My child turns 3 halfway through our trip, does he need a ticket?

If my son is turning 3 years old on day 5 of our 8 day trip to WDW, should we get him a ticket for the second half of the trip? For the whole trip? Are there any benefits for him for having an actual ticket vs. not having one? I'd kinda like to save the cash if I don't have to, but if it allowed him to do more I'd be up for it.

My friend's daughter turned 3 mid-trip a few years ago. When she was booking the CM told her she did not need a park ticket.
