Trip Report MAY THE SPORK BE WITH YOU!!! - a Kid-Free F&W Trip Report

Hi all!!! Well, we’re back from our 6 kid-free days at WDW (yes, much sadness), but now I at least get to share our trip with all of you! If you’re new to my trip reports, my name is Sandy. I did a pre-trip report for this one, but it wasn’t exactly my best work…i.e. I neglected it much of the time. Bad Sandy! Oh well, the real report will be significantly better. I swear, this is probably one of my best trips to WDW- EVER!!!

As many of you know…my reports are heavily picture infused things…mainly because I take TONS of pics so you can “walk” along with me. I took close to 4,000 pics this time…some better than others…but all to help paint the full picture of this trip. I will get into all of the pictures and heavy duty Disney stuff, but first a little background on the days leading up to the trip. Sorry- not much in the way of pictures in this portion, but I promise you…there really are TONS of pictures to come.

So, it’s the evening of November 4th and I’m prepping for our departure on November 7th. DH gets home as I’m putting our girls to bed and informed me that his mom was coming by to talk to us. Ok, so I’m now freaking out. His mom was supposed to have the girls stay with her so we could go on vacation, so this didn’t sound good. We’ve also have really bad luck before all of our recent WDW trips. I think we’d all agree that the car accident last year was the worst, but I am starting to think we’re cursed. In any event, my MIL comes by and drops a bit of a bomb on us. It’s really sad and scary stuff…I’m not at liberty to share the details…but from a safety standpoint, we couldn’t have the girls stay with her at her house. Thankfully, she was willing to stay at our house- so the big problem was solved, but now I had to work in time to deep clean the house. I mean, I was planning on a light cleaning…but I had to pack for me as well as for the girls (school day stuff, softball stuff, etc.) + I had to make a birthday cake!

Many of you know me from the Cake Talk thread over in the dining section, but I also make my own custom cakes on the side. My younger one’s bday is Nov 6th, so I had to have a cake the day before we went out of town…and of course she wanted something crazy (gee, I wonder who encourages this kind of madness??? ;) ). She wanted a 'fluffy' killer whale cake…just like her furry Shamu-esque plush named “Shammie.” Thankfully, the cake was fairly easy…well, minus the nearly 7 tubs of black food coloring I needed to achieve black buttercream. So, here’s the finished product as well as a pic with my ‘model.’

Day 1

So, the house is clean, the cake is done and we’re pretty much packed…and it’s after midnight…so, it’s officially our departure day!!! Our flight from Houston Hobby was supposed to take off at 6:15am, so we had to leave the house around 4am. I got about 3 hours of sleep, packed up the car, said good-bye to the girls (who were still in bed- asleep - MIL was in the guest bedroom), and drove to the airport. The roads were dead, but the airport was surprisingly busy. It took a while to get through security, but we at least had a good laugh when checking our bags. The ladies helping us overheard that it was a kid free trip to Disney and they made sure everyone in the area knew we were heading there without the kids. Most of the people just looked really confused, but we got a good laugh.

After DH forgetting to empty his pockets at security and having some minor issues, we make our way out to the gate and wait. Hey, at least it looks like we’re going to be on time.

15721134116_2d92fb6622_z.jpg

Boarding and take off are pretty uneventful. I’m utterly exhausted and fall asleep shortly after. I mean, I tend to sleep on planes even when I’m well rested, but this was that uncontrollable … sort of passing out … kind of deep sleep. I didn’t sleep for the entire flight. In fact, I woke up to a lovely cloud filled sky…

15558965649_e7978f5385_z.jpg

Actually, shortly after this pic the clouds started to clear and I could tell we were approaching the Florida coastline…

15559416708_b0ba8c3a46_z.jpg

15124895804_6e5b2f0ec1_z.jpg

Ok, I actually took a series of pics as we approached. I guess this is the air equivalent of people taking pics of the state signs when crossing the state line on a road trip…

15558970619_5758715a2c_z.jpg

15744851845_37271be2ef_z.jpg

I also realized that we were flying over the Tampa/St Pete area. My parents lived just outside of St Pete for a few years after leaving Gainesville and before heading to the Ft. Lauderdale area. I took this pic because I noticed a large pink building right at the coastline. Anyone who knows this area knows this is the Don Cesar hotel. Unfortunately, even when cropping, blowing up and saturating the colors in the pic below…you can’t really see that there’s a big pink hotel…but it’s there- I swear it is!!!

15559691397_a7cb688a40_z.jpg

Now, I really enjoy being able to pick out familiar sites from the air. I regret not having my DSLR out with the telephoto hooked up for this, but you’re just going to have to take my word for it with the pics below. See, I usually can pick out Epcot from the air with no problem- in fact, it's why I intentionally sat us on this side of the plane. I mean, the “Swalphin” is super obvious and SSE kind of stands out. Still, for whatever reason, I couldn’t find them for the life of me. Then I spotted something…something I’ve never noticed before from the air. I’m sitting there thinking, “man, that white blob over there kind of reminds me of Space Mountain.” Then I realize the buildings I’m looking at to the right are BLT and the Contemporary!!! And while it was more a white blip from the air…I could see…THE CASTLE!!! And as my eyes adjusted and started picturing the WDW map in my head, I realized I could see the Poly, the GF, and yes…I was also able to pick out SSE and the Swalphin too! I could see all of this until shortly before landing. Talk about WELCOME HOME!!! I'll share one of these pics, but it's really tough to spot any of this...

15742948251_c0b2b0bf94_z.jpg

I tried cropping and zooming, but it’s still really hard to pick them out…but I swear they are there!
So, landing was uneventful and we were soon ready for the first “ride” of our trip.

15786077812_4d55c3535d_z.jpg

Kind of sad...I am now using the DSLR (vs my phone), but I'm so jittery from excitement that I can't take a decent shot!

I also had temporary amnesia…or magical euphoric memory loss (your pick)…and forgot where to find DME. Of course, the jetways now have it labeled on there…but I guess I also had some selective blindness upon arrival. So, I sucked it up, went to Information, and got directions to DME. I was kind of embarrassed, but clearly I needed the help. At least the info was correct…

15786075722_8f80bceeb0_z.jpg

As we get down to the ground level and start heading towards the DME area, I start seeing DME and DCL buses…and I’ll admit it, I got kind of misty. Thankfully, DH didn’t notice because I would have been mocked considerably. We had our magic bands on, so getting through everything was a breeze. In fact, the only tough part was convincing DH that our checked baggage would be delivered to our hotel. It’s like he’s never been to WDW before!!! We’re directed to line 2 and make our way all the way to the front.

15599083698_069b6c63e9_z.jpg

We’re the only ones there and it kind of looks like we just missed a bus for our grouping of resorts. Just then the CMs manning that section of lines asked which resort we were headed to for our trip. I said we’re going to the Poly and magically, they opened the ropes and led us out to a bus. Sadly, it was a magical yellow Mears bus, but hey…it would get us where we needed to go.

15786065312_56b5300a1a_z.jpg

Although, I was kind of jealous with all of the DCL buses around us…just something about having the Disney labeling on the bus. OK- feeling quite shallow right about now!

15599673840_09c0b70d1a_z.jpg

Still, I really can’t complain…we were on a bus, that bus was nearly full and about ready to go. I think we waited less than 5 minutes to start heading towards the resorts. This was also our first time seeing the new DME video and can I just say…I HATE IT!

15782627781_b6f1dd5e43_z.jpg

Before ever crossing onto Disney property, we saw a sign that Disney was near!

15782619541_40b2729c6a_z.jpg

Yeah- the Characters in Flight balloon is kind of a give-a-way that Disney is near! Shortly after spotting the balloon, one of the best views on earth came into sight…

15784481195_c639c6a9a0_z.jpg

I was obviously not in a good seat to snap any good pics, but I think most of us know that we were getting ready to pass under the Maingate!!! I remember being really frustrated after this as well. I wanted to check in on Facebook, basically confirming that we’re officially “inside the MAGIC BUBBLE,” but it wasn’t until we were farther in that I was able to get ‘Walt Disney World” to come up as a check in option. i.e. I didn’t want any of the parks or resorts. OK- minor annoyance…I know!

More to come on Day 1! Thanks for reading!

So, we’re stuffing our faces and I see Tigger making his way through our section of CP. The section wasn’t fully seated, so it doesn’t take very much time for him to get to us. I’ve never done a character meal without the kids and was worried that the characters might just gloss over us…but no, Tigger clearly wanted to stop and say hi. I think he thinks my spork is funny!

15638373109_801c1469fb.jpg

Oh, I forgot to show you how I decorated my spork.

15204753113_1457709d0c.jpg

(the hostess came back to check on my work and suggested hair, so he got some yellow hair after this pic was taken)

15204207534_0f3cf52bf3.jpg

I know most of you have not had this problem…but I had a lot of issues with photographing my spork! (clearly)

Shortly after Tigger, we had Piglet come by the table. Yeah…he also thinks the spork is funny.

15204745483_5d7767157b.jpg

I really wasn’t planning on eating again until dinner and we were at a buffet, so here’s round 2 of my food. I mean, how can I pass up smoked salmon and Pooh’s Puffed French Toast. Good stuff!

15638994747_8f57bf1fd5.jpg

Sporky looks quite happy with my choices!

15800514056_68419b5482.jpg

(see, he now has hair!)

We saw Eeyore off in the distance and we really thought we’d miss him. I don’t know if they changed up the rotation, but suddenly we have a Donkey at the table…and I don’t think he knows what to make of the spork.

15204193834_8381d38817.jpg

He also insisted on a pic with DH.

15204727413_e46556acfb.jpg

So, that just leaves Pooh. I saw Pooh when we first came in, but he was leaving our section. I knew the odds would be really slim for us having Pooh stop by our table. After seeing the first 3 characters, I also suddenly realized…I don’t want to meet Pooh. Well, at least not at CP. I associate CP with Sammie. Pooh has been her fave since she was a baby and he still is. I was honestly afraid I might start crying if I did a M&G with Pooh in CP without her. We were done eating, it was just a little bit after 9, and I was ready to hit the park. So, we paid the check and left...well, not without snapping a pic of Pooh along the way.

15204173894_92a5404ce4.jpg

(yeah...choking up right about now)

****OK, that's all for tonight. I'll hopefully get to post some more tomorrow. Thanks for reading :)

That is a fun ideal for the kids, to color a spork and that would be there creation to take care of while in the park. Loving the trip report and all the pictures. Following along.

I have to say that I agree about the wreaths on Main Street. I understand why they did it, but I much prefer the garlands! Can't wait to read more!

I just kind of hate that it will never be like this again...

It's almost like the egg project they have kids do in school. Of course, I cracked my egg. oops! Thanks! :)

Love the pics of CP since I am so ready to finally try it. And my Tigger. LOVE!!!! And I have to admit the castle pics made me tear up. Thank you.

Yes! You MUST try CP! Now, of course I'm going to recommend a pre-park opening breakfast. He was a good Tigger, but the one we'll encounter a few days later totally trumped him. Thanks! Love those castle pics as well. I think that's why I love having at least 1 pre-park opening something in MK per trip. MUSUA and the hub can get so crowded during the day...so, being able to enjoy it in a fair amount of peace is priceless. Getting castle pics like that is the bonus!

Ok...so, I was looking back over my last few posts and I think my time estimations for the morning were a hair off. Things were probably about 5-10 minutes later than I noted. I know...it's really not a big deal, but it would annoy me to no end had I not noted this fact.

Back to day 2...

So, it’s a little after 9…our first FP+ (Peter Pan) isn’t until like 9:25a-10:25a, so we had to decide what to do first. SDMT was out for standby since they let everyone in so early these days…in other words, the wait was already over 120 minutes! So, we start walking…

And I guess I just miss the kids!

15822181851_a7de752716.jpg

Which is funny, because we’d have a joke all trip that mommy doesn’t miss the girls

I had mentioned numerous times that I didn’t want to go home…so DH would be like, “mommy doesn’t miss you. She’s staying here and you’ll have to come here if you want to see her!” Yes, that’s a great idea…let’s all move to WDW!

See...I'm still with them. Clearly a sign that I miss them...

15638187289_6b550eb1f1.jpg

I think many of you may recall that our girls are absolutely terrified of HM…especially the graveyard. As a result, I haven’t ridden HM in ages without having to keep one of them from freaking out mid-ride. And for those who haven’t seen my previous reports, minus the 2010 trip where DH thought they’d warm up to HM…we haven’t forced them to ride this one. They just always ask – insisting they’re no longer scared of the “ghosties.” In any event…I had a blast just taking in all of the details that I pretty much never get to appreciate.

And we’re out…

15204571953_c6104771d8.jpg

And we're on the move again...

15638821507_239a4dce61.jpg

And LOOK!!!! It’s the prettiest bathroom- EVER!!! Oh how I love Potty Time with Rapunzel! I know, it gets old, but I just love saying it.

15638812957_48c6334844.jpg

It's funny b/c DH was all proud to tell me that there were a bunch of Pascal's hiding in the landscaping. I reminded him that I pointed that out to him last trip. Again, I'm mean!

So, we’re now in our FP+ window for Peter Pan, but we decided it would be better to use our first FP+ at the end of the window and our 2nd at the beginning of that window…i.e. so we had time to do other things without having to run back to make the various windows. So, you can probably tell which way I’m heading and surely know what I suggest…

Oh yeah!!! IASW!!! (@ThatBrunette not sure if you're reading, but thought you might appreciate this part)

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! Of course, he does not share my love for the Happiest Cruise that Ever Sailed. His loss! So, I tell him he can go do WHATEVER…I don’t care…I’m riding IASW and may ride it twice if I feel I need it. So he heads off…and I honestly have no clue what he did, but here I am – face to face…with The Face!

Yes, it’s the front of the boat. And I have it all to myself!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t know if the CM saw me stopping to take pics, if he noticed my IASW bag with Mary Blair’s concept art, or my IASW face charm on my other bag… but I guess he kind of knew. i.e. when he told me I had it all to myself, it was sort of like he was acknowledging that this ride was special for me. It actually got me a little misty.

I was kind of shocked, but we hadn’t really hit any log jams until the very end. And then we just sat in this position for some time.

15203911734_dedf2c63bd.jpg

They were trying to unload an older gentleman who needed a lot of assistance. I could see a number of people were bothered, but I guess I noticed something none of them saw. This man…who was likely in his 80s…was overjoyed to have just ridden this ride. He was grateful for the assistance he was receiving as well, but ultimately, he just looked so incredibly happy. So, while I didn’t love waiting either, the look on this man’s face was priceless! Totally worth it!

OK, so back to snapping pics as we move forward.

And it’s time for me to leave the boat and bid IASW adieu…for now!

15203881134_7bdef41f1e.jpg

The delay from the stoppage was pretty lengthy, so riding a 2nd time just didn’t seem prudent. So, I exited and started looking around for DH. I eventually spotted him and he was all like “what took you so long???” I brush it off and tell him it’s time to go to Neverland!

…and we’re on board and ready to go!

15204414783_cfaa001b26.jpg

I know it’s a short ride, but I still love this one. From waving good-bye to Nana, flying over London (more tears!!!) and hearing DH say crazy things about the mermaids…it’s a win for me. It’s not worth a long wait, but I still like to ride it.

This was also one of the rides where the CMs seemed really frustrated. There was one woman up at the 2nd FP+ reader who was really pretty gruff with everyone. I know it’s frustrating because people get confused and you have to repeat the same directions all day, but it just rubbed me the wrong way. It was also in this line that I realized just how incredibly superior the convenience of MBs are vs. using a card. There was a family ahead of us with an infant who were using cards. I guess they didn’t realize you had to scan again when you got to the front of the FP line. They held up the line trying to dismantle half of their stuff trying to get to the cards they just put away.

We exit Peter Pan...

...but where to next?

***OK, that's it for now. Not feeling well, but I should be posting more tomorrow. Thanks for reading!!!!!

I can get impatient too, but as you said this would be well worth it!

And I'm glad you went "nuts" with your camera. I'm enjoying all of your detailed pictures!

It's funny, because people always say to "stop and smell the roses" at the Disney parks. While it is nice to stop and recognize all of the little details, I think sometimes the proverbial roses are often just other park patrons enjoying themselves.

Great! Because I think I went more and more camera crazy as the trip progressed. I'm uploading day 3 right now, and I'm not past early afternoon because of it! :)

IASW all by yourself in a boat all by yourself. Ohhhhhhh Mmmmmmm Ggggggg!!!! Soooo awesome. I would have been grinning just like the 80 year old man. Happy. Happy. Joy. Joy. And thank you for all the pics.

It was such a special experience :) Obviously, I had to stay in my seat, but I slid back and forth for the entire ride.

No prob on pics :) Trust me...there are MANY more to come. Thankfully, DH has changed his game of preference... so my uploading no longer impacts his game play. It just bites that I can only upload 250 at a time. I've tried opening Flickr in multiple windows, but Flickr doesn't play nice under many normal conditions- so this kind of stress just makes it do very bad things. :devilish:

So glad that I am not the only wife who has to worry about her husbands gaming. Ugh. Thankfully he is now totally engrossed with a game on the iPad and it doesn't totally suck up bandwidth like the PS3 and Ps4 did.

And we’re walking again…

We’re a bit early, so I drag DH into something I haven’t done since I was a kid…

I think he slept through it…which is not an easy task as it’s not super comfy seating…but I loved it and all of its cheesy goodness. I also loved that while it was a small audience, many that were in there were familiar with the show and were totally into it.

He needed some refreshments (obviously), so I just stood there taking pics…

Nope…not riding Splash this trip. I really thought he’d want to since he grew up with the Tales of Uncle Remus, but it turns out…he doesn’t really like this ride?!!?!? Well, I didn’t feel like getting wet, so we moved on.

Walking some more…

15800084236_2be9ca8bfc_z.jpg

We arrive...but DH wants to take a detour.

15637918979_c7251fb0f7_z.jpg

We decided to head over towards the restrooms by Splash…

And here I go again making Mickey’s from the tiles.

I head outside to take some more pics…

DH can’t see them without talking about Sammie meeting them in 2010. We have this adorable pic of her…wearing her red ladybug raincoat and red mary janes…captured mid-run…arms wide open…towards Jessie. And as soon as he came out and saw them, he reminded me of that 2010 pic. I was also impressed that he remembered that they moved the M&G. Later on in the trip, we’d pass the spot of the old M&G and he actually stopped and said “that’s where it happened.” I was kind of shocked…good shocked.

(couldn't decide which I like better)

It’s so funny…I remember thinking this ride was just OK as a kid, but in recent years, I’ve really grown to love it. Of course, we couldn’t board our train without bringing up Kendall’s first ride on here and how she announced in this super worried tone that she didn’t think anyone was actually driving this train. Crazy kid!

And we're making our way through the queue...

I also think it’s funny…I got this very clear pic of the back of this guy’s head while we’re riding…

And then he’s clearly in 2 of my pics on the way out. Not sure why this jumped out at me or why it’s cracking me up, but either way…it amuses me!

...sad...the ride is almost over...
