Trip Report UPDATE 11/2 "Anyone have change for $100?" It's all about the Bennys, baby! A Girls Cruise TR!

Hey everyone! Since we’ve been back from this trip for over 6 months now and I’ve taken another WDW trip and another cruise, I figured it was time to write this report! I’m not sure I have ever anticipated a trip to WDW more in my life than I anticipated this one! Was it because I was going to be going on my first Disney cruise (and first cruise EVER!!)? Is it because I would finally get to stay at my dream resort, the Polynesian? Was it because I was finally getting to meet all these awesome gals from WDWMagic in person for the first time? Well…. I’d like to think it was a combo of ALL of those things! :)

When I first read about the girls cruise, it was October 2011, almost a full 2 years before the cruise was planned. I did some creeping on the thread before I actually even thought about joining in. I was still sort of “new” to the boards and wasn’t sure I would “fit in” so to speak. The more I read about it, the more fun it sounded. I ran the idea past my mother and my sister to see if they would like to go and sure enough, they were in! We officially booked the first of January! We planned on staying 1 night pre-cruise and 3 nights post cruise so our trip would be Saturday Sept 7-Sunday Sept 15. We rented points for Bay Lake Tower after the cruise and had originally booked Wilderness Lodge for before the cruise. My sister and I decided to switch it up and change WL to the Polynesian because A – It’s my dream resort and B – We wanted to celebrate my Mom’s retirement. So we changed it without her knowing. We were originally going to hide the DME tags from her and tell her on DME since we knew that WL, Contemp, the Poly and GF all shared the same DME. We decided to tell her earlier though at her retirement party. She offered to pay us for her portion but we said no, it was our treat!

Anywho, though the cruise was still over a year and a half away when we booked, the time flew by. Over the course of that year and a half, we had many group chats and chatted in the cruise thread. As the cruise crept closer, I knew that I absolutely could not wait to meet this wonderful group of ladies! I knew it would be the BEST time! And was it ever!!

Saturday Sept 7, 2013 – It’s time! It’s time!!!

My alarm went off bright and early Saturday morning at 2:30am. I was already packed and ready to go so Mom picked us up at 3:30am and we were off! We were flying out of Manchester NH on Southwest. Even though Portland’s airport is literally a mile from our house, Manchester had a non-stop flight, with better flight times and was cheaper. So we made the hour and 20 minutes trek to NH. No biggie!

We arrive at MHT at 5am. We hauled our luggage out of the car (all 10 bags! Eek!!) and waited for the shuttle to the main terminal. The bus driver pulled up and opened the door. As we struggled to get our bags onto the bus, the driver just sat there. No offer to help us, nothing. I have flown out of MHT less than a year earlier and the driver then was super helpful. But not this guy!! Mom got in the bus and we handed all our bags up to her. It took us a few minutes to get everything on and all Mr. Bus Driver did was sit there. This trip was NOT off to a good start! That all changed though after we sat down and “Dude Looks Like a Lady” came on the radio. I immediately thought of Rock N Roller Coaster and the fun week that lay ahead of us and pushed Mr. Bus Driver to the back of my head. I immediately texted @plaz10 and told her. I knew she was awake and either at the airport or on her way and would totally understand my excitement for hearing this song! When we reached the terminal, we schlepped all our bags off and bid Mr. Bus Driver a snarky farewell.

We went into the terminal and the security line was pretty much non-existent. We grabbed some Dunks and waited for boarding.

The flight was uneventful and we landed 20 minutes early! Wooooo!! We arrived at DME, hopped on the bus and headed to WDW at 10:30 on the dot!

Typical DME selfie!!

We're heeeeereeeeee!!

We made a stop at WL first and a part of my heart was sad because we weren’t staying there. As we stopped at the Contemporary, I wondered if we should have just stuck with WL since we knew we liked it. What if we hated the Poly? What if Mom hated it? We knew she loved WL, maybe we shouldn’t have changed it! My mind was busy with these thoughts as we made our way from the Contemp to the Poly, but as we made that right turn, pulled up to the gate and I saw the sign reading Polynesian Resort, all my worries went away. I KNEW we had made the right choice!

We got off the bus and were greeted by the amazing waterfalls and lush greenery of the Poly’s entrance. A CM put lei’s on us and said “welcome home!”. Not going to lie, I teared up just a bit! Mom and Ashley both looked at me waiting for the waterworks but thankfully I had my sunglasses on (It’s kind of a running joke with us that I cry over everything so they always look to see if I’m crying over the smallest little thing! Meanies!!! Haha)

We were led into the lobby where we checked in. The CM was looking for our Magic Bands but I told him we got them already. We had wanted to request Tahiti but it was closed as the Poly was starting to begin it’s refurb! We thought we weren’t going to be able to swim in the volcano pool, but the closure of that was a couple days after we left, so we lucked out! We request Tuvalu instead and were given our request. When we had originally booked, we wanted a standard garden view but when I called, it wasn’t showing up anymore (it was online though) the CM told us she could give us a lagoon view though for just $14 more. Well, you don’t have to twist my arm for that! SOLD! And for only $14 more than a garden view.

We took the long way to Tuvalu so we could take in the grounds of the resort. So beautiful.

We were on the ground floor in Tuvalu room 1413. Mom and Ashley let me open the door and be the first one into the room. As I pushed open the door and walked in, taking in the newly refurbished beautiful room, I could feel the tears again. This time, I didn’t care. I burst into tears and said “I can’t believe we are actually staying here!” Some of you might think I am a little weird, crying because of a resort.. Even though it was only for one night, we were staying at the Polynesian! From my first visit in 2001, when I was just 18 and we saw the luau and I first fell in love with the resort, to the many subsequent trips to Kona Café and Ohana trip after trip, I hoped every time that we would someday be able to stay there! That someday we would be able to just walk back to our room after leaving the Grand Ceremonial House instead of going back to another room at another resort. The Polynesian is more than just a resort to me. It is paradise. It was a place I had my heart set on staying for so many years. A place that I would longingly look at from the monorail as we glided past on the Express beam. I would look down at people wandering the grounds, wondering which building they were staying in and thinking how lucky they were. And now we were the lucky ones! FINALLY!

I took some pictures of the room. I LOVED the size of it!

And I loved the bathroom. The only thing I didn’t like, and I believe @fractal mentioned this in his TR too, that the hook for the towel was on the other side of the wall, next to the toilet. Made it a little hard to reach the towel! Also I wasn’t a fan of the sink IN the bathroom, probably since we’re so used to the sink being outside the bathroom but it was only for one night so it wasn’t really an issue.

The closets were cool and we loved having the couch in the room. Ashley was the tough luck loser who had the couch that night while Mom and I each had the bed. Ahhhhh, lucky us! (I wouldn’t be laughing later on in the trip when I was climbing up and down from the pull down bed on the cruise though…. Meh.)

I had yet to look out at the view, so I pulled the curtains back and actually gasped when I saw the view. Slightly to the left was the wedding pavilion and the Grand Floridian. To the right was the boat dock and the Contemporary and straight ahead was Cinderella Castle. We couldn’t see TOO much of it but had Wishes been scheduled for that night, it would have been perfect. Unfortunately, it was Night of Joy and there were no fireworks. Booooo!! We had other plans anyway but had we not, it would have been awesome to watch Wishes from our patio! (Spoiler alert, we ended up NOT having plans later that night so it was very much a bummer that Wishes wasn’t happening!)

We were starving at that point and didn’t have plans until later that afternoon, so we changed into our swimsuits and headed to the GCH. It was time to try Captain Cook’s!!

There were a couple things I wanted to try but most importantly, I wanted to try the Poly chip! Jess ( @plaz10 ) and I had been discussing these beauties for a bit before the cruise. She was staying at Bay Lake Tower with Siobhan ( @Tiggerish ) that night but we made plans to meet up a bit later. I opted for the Aloha Pork Sandwich which came with Asian slaw on top and the Poly chips!

Ashley got the chicken sandwich and fries and I can’t remember what Mom got. The pork sandwich was delish!! And the Poly chips… Oh Mylanta! Were those delicious! I’m eating some Wasabi almonds right now but boy do I wish I were eating those chips instead! The chips were the first of MANY ridiculously good foods I was going to try over the course of the trip! Ashley like her chicken sandwich and Mom liked… whatever it was that she got!! Lol

Mixology was fun, even for this non-drinker!

I completely understand what you mean by having that one spot. My spot in WDW has always been right in front of The Plaza restaurant, with the most beautiful view of the Castle. I may have cried when I realized that view is temporarily gone.

I know exactly where you are talking about. The view there is so pretty! :)

OK, so back to the fun!!!

Thursday Sept 12 - Debarkation :( But back to WDW!

I slept soundly through the night, until I heard us pulling into port. The ship started to vibrate so it woke me up. I peeked outside and saw the sky was just starting to get light and I could also see land. Boooooo. It was so depressing. I couldn’t get back to sleep so I just laid in my bed checking my cell phone.
All too soon, our alarm went off at 7 and we had to get up and get moving. Even though we still had 3 nights at WDW, I was sad. The cruise had far exceeded my expectations and I couldn’t wait to get back on a Disney ship in the future! Oh, I forgot to post in my last update, we did rebook! We will be going on a 7 night Western Caribbean on the Fantasy November 8-15. Yes, in just 59 days! We will stop in Cozumel Mexico, Grand Cayman, Falmouth Jamaica and Castaway. So excited to finally have a full week on the ship! We also have booked a 5 night on the Wonder in April!

Sorry for the messiness, but here is the room with the upper bed pulled down. Surprisingly it wasn’t that uncomfortable.

We gathered our things and at 8 o’clock, gave the room one last glance. We headed out into the hallway and closed the door to room 8178. As we were making our way down the stairs (the elevators were super crowded) we saw @HollyBelle. We hugged her and bid her safe travels hoping one day our paths would cross again.

Breakfast was in the dining room you had eaten at the previous night so for us, it was Animator’s! YAY! We sat at a table with Shannon and Courtney. Kelly and Tammy were at another table just finishing up.
Tell me this isn’t the saddest menu you have ever seen?! :(

Mmmmmm… donuts! Yes please!!

I just love the dishware here! I happen to have 2 of the paintbrush butter knives from AP that I got for Christmas. I love them!!

I had “For a Sweet Journey” which was buttermilk pancakes, blueberry pancakes, whole wheat pancakes and a waffle (one of each) It was yummy. Also had some OJ.

Ashley had “Egg for the Road” (obviously. She loves her eggs!)

I’m not sure what Mom had because I don’t see the exact thing on the menu. So let’s just say she had something with corned beef hash and bacon.

All too soon, we were giving hugs to everyone and heading out to disembark. As we were saying goodbye, it really hit me just how awesome this group of ladies was. We all had the absolute BEST time (as indicated in all the TRs about this trip that have been posted.) and saying goodbye was harder than I thought it would be. Luckily, since the trip I have had the pleasure of seeing @PartOfYourWorld a couple times for lunch, I got to spend time with @sweetpee_1993 and her family along with @Disneyfalcon out in Disneyland and just Saturday I met up with @plaz10 in Boston for some drinks and lunch. The mutual love for Disney and this forum brought us together but these friendships formed stretch FAR beyond this forum and far beyond WDW. And those kind of friendships are the best kind to have. I will be forever grateful that this cruise brought so many great ladies into my life :) I can honestly say now that it's rare if a full day goes by without me talking to at least one person from WDWMagic, be it on Instagram, Facebook or over text.messaging (All the ladies from this cruise and @blackthidot included. But he's kind of a lady too though...)

Anywho, the line was REALLY long to disembark the ship (afterwards I was told for some reason it was unusually long and it’s never like that. Guess Mickey just wanted to keep us on his ship for a little while longer!) I gave the atrium one last glance and could feel my eyes watering. I didn’t want to cry in front of so many people so I threw my sunglasses on. A few minutes after that, I stepped onto the gangway and off the ship. The cruise was officially over :(

We grabbed our bags and made it through customs without any issues. Once we got through, we were directed to head left where a bus to WDW would be waiting for us. I reminded myself we still had some fun times in store for us at WDW so I cheered up. As we waited for the bus to fill, we looked out at the massive ship. Here’s Ashley looking sad :(

As we pulled away, it started to rain. See, even Mother Nature was sad we were leaving the ship. Bye bye, Disney Dream, see ya real soon, hopefully!

It was an uneventful ride to WDW and soon we were seeing this sign. Yay for being back in the WDW bubble!

We stopped at Port Orleans Riverside and Wilderness Lodge before finally stopping at our home for the next 3 nights…. Bay Lake Tower! I was really excited to stay here since it was so close to MK and had monorail transportation to Epcot! Unfortunately, BLT and the Contemporary as a whole did not live up to my expectations. To say I absolutely despised it would be a bit much, but it’s close to that. I know I will probably never stay there again if I have a choice.

Everything started off promising as we checked in with ease. Bell services took our bags and told us they would be delivered to our room shortly. We headed over to BLT and found we were in a studio on the first floor, looking towards the middle of the tower. Not bad. The room was pretty spacious, especially by the door there was an area where we stored our suitcases, but I didn’t really care for the décor. Too modern and… contemporary for me. I know, I know, it’s part OF the Contemporary, but I was hoping in real life I would like Ii, but I just didn’t care for it. I didn’t feel like I was in Disney, ya know?

And this also is where the trip report title comes into play, again. Ashley loves the Jimmy Fallon credit card commercial (I think it might be for CapitalOne?) where he talks about "making it rain". When we got to BLT and were getting our stuff for the day and putting stuff in the safe, I questioned why she didn't get smaller bills, as she mostly had hundreds. She said she probably should have cause then she would have more bills to use to "make it rain" at Disney. She then proceeded to say she liked having her Benny's instead. She said she would bring 1 Benny to Epcot with her and leave the other Benny's in the safe together so they wouldn't be lonely. She's very strange....

As we were freshening up, I realized my park ticket and magic band were in my bag that bell services had. No worries, I called down and let them know we needed our bags ASAP. I asked if I should come up and get what I needed but they said they would send someone down. 5 minutes passed, 10 minutes passed… No bell service…. 15 minutes passed and at this point I was really ticked off. At 20 minutes we decided to walk down and see if we spotted bell services on their way. We split up and Mom and Ashley walked through the back entrance while I walked through the front since we weren’t sure which route they would take. When I got up front, there were all our bags, still sitting on the luggage cart. It hadn’t even moved since we checked in. I walked over to the CM and explained that I called to have the bags brought to our room 20 minutes prior and they hadn’t even been moved. He acted like he could have cared less. He wheeled the cart over and I went over to my bag and got out what I needed. He smiled and wished me a great afternoon, clearly wanting a tip and I smiled and turned and walked away. I was really angry because had I known no one was coming right down with the bags, we would have walked up. It wasn’t a big deal. But instead we wasted half an hour of our day waiting around.

We headed up to the monorail, ready to have some fun in the parks. Our park for today…. Epcot!!!

Ahhhhh.... my beautiful Poly!

We arrived at 1pm and headed over to the Land. We were hungry!! We scooped up FP for Soarin and got some lunch. Ashley and I had the rotisserie chicken and an iced Mocha. This is my favorite meal at Sunshine Seasons. I only tried it after @blackthidot said how awesome it was. Normally I would never try anything he suggests but I did and I was glad. He was right! First time for everything, huh? Mom got a sandwich. I also got a red velvet whoopie pie because I'm a pig like that. So good!!

After lunch we used our FP for Soarin, then rode again with our FP+.

***Now this is the point of the trip where I stopped taking notes. It was easy to note stuff on the cruise. But at the parks, I’m usually always forgetting to jot stuff down (or type it in my phone) so I have no notes from the rest of the trip! I think I took enough photos though that I will be able to piece everything together***

Thanks for the update. I have to agree with you on the decor at BLT and CR. Though I've never stayed at either, the decor just doesn't do anything for us. The decor makes it look like a really nice Super 8 or a typical Hampton INN. That's not for us. If we want modern, we'll stay off property. We are PORS people, and love the ambience of that resort. Anyway's sorry your cruise is over, sounds like it was a wonderful time. But I can't imagine a better way to get over a wonderful cruise than to go to WDW.

Thanks for reading! I've never been a fan of the Contemporary. The only thing I ever liked about it was riding through it on the monorail on the way to MK! But that's the great thing about WDW.. There is something for EVERY taste! So if you don't like the contemporary theming, there's victorian theme... south Pacific theme.... Bourbon Street theme.... etc.... Something for everyone!! :)

I'm very much a lurker on this site despite reading it in my spare time constantly but had to pop in (and reset my password since it's so long since I last logged in!) to say that this cruise looked amazing! I've always thought that I'd never handle a cruise because of the rocking (I have not done well on small boats let's put it that way) and also living in England means I don't get out there as often as I'd like. The details look incredible - especially Animators Palette :)
That's all I wanted to say really, also I am the one who recently followed you on instagram, courtesy of stalking #wdwmagicgirls ;)

Ahhhh, yes, new Instagram buddies! :)

I didn't think I would do well on the cruise but the ship is so large, you don't really notice it moving like you would on smaller boats. I could feel it at first and it took me a bit to get my "sea legs" but the water wasn't too rough so we had a pretty smooth sailing from what I gather. A little choppy the first night not nothing a little Dramamine couldn't handle :)

Sorry you had to leave the ship but at least your are back to the parks. I agree that the Contemp and Bay Lake are plain compared to the other resorts, at least it's close to Magic Kingdom. Loving the pictures.

Darolyn, I think your pictures get better everytime you post! They're awesome! :)

Thanks Tammy! :D I think it's a combo of A - me getting better with my camera and actually kind of knowing what I'm doing by this point in the trip and B - learing to edit them better! haha. You actually inspired me to rent a wide angle lens for our next trip. I love your photos of CC you posted with your wide angle so I'm going to give it a go! :)

Thank you!! :) Leaving the ship was depressing. When we boarded I didn't think I would be that sad but the waterworks, they were a-flowin'! lol We booked BLt basically because of its location to MK. We knew we would be doing MK for 2 days, Epcot for 1 and DHS for one. Plus MNSSHP so it made sense for us to be close to MK so we could walk back and put our costumes on and walk back to the park! We rented points so it was MUCH cheaper than booking with Disney direct.

After that, we had a date at the Character Spot. Pluto had his dancing shoes on apparently. And don’t mind me looking like I’m pregnant here! 4 days worth of unlimited food on a cruise will do that to a girl! Haha.

Ashley's eyes were closed so I won't bother posting her pic with Minnie. Not sure where our pics with Donald and Mickey are!!
I think we went and rode SSE here? Or maybe headed to World Showcase? Not sure…. We’ll go with SSE though! After that we headed over towards World Showcase to wander and make our way over to Italy where we had a dinner ADR. Even though I know Via Napoli gets some slack on here, we love it! Mostly for the pizza but partly for the drinks and the hot waiters. I don’t even remember what our waiter looked like this time, but I know we had a guy and he must not have been super hot if I don’t remember him.
I do remember I got a Bellini and we shared a pepperoni pizza. SO. GOOD. I’m starving right now and writing about this is just making my tummy grumble that much more. I think we finished the whole thing!!

After dinner, we headed back towards Future World towards Mexico. Had to stop in Germany to get a little treat. You figure after a semi late lunch and then dinner I would be full, but no! I'm a caramel lover, but not hard caramel, like Werther's original candy. I like soft caramel like Caramello bars and Cow Tails. So I got this beauty. Chocolate covered caramel with sea salt. It was divine!

Survey marker!

It was a beautiful September evening and we were enjoying it to the fullest extent. There were some clouds, but it was still very nice outside.

Next on our list: Test Track!! Ashley and I both designed the car. We alternated picking things for it (One of us picked the color, the other the wheels, etc...) The final product...

After TT, we headed back towards World Showcase and decided to walk around to Canada since we had some time to kill before heading back to BLT.

Hey there buddy! The more that I read these dang 4 night Bahamas Cruise reports the more I just want to go for the 7 night Caribbean!! I can seriously just feel how painfully quick they go by, it makes me sad about going on my own like I can feel it ending already!! Psycho! I absolutely love you and your sister because I've got the absolute same thing going on with mine, nothing beats it. And your little Benny's story would totally go down with us too and I'd call her a weirdo about it. All good stuff.

Now BLT…I've never seen a studio room really besides your pic; we've only stayed in the 2BR villas there. That's our DVC home resort. My love for it is truly all about the walk to MK and I LoVE the Bay Lake view. I will forever love the buzz and magic energy that you feel over in the Contemporary and the rooms in the Contemporary are way better than the studios in BLT. My brother stayed in one a few trips ago that I got to see. Note that I've won on our last 3 trips booked on choosing other resorts!

And Dude, when/what/where is your April trip…what the what? Out of FL I hope during my trip dates so that we can cross paths somehow. Or we'll just meet at a country show up here soon. :joyfull:
