Theater gets a new look, new seating, and a new show: Newsies: The Musical! Based on the 1992 feature film and the Broadway show adapted from it, this show focuses on paperboys, exploited by their bosses, who want to be the “Kings of New York”. The theater is topped by a large billboard advertising the show.

And what, you might be asking, is the Big Kahuna of New York Street? Say hello to The Avengers Superhero Showdown, another idea from Conceptual Theme Park Planning:

The main attraction for the land is a large motion base tracked attraction, like Spiderman. Both this and the next attraction, the coaster, load in the same showbuilding and are accessed from the same main lobby space, themed as the atrium of SHIELD headquarters. This attractions queue will begin on the right side of the atrium, and the standby, fastpass, and single rider queues go through hallways and storage areas of SHIELD before making it to the preshow area. Each line passes a SHIELD information glasses distributor, which are the 3D glasses for the ride. The queues then stay together in this preshow, which is the information center and briefing room for the mission. Large floor to ceiling projections along the wall form a continuous band of data, with sections that are diagnostics of the Avengers, diagnostic scans of you yourself, information and schematics of the vehicle, and video clips from Nick Fury explaining the mission. Our mission is to follow and observe the Avengers in action in the name of record keeping, and not to interfere with their work in any way. There have been reports of another Chitauri sighting that they are going to investigate. Just in case, they will be taking with them a weapon that was developed after the last attack that should wipe out another Chitauri invasion instantly. We will ride in a specially designed SHIELD hovercraft, capable of keeping up with the Avengers while keeping us safe. We continue around the corner of the queue and enter the vehicle pool of SHIELD, which is our loading area.

The vehicle is a motion simulator on a moving base, somewhat similar to the Universal model used in Spiderman and Transformers, but it looks completely different and seats in a different configuration. It is a hovercraft, so it has what looks like a cover for a large propeller at the bottom, with jet engines and tail fins at the back. It will seat a total of 11, with the front row seating 3 and the middle and back rows seating 4, so that it can narrow to a nose at the front.

After loading and leaving the dock, the vehicle continues down the motor pool, passing other vehicles. Then we get a radio call from Nick Fury, telling us to be on the lookout for Iron Man, who is looking for us, and to make sure we are wearing our information glasses. These glasses are supposed to act like Iron Man’s screen, providing data over top of what we are actually seeing. Therefore, during the attraction, some of this data is in what is projected in front of us, making it look like our glasses are functioning. During the call, Iron Man interrupts, saying he will take it from here. Around the corner, we find our first 3D projection screen, with Iron Man hovering before us, telling us that us rookies better keep up, or we are on our own. Black widow then interrupts him, yelling that’s it’s time to leave. The vehicle turns and moves forward to the next screen, where the large combat plane the Avengers use is hovering in frame, the Avengers in view inside. Iron Man flies in and they take off as we quickly spin and take off, heading out the hangar door. We are now flying. We are facing a projection wall, where we see the SHIELD plane flying ahead of us, out over the city. The vehicle moves into the next room, a special flight room, with the projection surface on the inside face of the round room. Here we continue flying with the Avengers, but then we are attacked by the Chitauri. The main plane is hit and begins to crash, so we follow, wildly spinning, moving on to the next room. The screen before us shows the ship landing, with Iron Man flying up and telling us to follow him and be careful, it’s getting dangerous out here fast. We turn to the next screen, where Iron Man is fighting the Chitauri on the ground. We are nearly hit, so we backup and evade, turning to the next screen where we see the rest of the Avengers just out of the ship, immediately attacked, causing Bruce Banner to transform into the Hulk right before us, taking up much of the screen. We turn and go down a narrow alley and start flying up, show by the walls on either side scrolling as if we are rising. We turn out onto a roof top and look out over the city, seeing one of the large flying Chitauri ships flying through the skyscrapers.

We turn to the next screen, which is very large and takes up our field of view. Here we fly back down to the street, and find the Avengers and circle them, recreating the shot from the movie of the Avengers assembling. We turn away and pass rumble, making to the next screen which shows the Avengers fighting together. The next room has another large screen, showing us flying up, passing Iron Man in flight and Hawkeye on a rooftop shooting. Next is the ambitious segment of the ride that sets it apart from Spiderman: animatronics mixed in with the projections, which is something I really hoped Universal would have done in the Transformers ride. In the projection, we circle around a building which them seamlessly blends into the real set next to the screen of the building wall, with a full size, though limited motion, Hulk animatronic hanging off the wall, roaring at us. Hopefully, that moment will be such a surprise and blended so well, that people will have to question what exactly they just saw before quickly moving on, much like the dragon head in Forbidden Journey.

We quickly turn around and are met by Black Widow on a commandeered Chitauri speeder, telling us that Iron Man is preparing to detonate the weapon, and to follow her and be careful. We turn the corner and arrive at the next screen, where we see Iron Man on the roof top, presented with another animatronic. He has the weapon but also bad news. His suit has been damaged, so he can no longer fly to deliver the weapon. We have to do it. He instructs us that we have to get it as close as possible to the main ship and then detonate it. Black Widow and Hawkeye are going to follow to assist, but it’s all up to us. We turn and go into another flight room. Here we are flying through the city, dodging Chitauri ships. We turn to another flat screen and see Black Widow and Hawkeye’s ship shooting us a path. We turn and fly down an alley, and turn into a hemisphere screen, where we see us fly directly to the main ship and detonate the weapon. We turn to another screen where we fly back down to the ground and find the Avengers assembled, congratulating us. We turn to our last screen and take a short flight back to the SHIELD building. Then we turn and enter the real life hangar bay entry, and find the unload station.

The attraction exits out into the STARK Enterprises Inventory, an idea by our good friend DisneyManOne. This is how he described it…

In addition to building droids and robots, the area also features many different small-scale experiences, like...

  • Iron Man Gauntlet Testing: There are several partitioned stations. When you walk to your cubicle you are looking through a piece of Plexiglas into a room. This looks like one of those stations that people in the biohazard lab use to handle objects. You slide your hands into a pair of Iron Man's gauntlets. Though invisible, you are seeing the room through Mylar Foul that allows the Pepper's Ghost effect to create the illusion that it then becomes sort of a magic shooting gallery. Depending on what you hit all sorts of things happen in the room on the other side of the plexiglass.
  • The Hulk: Recreates the ability to jump like Hulk.
  • Iron Man Boot Experience:A person would lay back and be strapped in. They would place their feet into IronMan boots. They would be shot up the long diagonal tube and then slide back down breaking at the bottom.
  • The Marvel Carousel (Multilevel):All of the ride units face the center of the ring. There are two rings. The inner one doesn't simulate as many Gs. The outer one travels fast enough to be a mildly thrilling. Riders can travel up and down the pole as well as tilt side to side, forward and back a bit

PIXAR Place
Disney had already collaborated with PIXAR Animation Studios a few times before finally buying them when Bob Iger became the head of the company. What took them so long? Who knows?

PIXAR Place opened in 2008 with the Toy Story Midway Mania! attraction, but since then hasn’t gained that many rides. This new expansion will change that, with new attractions, shops, and restaurants based on five more of PIXAR’s feature films. You won’t find Nemo or learn what a bug’s life is like here. We’ll save that for Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The new PIXAR Place takes over the land where Lights, Motors Action! Extreme Stunt Show, the Studio Backlot Tour, and Wandering Oaken’s Frozen Funland.
This land is entered through a replica of the entrance gates pictured above. The first area isn’t themed to a movie, but PIXAR’s studio over in California. To your right is a gift shop, Knick Knacks and Tin Toys, boasting PIXAR merchandise and crawling with references to PIXAR’s cartoon shorts (including a large mural in the back of the store).

The first attraction you’ll find here is a museum of sorts called The PIXAR Story, where you’ll learn about how PIXAR got its start, find out some fun facts about their films, and even get a sneak peek at their next release. Near the attraction’s exit is a snack stand called The Cereal Bar.

This area transitions into one themed to the city of Metroville from one of PIXAR’s most popular movies, The Incredibles. You can grab a super suit of your own at Edna Mode’s, a gift shop owned by the woman who designed the suits for the Incredibles. Remember, NO CAPES!

Or, if you’re hungry, you can stop by Frozone’s Freeze for an ice cream cone, a smoothie, or another icy treat.

The main attraction in this area is The Incredibles Adventure, an indoor coaster in which wanna-be superheroes help the Incredibles save the city from a mysterious new villain. It’s not Syndrome, in case you’re wondering.

The streets of Metroville slowly but surly turn into the streets of Paris straight out of Ratatouille (coincidentally, both movies had the same director). Obviously, the main draw here is the food, which is served at Gusteau’s. Yum!

But what about the attractions? There’s one: Remy’s Kitchen Calamity, a dark ride in the style of Roger Rabbit’s Car-Toon Spin over at Disneyland. Riders climb aboard a giant rat and go with Remy into the kitchen on a search for the best ingredients. While the ride is inspired by the recent dark ride added to Disneyland Paris, it shares very few similarities with it.

And then it’s on to Monstropolis, the city where the main characters of Monsters Inc. and Monsters University reside. The city is bustling with monsters, even if it’s not obvious: if you put some trash in the garbage can, a voice from inside might thank you for the meal. Some monsters can be heard underneath you, in the sewers. Monsters sure have some weird living conditions, don’t they?

Here you’ll find Mike Wazowski’s Laugh Floor Comedy Club, relocated here from the Magic Kingdom. Also here is a new attraction, the Monstropolis Scream Machine. The story? The city is having a power shortage, and Mike has an idea (besides the comedy club idea he already came up with): invite humans into their world to take a ride on a roller coaster he’s constructed through the hallways, restrooms, and door vault of Monsters Inc. You’re sure to scream (with laughter) as you climb aboard your door and zip through the factory. The ride exits out into the Laugh Floor Store, where you can grab some Monsters Inc. merchandise, joke books, whoopee cushions, and other pranking supplies.

If you’re hungry, stop by the most popular restaurant in Monstropolis, Harryhausen’s. Here you’ll find a selection of Asian delicacies fit for those with a monster-sized appetite. What makes this any different from OTHER sushi restaurants? The chef: a six-armed octopus!

From there, after you pass Mike’s car, you find yourself in Radiator Springs, the cutest little town in Carburetor County. This entire section is very similar to Disney California Adventure’s Cars Land, albeit with only two attractions rather than three. Radiator Springs Racers give fans of the films the opportunity to race others in the Radiator Springs Grand Prix, while Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree sticks them in a tractor and sends them spinning around Mater’s home turf. Sarge’s Surplus Hut and Ramone’s House of Body Art are THE place to grab Cars merchandise on property, though the latter store also doubles as a (temporary) tattoo parlor.

Next up is Paradise Falls from PIXAR’s 2009 release, UP. Listen closely and you might hear strange sounds from the bushes. This is a great place to earn your Wilderness Explorer Badge!

There’s one attraction here. Paradise Falls Parachute Drop is your typical parachute ride with an UP theme. Also here is a small playground called Wilderness Explorers Adventure Trail. The mandatory restaurant is The Spirit of Adventure, held inside a large blimp. And the gift shop is none other than Carl’s House.

And finally, we come to Toy Story Playland, which takes a cue from the Toyville Trolley Park area of Tokyo DisneySea. The main draw here, of course, is Toy Story Midway Mania!, which at the moment is getting a third track. Another attraction here is a small Musical Express-style ride called Woody's Roundup in which guests board a giant toy snake (the one that's always getting in Woody's boot) and help Woody round up cattle). Set up nearby are several more carnival games with a Toy Story twist. Toy Story merchandise can be found at the Midway Mercantile gift shop.

To heck with it, I'm gonna finish up the park in one post...

Animation Courtyard
Disney just wouldn’t be Disney without the classic animated films that made them a household name. They’ve given us such beloved characters from Snow White to Baymax that there just HAD to be a place in Disney’s Hollywoodland that could pay tribute to the animation process. And there is. It’s called Animation Courtyard.

The Magic of Disney Animation has been given a new show. While I enjoy the Mushu show, I’ve decided to bring back the old one with Robin Williams as a tribute, if only for a limited time.




Where Voyage of the Little Mermaid once stood is a relocated Mickey’s Philharmagic. Like Muppet*Vision 3D, the attraction now features the “randomized” technology used at Star Tours. The original, returning segments like “Be Our Guest” and “A Whole New World” are joined by several new ones, such as “I See the Light”, “Pink Elephants on Parade”, and “Under the Sea”. Sometimes, the show may not even star Donald, but Goofy. The attraction exits out into the Donald's Music Shop gift shop.

Tucked in-between Disney Junior – Live on Stage! and The Magic of Disney Animation is a new restaurant called Animator’s Palate. It’s pretty much the same restaurant found on many of the Disney Cruise Line ships.

And finally, we have a new addition, and the park’s first water-based attraction: FANTASIA. Based on the popular animated film of the same name, this water coaster sends riders into many of the film’s most popular segments. A ride-through will come soon.

Sunset Boulevard is hope to the park’s two most popular attractions: The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith. The former will remain unchanged, but I’m sure the latter should probably be rethemed, but to what, I don’t know. Any ideas?

Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage is gone, because with the film’s recent presence at the Magic Kingdom, it’s not really necessary anymore. So instead, we have a new show based on Disney’s 2010 animated movie, Tangled, based on the story of Rapunzel. The theater, as well, is now completely enclosed.

Fantasmic!, the area’s source of nighttime entertainment, has been refurbished too. I will post a run-down of the show later. For now, let’s finish up the park!

Entertainment
Before we leave the park, let’s talk about entertainment. Who doesn’t love a parade? This park has had quite a few over the years. Originally, there was the Disney Stars and Motor Cars Parade. Then it was Block Party Bash!. And then the PIXAR Pals Countdown to Fun Parade, which was so bad that when the park management finally got rid of it, they weren’t in a rush to replace it.

Now the park gets a new version of the Disney Stars and Motor Cars Parade with a few new floats. These new floats act as replacements for the parade’s Atlantis, Playhouse Disney, Power Rangers, and Lilo and Stitch floats. Anna, Elsa, and Olaf drive down the parade route in a car decorated to look like a sled. Wreck-It Ralph gets a car of his own, probably built by Fix-It Felix Jr. (if the car’s being made of bricks is any indication). Tiana and Naveen are in a car decorated with lily pads and swamp grass. And Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, and Eeyore drive a wheelbarrow-shaped car overflowing with crops from Rabbit’s garden and honey pots.

In 1998, on Earth Day to be precise, the fourth theme park of Walt Disney World, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, opened. Often referred to as a “new species of theme park”, this is THE place in Florida to get up-close-and-personal with some of your favorite animals. Now sadly, since its opening very little has been done with the park, aside from the occasional new attraction. It’s in desperate need of an expansion. And now, in my plans for Walt Disney World, it gets one, gaining new lands and a few new attractions as well (we’ll be skipping over AVATAR Land and The Oasis, as I don’t have any ideas for them).

Discovery Island
Discovery Island acts as sort of the park’s equivalent of Main Street U.S.A., it, combined with The Oasis located at the park’s entrance, makes for a great way to begin your day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. There aren’t that many attractions here, so nothing too drastic would take place.

The only real change would be the addition of a new show replacing the much-too-scary-for-an-attraction-based-on-such-a-tame-film It’s Tough to Be a Bug! Don’t worry, Flik and his friends will set up shop elsewhere in the park. But now, inside the Tree of Life Theater is a new show called DisneyNature’s EARTH. Based on DisneyNature’s first feature film, the new show gives us the opportunity to live a day in the life of an animal, such as an elephant, a whale, and a polar bear.

Jambo! After a walk through Discovery Island, guests find themselves in the Village of Harambe. You’ll feel as though you’ve actually arrived in Africa, with the storm-worn stone buildings and thatched roofs.

Festival of the Lion King remains unchanged, as does Kilimanjaro Safaris.



However, where one could originally find the Wildlife Express Train. However, I plan on getting rid of both the train AND Rafiki’s Planet Watch. Have no fear, the Petting Zoo’s animals will all find a new home at Fort Wilderness (that’s where they put the animals at Grandma Duck’s Petting Farm after it closed at the Magic Kingdom). Where the train station once stood is now a new attraction known as the Mystic River Mountain (an idea from fellow Armchair Imagineer KingMickey that was too cool NOT to put in).


You continue down the pathway approaching the mountain. Tall trees and plants surround the area, truly immersing the guests in a jungle environment. At the top of the mountain, you can make out what appears to be some sort of temple, sheltered within the rocky texture of the mountain. On the side of the mountain that faces the guests, a large crater is formed, a curved waterfall cascading down, into the crater. The mountain is on an abandoned island, surrounded by water. You can make out carved Mayan symbols on the rocky texture of the mountain. At the end of the large plateau, you can make out what appears to be some sort of docking building, made out of wood, which appears to be years old. You approach the building, getting a better look and seeing more of the surrounding details. The wooden lodge building appears to be splintered and worn. Several lanterns are suspended from the inside of the building. Above the entrance, a sign reads, “The Mystic River Mountain”.Once you enter the building, you’ll immediately enter the queue. The queue is outdoors, but is completely covered by the roof of the building. Tall wooden supports hold the roof up, each adorned with a lantern and various equipment. As you make your way through the queue, you’ll notice several crates and pieces of equipment, which reads “Discovery Island River Cruises”. From what you can make out of the surrounding area, it appears that a group of adventurers have just settled in the surrounding area and are operating an excursion along the river.

It turns out that passing guests are allowed to join the excursion abroad the river and have an adventure, themselves! After making your way through the queue, the guests board large, dark brown cruise boats, suspended under a wooden awning. The boats feature eight rows, capable of containing six people in each row. A Cast Member at the end of the queue assigns you to the row you’ll be sitting in. Ahead of each seat is a pouch, where you can store any loose items. Above each pouch is a horizontal hand bar, something you can hold on to, just in case the waters get a little rough. When the guests are ready to go, the boat travels out of the docking station and proceeds across the water, towards the steep mountain.

While approaching the mountain, the boat enters into the rushing current of a river, which circles around the front side of the mountain. The segment lets guests have a batter view of the mountain. The rushing current of the river takes guests around a curve. Large boulders and rock work, covered in moss and plants surround the area, making the guests feel as though they were traveling down a narrow alleyway of a mountain. The sunlight stretches through the tall tree branches above. The sounds of animals off in the distant jungle could be heard. The boat continues down the river, following the trail of the water. Curving around the trail, the guests see a dark cavern, ahead. As the vehicles approach, they get a last glance at civilization; a small glance of the Caribbean Plaza. The guests enter into the dark cavern, into complete darkness. The sound of an approaching waterfall is heard. As some would expect, there is a sudden drop and the guests proceed down a waterfall.

The guests proceed through the dark cavern. Rays of sunlight peek through small cracks in the rocky walls. Moss covers the sides of the walls. The faint light offers a glimpse at the rock walls. Along the rocky texture, guests can make out Mayan symbols and lithographs, hand carved into the rocky wall. On both side of the rocky cavern, the symbols depict some sort of story. The first panel the guests come across is a panel of a shining sun, rising high above a mountain. The next picture shows the sun, as several wandering animals encircle the circular orb. The third lithograph shows the sun descending behind the mountain. The final inscribed picture shows the moon hovering over the mountain, as several unbelievable, unforeseen, yet familiar creatures encircle the moon.

The guests make their way out of the cavern and into the lush surrounding of a tropical jungle. A low mist settles across the floor, as the boat travels down the narrow rivers of the mountain. Tall, rocky walls stretch around the area, as trees and plants block the vehicle from sight. To your right, a large elephant is seen, raising his trunk, as if he was going to spray you. The boat continues down the river, letting the current lead the way. The boat rounds a bend until it passes a grassland, where zebras and giraffes are grazing. There is a single lion figure atop a rocky cliff.

The boat continues around a bend. A section of the river separates and travels into a large watering hole. Surrounding the watering hole are gazelles, warthogs, several different types of birds, rhinoceroses and hippos, living out the usual schedules of their lives. The boat continues down the current of the river. The guests can make out another cavern in the distance, surrounded by dangling moss and plants. The vehicle enters the dark cavern, before proceeding up a lift hill.

I know it seems pretty out of sorts to have a lift hill in the middle of a mountain, especially for a boat ride and it doesn’t really make much sense. However, Disney’s done wit with Splash Mountain and Pirates, even when it environmentally doesn’t make sense. However, if we really think that far into it, a lot of what Disney does with their attractions doesn’t “environmentally make sense”. The boats proceed up a lift hill, in complete darkness. Above, a large breach in the mountain roof shows the sun descending, as the sky fades to nighttime. The effect is a simple projection along the surface. The effects lets guests know that the sun has set and they are now traveling along the rocky perimeter of the mountain at night. It’s also meant to prove as a distraction for when the guests make the ascent up the lift hill.

The boat proceeds at the top of the lift hill and enters into one of the show buildings, hidden inside the mountain. The boat enters a tropical forest, at nighttime. Above, a bright moon lies, illuminated in the sky. Across the ceiling are several fiber optic stars, which twinkle, brightly. Surrounding the river passage are all sorts of exotic plants and trees. Vines and vegetation seem to surround the area, making the entire room seem much larger than it actually is. Ahead, you can hear some movement through the jungle. The boat proceeds down the river, approaching the location of the sound.

The boat curves with the river and the guests see gazelle grazing behind a set of bushes. The gazelle see the boat approaching and began to leap off. As they begin to leap, the guests see that the gazelles have bird-like wings and in mid-leap, begin to fly off into the jungle, out of sight. What strange creatures these are! The boat proceeds down the river. Suddenly, a massive jolt comes from the jungle. Tree branches snap and bend, as an elephant makes its way through. The elephant features a large rhinoceros horn and the body of a hippopotamus. The elephant-rhinoceros-hippo-like being raises his trunk and a jet of water proceeds outwards. The jet of water shoots over the boat, just missing the guests. The roof of the boat may get a little damp, but no need to worry; you’ll come out just fine.

The boat proceeds around the river and past a rocky ledge. At the top of the rocky ledge, large monkey creatures, with large giraffe necks jump up and down, unhappy about the approaching guests in their territory. In the monkeys’ hands are rocks of various sizes. As the boat passes through, it appears as though the monkeys throw the rocks at the boat. Jets of water from within the river burst up, making it seem like the rocks are being thrown towards the boat. The boat makes its way through the dispute, before proceeding further down the river.

In a grassy area to your left, giraffes with black and white zebra stripes are seen grazing. Along with the giraffes are antelope with kangaroo-like bodies and an animal, which looks something like combing a bull and an ox together. The animals are peacefully grazing, not acknowledging the guests whom pass by. The boat rounds a curve and notices a stone arched Mayan temple ahead. The structure isn’t all that intricate; a series of pillars connecting to eachother. Across the stone pillars are several etched drawing and lithographs. The boat continues through the center of the structure, letting guests have a good look at the temple’s architecture. The boat makes their way, ahead they can see another cavern. The guests enter the dark cavern, surrounded by darkness. A moment later, the boat descends down a brief waterfall.

In the next segment of the ride, the boats travel down an area of swampy marshland in the mountain. Tall leaves and moss dangle from the ceiling, adding a swampy feel to the area. Large trees and plants surround the area. In the river, large lily-pads are seen, floating along the surface. On the top of some lily-pads, bright, colorful frogs are seen, with flamingo orange beaks. The frogs “ribbit” as you pass them. All throughout the river are colorful LED lights, which illuminate different colors. An array of blue fireflies sweeps throughout the area. Suspended high from a few of the trees are several parrots, parakeets, tuscans and flamingos, all in a variety of unnatural, unheard of colors. In the far corner, a set of crocodiles, with a leopard pattern are seen. As you pass the creatures, they open their mouths and snap their jaws.

The boat leaves the area and enters into a cavern up ahead. The boat proceeds down a drop, which begins to curve, increasing the speed of the incline. As the boat descends, a roar is heard and the boat becomes surrounded in all sorts of blue, beautiful waterfalls. The waterfalls completely surround the boats, sometimes even splashing the roof. The formerly dark cavern is now light with blue and white colors. You feel the mist from the waterfall travel onto your skin. Could this be that huge waterfall crater that we saw on the outside of the mountain? The boat proceeds down the curved descent before it slows down and re-enters a show-building.

Ahead, the guests travel through a dark cavern. There is a rocky barrier to your left, in which the boat curves around. A loud roar is heard. From within the depths of the large river-turned-lagoon, a giant snake, with an iguana body emerges from within the lagoon on your right. The creature lets out a deep roar, before trying to snap at the guests. An orange steam emits from the creature’s mouth. After several close, but failed attempts, the creature proceeds to sink back under the sea. After a moment of silent movement, there is a sudden jolt on the bottom of the boat! The creature is right underneath the boat! A jet of water blasts, surrounding the boat in a plume of water. The guests may get a little wet here. The creature emerges on the left side of the boat. The creature still tries to snap, moving his head in close to the boat. The boat is out of reach however, and the creature proceeds back down into the watery depths of the lagoon.

The guests then proceed around the barrier, crossing into the next section of the cavern. Ahead, just off to your right, you can see the giant snake monster battle it out with a rather heroic lion, with angelic wings. The snake creature raises his head and tries to snap at the lion, but the monarchy of the jungle lets out a huge roar, which echoes throughout the cavern. The guests proceed past the two dueling monsters and enter into a small cavern, the sound of a distant waterfall approaching. The guests leave the two creatures behind, as the lion lets out another loud roar and screams are heard coming from the snake-like creature. As the guests enter the cavern, a shadow seems to fly over the boat.

Once the guests arrive inside the cavern, they see a large waterfall ahead. Above the waterfall, a ledge is located. The winged-lion creature stands before the group and bows to them. Above the lion is an opening, which shows the sun rising into the sky. As it does so, the lion’s wings, seem to sparkle and turn translucent, as if they were disappearing. The lion lets out a roar, as the boat descends down a forty five foot drop.

The boat lands in the waters surrounding the mountain with a huge splash. The boat proceeds back across the waters and into the loading dock, where the guests boarded their boats. The boat pulls into the unload dock, where the guests are released and exit the boats. The guests walk down the exit pathway, completely surrounded in tall trees and plants. The pathway opens up into a circle. In the center of the circle is a stone pillar with a lion atop it. On one side of the stone pillar, an inscription reads:

Australia
G’day, mate! Australia is one of the latest additions to Disney’s Animal Kingdom! This new section of the park takes the place of most of Rafiki’s Planet Watch. Again, the Petting Zoo animals will all find a home at Fort Wilderness.

Most of this new land is themed to the majestic Australian outback. The pathways are sandy and lined by the occasional shrub. A few trees provide some much-needed shade from the hot Florida sun.


Obviously, the land includes a “nature trail” a la Pangani Forest Exploration Trail. At the Kangaroo Flats Wildlife Trail, you can get up-close-and-personal with some of Australia’s most popular wildlife, such as koala bears, emus, dingos, Tasmanian devils, and of course, kangaroos. Nearby the attraction’s exit is the Outback Outpost gift shop, where you can buy yourself a boomerang. Hungry? Stop by The Bush for a vegetarian snack.

Hungry for some thrills? Check out Kookaburras Over Australia, a coaster based on one of Australia's most popular birds, the Kookaburra.

A small cave opening near the entrance to Kangaroo Flats Wildlife Trail leads to
a small subland themed to the Great Barrier Reef. Featured here is a relocated Finding Nemo: The Musical, which will have its script slightly changed, mainly to allow for some more original jokes not from the movie (a la the Aladdin musical at Disneyland). After the show, buy a Nemo plush at the Sleeping Whale Shoppe, or a sandwich at Bruce's Shark Shack, a small snack stand.

Another attraction here is Crush’s Turtle Twister, a wild mouse coaster in which guests join Crush for a dizzying adventure on the East Australian Current. Remember to rip it, roll it, and punch it!

Okay, hopefully this land will make up with how small Australia is (for now)...

North American Woods
Taking up the rest of the land where Rafiki’s Planet Watch once stood, North American Woods is another new addition to the park. This land pays tribute to the flora and fauna of our home country, the good U.S.A.

Pine trees, rocky cliffsides and waterfalls make guests feel as though they’ve entered the forest they most likely have in their own backyard. Those hungry can stop by the local seafood restaurant, the Hungry Bear Restaurant, or a fresh “Bear Claw” at the Polecat Pastry Shop. There are also two gift shops: the Fox and Hound Hunting Supply store and the Owl’s Nest. Occasionally, characters from Brother Bear, Pocahontas, Song of the South, and Bambi pop in for a meet-and-greet.

Of course, there’s a “wildlife trail” here. Dubbed the Moose Tracks Wildlife Expedition, guests follow a trail of pawprints through a simulated forest in search of wildlife. Beavers, badgers, eagles, raccoons, moose, deer, and owls can be found here.

There is, of course, a roller coaster here (a small one on the same level of thrills as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad) called The Salmon Run. Guests board large wood-carved fish and zip down, around, and through a set of waterfalls where salmon swim upstream. Nearby the attraction is a small habitat for woodpeckers, for those that are more interested in animals than thrills, and a playground themed to a Beaver Dam for the little ones.

That ranger station in the middle is the entrance for one of the park’s latest dark rides. Similar to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, Humphrey’s Photo Shoot sends jeep-riding guests equipped with cameras into the woods to take photos of wildlife, but Humphrey, a mischievous bear, wants to be in the most pictures than any other animal. Be careful not to take a picture of him!

There’s one last ride here. The Timberwolf Express is similar to Kilimanjaro Safaris in that it doubles as both a “wildlife trail” AND a ride. The animals seen on this attraction are a bit more ferocious than the ones at the Moose Tracks Wildlife Expedition, including mountain lions, bears, foxes, snakes, bison, and of course, wolves.

One of the park’s largest sections, guests who visit this land from a pathway in Africa will instantly be transported to India, where they’ll encounter some of the most ferocious beasts on the planet, from the Bengal tiger to the mysterious Yeti.

First things first, Kali River Rapids. I’m not sure how popular the ride is, but I personally find it a bit short (not bad, just short). Also, some of us don’t like being SOAKED TO THE BONE. Apparently, it also blocks access to another expansion pad in the park. So I’ll get rid of it.

This land, for example, could be used to expand the Maharaja Jungle Trek, adding such animals as Indian elephants, giant pandas (who doesn’t love pandas?), and Indian rhinos.

Most of the land will be used for a new dark ride called Journey Into the Jungle Book (an idea from DisneyManOne). A ride-through is below.

When you look at current trackless rides, the main point is just to see that the vehicles in front of you follow a different path that you take. To emulate this in a suspended ride, where you obviously must be supported by a physical track, this ride will have 3 different tracks that load in a straight line, but separate and pass through the scenes along different paths. The paths will not cross, that would be exceptionally complicated. In load and unload the 3 tracks follow parallel close to each other, with just enough room for the mechanism to sit over the track and hang the vehicle. The vehicles for each of the tracks are different so that the seating compartments line up in load and unload, meaning that the left vehicle cantilevers right under the track and the right vehicle cantilevers left. As far as I know, this system does not exist currently. I quickly drew a example track layout, but it is just lines, so no defined show scenes. Each of the 3 tracks are within an inch of 1046'.

I propose the attraction could be built nearby Flights of Wonder as there is plenty of open space there. This, of course, would expand out Anandapur, but the movie’s locale fits easily into this faux Indian setting. The facade of the building is a crumbling stone temple, like the temple of King Louie. Before you actually get into the attraction, a side path would lead to meet and greets with the characters from the movie, particularly Mowgli, Baloo and King Louie. Plus, I've heard that when the Journey into the Jungle Book show was here, you would often have King Louie’s monkeys causing mischief along the path to Discovery Island, trying to entice guests to go see the show. I would bring those monkeys back for meet and greets and general mayhem. They would be an awful lot of fun. Maybe there could be a rare sighting of Colonel Hathi, as well...or maybe even Shanti (that would be incredible).

The queue path takes us over the stream and into a cave to the left of the temple. In this cave, you'll find out that the queue actually doubles as an animal exhibit! Amongst the ruins that are being reclaimed by the jungle, I would put in exhibits for smaller, but no less important, critters of the Asian rain forest. As the ruins are being overgrown, little things like lizards, snakes and spiders would be moving in.
Some examples would include the green snake and the red tailed rat snake. Both of these reptiles are fairly commonly found in zoos and make great exhibits. A good creepy animal would be a hunstman’s spider. Many kinds of these spiders live in Asia. They are huge and hairy and looking at them makes your skin crawl. Perhaps there could be a submerged section of the ruins that is now home to the unusual snake-necked turtle. And I wouldn’t leave mammals out, either. Prevost squirrels do well in captivity, are fun to watch and, with their bizarre color pattern (mahogany fur on the belly and black and white up top), they make fun zoo animals.

We exit back out into the jungle, now inside the show building. We approach load, where we see a line of hanging vehicles, looking like carved tree trunks, hanging by vines from the canopy above. The vehicle seats 2 per row with 2 rows. This system's biggest issues is the access to the maintenance bay since it cannot just split and pass directly into a backstage area. After some thought, I decided that the best decision would be that at some point in the path, each track has a split that gently descends down to the basement, passes underneath the scenes of the attraction, and rises again in the maintenance building to the east of the show building. I also considered track splits into small bays that contain a track elevator, moving the vehicle down to the basement, but that would radically slow the process of moving vehicles.

Of course, the ride takes you through the story of The Jungle Book. Beginning right off quick with the wolves and the pack leader talking about Mowgli and Shere Khan, who hates men. The story (and the ride) then moves quickly to introducing Bagheera and then the Dawn Patrol. For this scene, I really want to have the cars vibrate, as if they're being shaken by the thunderous footsteps of the elephants. Leaving the elephants behind, we meet Baloo who does an awesome audio animatronic version of "The Bare Necessities.”Of course, the plot turns to the monkeys. On this attraction, you will have animatronic monkeys on both sides of you as well as above you with one coming awfully close to the top of your head all the while mocking Baloo and stealing his man cub. At this point, the ride takes you to King Louie himself singing “I Wanna Be Like You.” I envision this scene to be big and wide open, not unlike the Under the Sea part of the Little Mermaid dark ride. The end of this part of the scene would have the stone pillars coming close to crumbling and falling around you. Mowgli, of course, runs away again, and we meet Kaa dangling over the river looking at you with his hypnotic eyes.

We finally meet Shere Khan and the vultures. There's a great big climax scene, where Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera and the vultures all fight off Shere Khan. A neat fire effect would come into play. The boat ride then ends with Bagheera and Baloo watching as Mowgli and Shanti go off into the man-village. The exit to the attraction would be a replica of the man village (and since this is Disney this would likely be a gift shop--the Bare Necessities gift shop, if you will).

Now, let’s move on to another new land in the park…


The Amazon
We’ve visited Africa, we’ve visited Australia, we’ve visited the woods of North America, and we’ve visited Asia… But some of the coolest animals on the planet can be found in the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil.

Most of the land is shaded with a “canopy” of leaves, giving guests some well-deserved relief from the sun. Brightly-colored tree frogs and parrots hang out in the treetops. The snarl of a jaguar can be heard from the bushes.


Of course, there’s a “nature trail”: the Amazon Trail is a great place to get up-close-and-personal with such animals as howler monkeys, jaguars, toucans, owls, and giant anteaters.

There’s also the Amazon River Adventure. Serving as sort of a replacement for Kali River Rapids, unlike its predecessor this rafting adventure is longer, features live animals, and doesn’t get you QUITE as wet (you still get wet, but not ENTIRELY DRENCHED). Below is a ride-through by (who else?) DisneyManOne:

The back story for the attraction is that students from the local university have prepared a river rafting expedition to study a few of the more remote parts of the rainforest and have invited you along. The first half of the ride is very calm. As the raft passes through the dense jungle, Guests encounter other small fishing villages and a wide variety of birds, monkeys, and other exotic animals.

Guests then come upon the devastation of a logging camp, where hundreds of trees have been either chopped or burned to the ground. This scene presents a marked contrast to the natural beauty earlier in the ride.


From here the ride takes a tumultuous turn as the raft picks up speed and Guests encounter a series of violent rapids as they race past waterfalls, get spun around in whirlpools, and narrowly escape an attack by a school of piranhas before returning back to the village. The attraction would thus offer far more in the way of thrills than the current Kali River Rapids.

Those hungry for a good scare can drop in for a quick “bite” over at Anaconda Encounter. This theatrical show in the style of the old Alien Encounter at the Magic Kingdom sends those brave enough into the lair of a hungry anaconda: an enormous snake with a monstrous appetite!

Finally, there’s Rainforest Race, a suspended coaster giving riders the sensation of ziplining through the treetops. Hungry? Stop by the Base Camp Grille or the Adventurer’s Club for a bite to eat.

Finally, it's time to finish Disney's Animal Kingdom!

Ant Island

Sandwiched in between the Amazon and Dinoland U.S.A. is a new land themed on one of PIXAR’s most underrated movies (in my opinion): A Bug’s Life. It’s a perfect place for kids, but there’s fun to be had here for all ages.

For example, inside the big anthill in front of you is Anthill Madness, a coaster similar to Disneyland’s Matterhorn. Riders climb inside giant leaves and “dive” into the anthill, where they’re assigned with the task of finding food before the rainy season. Beware of giant birds!

P.T. Flea’s Circus has set up shop in this land. Like It’s Tough to Be a Bug!, the show features P.T.’s loveable band of circus bugs showing off their abilities and strengths. Of course, everything goes wrong. The show exits out into the P.T. Flea Market gift shop (held inside a giant Chinese Food container).

Smaller attractions here include Flik’s Flyers and Heimlich’s Chew Chew Train, which are virtually identical to their California counterparts. There’s also Flight of the Bumblebee, which is similar to Dumbo the Flying Elephant. Guests hop inside bumblebees and must listen to the instructions of the head bee, who stands in the center of the attraction. If you do, you get misted with “honey”. If not, your seat vibrates, implying that you’ve been “stung”. There’s also a snack stand (that looks like a giant can, might I add): Bugs Bites.

Dinoland U.S.A.
Compared to the other lands at Animal Kingdom, Dinoland U.S.A. is completely unrecognizable. DINOSAUR! has pulled a Tommorowland Transit Authority Peoplemover and been renamed DINOSAUR! Countdown to Extinction.



The Boneyard has not been changed at all. The rest of the land, however?

Gone is the unbelievably cheesy Chester and Hester’s Dino-Rama and its cardboard cutout dinosaurs. Where Triceratop Spin and the giant orange Apatosaurus once stood is a roller coaster called The Excavator. This coaster carries the “Dino Institute” theming from the other attractions, the idea being that some college dropouts that got jobs there built the coaster out of random wood and set it up around the dig site. It uses the same technology as the Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars at Hong Kong Disneyland. And if you look closely, you might spot one of the cardboard cutout dinosaurs from Primeval Whirl buried under the rubble…

Another new addition here is Prehistoric Plunge, a log flume attraction that sends guess back to the Ice Age. No, the mammoths don’t speak in the voice of Ray Romano.

Finally, we have They’re Still With Us: Dinosaurs Today, a nature trail (yes, ANOTHER ONE) featuring animals that were around back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. And that just about does it for Dinoland U.S.A., and the park in terms of attractions.
